the lake. asha. a bikini. one reckless thought. all of these elements brewed together made a potion that was positively bubbling with danger and the potential to explode with nothing but failure. wounded pride would drive asha to the most extreme and her sense or logic would still fail to set in. reckless was one of her attributes that had worked her into various situations that she had narrowly been able to escape from. going to the lake and trying to teach herself how to swim was by far the foolish thing that asha had ever decided to do. calling her fear hydrophobia was only speaking in light terms. asha's fear made it so that even standing under the shower for than five minutes was a challenge that she could never meet. fearless asha would thrash her way out of the shower and collapse onto shea's bead in a mess of tears if she was under the water any longer. what could could possibly be the drive behind her impulsive choice to learn how to swim? ashton raleigh, that was the answer to it all. she had been sinking to the bottom of the lake less than a week ago and asha had seen her in her weakest and most vulnerable. asha would feel more triumphant and assured when she could cut her arms and kick her legs to glide through the water effortlessly. asha would mentally amount herself to ashton and give him a big "fuck you" when she began to paddle through the water.
the stares aimed her direction as she slowly made her progression towards the lake made asha bristle. a casual finger was flipped in the direction of thunder girl who gave her a dirty glare and then some words were exchanged with a small huddle of boys who looked her over hungrily. unintentionally attention was brought to asha when she never had any intent to slip into the spotlight. by now it was natural for her to cause a scene, something that wasn't particularly great but a thing she couldn't help. nearing closer to the lake asha's mind actually began to doubt the rash decision that had been formed while she had been fuming. she was notorious for always following through with everything that she said, the reason while all of the outrageous dares and challenges were thrown her way. the loophole in this situation was that this was something that she had only sworn to herself, the words hadn't been spoken and no one had heard them. her conscious would fully be aware of her cowardice and asha felt that was almost as worse as having everyone else scoff at her. with grim determination she continued onwards to the lake. the thought that she would actually inform herself how to swim was something that now came off as bogus to her. asha wasn't even sure if she would be able to row her arms and kick her legs simultaneously. hell, when she stepped into the water it would be an amazing feat. baby steps would have to be taken.
a lump formed in her throat as she stood on the very edge of the lake's shore. even being this close to the gentle water was enough to make it feel like she was frozen to her spot. she moved mechanically as she coaxed herself to step forward until she lingered only a few feet away from the water. she grunted at her splint, it was a bother and hideous on her arm. when the nurse in the medical wing had told her that her broken hand would require the splint she had immediately protested. ashton was the only reason that she was still wearing it, she had promised him that she would properly allow her hand to heal. that meant wearing a fucking splint that bulged out naturally and caused her nothing but irritation. her hands were stiff as she pulled her shirt over her head and unbuttoned her shorts then kicked them off carelessly. stepping away from the heap of her clothes and towards the water was terrifying, the lump that rested in her throat only growing in size. she had wandered off to one of the more secluded edges of the lake, prying eyes didn't need to peek in on asha as she made an attempt to swim. behind her eyes the recollection of the summer at her grandparent's lake house made her freeze all over again. no one was around to shove her head down and keep her in the water but that didn't keep sheer fear from setting in.
a strangled cry came from asha as she shoved the memory far down into her mind, it couldn't haunt her at this moment. she was fucking busy trying to swim. she held her breath and began towards the lake with a slow jog. a shrill yelp came from asha when she plunged deep enough to have the water rest at her knees. she hadn't been anticipating the cool temperature of the lake water, it was april so she had figured the water would be moderately warm. tears began to flood her eyes as she wrapped her arms around herself and urged her legs to carry on. by the time the water was lapping against her waist asha's face was red and muted sobs were coming from her. why was she torturing herself? her mind wasn't with her, all of her thoughts had been washed out by the icy sting of the water that caused goosebumps on her arms. how far had she managed to walk out? her question was answered when suddenly the ground underneath her feet seemed to slop and her footing was lost. another shrill scream came from her and her arms were thrown into the air in a frantic fright. her head went bobbing underneath the surface where air couldn't reach her lungs. que drowning, again.

Ashton frowned at the pile of discarded shirts on his bed, upset that it was taking him so long to get dressed. This must be what women go through, he thought, and the random musing made him chuckle slightly. He wasn't indecisive on what to wear because he wanted to look hot, however, but because he wanted to cover up the twin shining red spots on his shoulders. He looked like he'd walked out onto a beach and fallen asleep, but somehow managed to only get these two spots burned. Not only was his skin red, but it was somewhat hot to the touch and it was tender as well. But hey, at least it was a lot better than what he'd started out with. Ashton wasn't exactly the type to go running off to the medical wing for the slightest of injuries, yet when it felt like your shoulders were going to be ripped from your body then you sort of had to make compromises. Lots of compromises. The nurse who'd treated him had asked for the names of the Fire students when she'd pulled him into the back room to question him without any other prying ears around. Specifically Asha's. It had been rather awkward for the poor Earth student when the woman had started grilling him intensely on his relationship with the bitchy Fire elemental. "Is she manipulating you in some way, hon?" It had taken him aback. He'd forgotten for a moment that not everyone would realise he and Asha had nothing against one another now, especially since he'd been sent to the medical wing for injuries inflicted by her in the past. And so Ashton had been forced to sit there as she healed the wounds explaining that no, Asha wasn't making threats, and that actually... she had helped him out. That was one of the most awkward conversations he'd ever had with a member of the Academy's faculty.
Her reaction had been predictable enough. She'd laughed and insisted that, "You can tell me the truth." It had taken a moment to convince her. More than a moment, actually. He hadn't said anything to Asha about it afterwards because he'd figured that it was just going to remind the Fire girl that not only were they different, they were supposed to be enemies. This war made things even more intense than usual. They had to be careful about who said and did what around the other, because they had ears and eyes everywhere in the Academy. It was frightening to consider that they might both be outcasted or ostracised by their peers just because they weren't at one another's throats like they were 'supposed' to be. And how loyal was Asha to her Fire kin? Would she turn on the Earth boy and attack him if she was ordered to by the leaders? Would she turn on him even if she wasn't? He really wasn't sure how or where to take this whole awkward understanding thing they had going on. They'd spoke about intimate things like virginity and the loss of it, and yet he didn't even know the simplest things about her. He didn't even know her middle name. He only knew her surname because the Woods twins were infamous around the Academy, and because she'd targeted him before. And what about Ashton? If he was asked to by his element, could he turn on her? The thought strangely made his stomach twist. He'd never been the type to approve of betraying your friends. That was why he'd agreed with the female Earth leader when she'd said that Earth should indefinitely side with Nell, even though it meant painting a target on their backs.
Sighing, he finally found a shirt that managed to cover the burns whilst not making him look too much like an idiot. He couldn't really go for the high-collared shirts, though, so some of the marks were still visible. At least they're mostly gone? It was going to have to do, because the stuffiness of the dormitories right now was really started to grate on Ashton. It was normally fragrant and free of any sort of discomfort, but the fact that everyone basically camped out here in fear of letting themselves be vulnerable meant that there was a lot more people to deal with than usual. Ashton was a people person, but even he had his limits. The crisp freshness of the air on the grounds made him feel much better, drinking in the scents of spring. He was perfectly cheery and content, until--
Until a replay of the last time he'd been near this lake seemed to unfold before his eyes, and without even a conscious thought he was heading down toward the lake. Fuck a cautious approach, Ashton was practically jogging--he didn't pause as he hit the water, waves crashing against his knees and nearly unbalancing him. None of this mattered to Ashton, for his thoughts had one straight theme--ohmygod, not again! Not this again! He was a lot more hasty in pulling her from the water this time, so concerned about how long it may or may not have taken him to descend the sweeping lawn toward the lake. She felt limper in his grasp than she had the first time, and that alarmed him above all else. He was barely thinking by the time he'd awkwardly sloshed through the water and back onto the bank. He didn't think about the fact that they were leagues out of one another's reach, with Asha coming out clearly on top. He didn't think of how awkward or uncomfortable this might be (especially after the virginity talk). He just knelt beside Asha and pressed his lips to hers. Mouth to mouth wasn't something Ashton was quite sure he knew how to do, but he'd seen it done on television and he'd taken a guess. So then why did this feel more like a kiss...?

resistance wasn't something that she felt like she could pull through with. the last experience she had with drowning sluggishly entered her mind. how long had she been able to flail her arms around before the water had ultimately beat her? time hadn't been a conception she worried about when she was submerged under the surface of the water. asha could only recall how she valiantly thought that she would have been able to fight against the water. her hopes had been diminished to nothing when her arms had quickly tired because of the effort she had put forth in trying to make her arms seen over the surface of the water. no it felt like putting out any energy would only be a waste. being in such a secluded area of the lake guaranteed that no one would catch sight of her figuring plunging into the water. her head was under the surface while her arms rested still on her sides. asha almost looked peaceful as she exhaled her last breathe of air, in response earning lungs full of the water seething with frost.
no fight was to be found left in asha woods. her body was sacrificing itself to the one thing that she had the greatest fear for. asha would have figured that her death would have been caused by her brother in an act of retaliation that had been taken too far or something that had to deal with violence. drowning would be her cause of death, she wasn't going to argue with the destiny that fate that rested upon her. any other situation would have earned more of an earnest attempt out of her. hydrophobia was her biggest fear for a good reason. fear didn't even exist to her right now, it felt like nothing was real to asha. her eyes had closed and air wasn't circulating through out her body, she had quickly come to terms that water would beat her and claim her as its own. nothing was functioning anymore, everything was at peace and it all seemed content. would death be this peaceful? she could only hope. though if hell was raging a party she would be okay with that too.
some was lifting her up? was their some sort of personal service that delivered your body right towards heaven or hell? if asha had been coherent enough she would have been snorting at the thought of an angel or demon lifting your body and personally delivering your soul to the desired destination. her lungs were suddenly screaming air, feeling like they had been deprived of oxygen for too much time to comprehend. her body started to tremor with violent shivers that couldn't be contained. something close to a sputtering cough came from her when she felt that her body was laid out on firm ground. hell, she hadn't died. her mind had instantly overreacted, the worst thing that could have personally happened. once again she had evaded death, the same death twice. she was starting to feel like a goddess or something of the sorts. goddess asha. her slender body would be able to pull of the toga things that the greek gods wore, right? damn, she would be looking pretty fresh.
her mind was slowly shifting back into its normal state, still sluggish from the water that had numbed everything. water wasn't spewing out of her mouth and nothing felt like it was trapped in her chest. the lake couldn't have claimed her for too long, her body had just instantly surrendered. her body was really a damn traitor. now aware that she hadn't passed on to a "better place" asha wanted to have her eyes pried open. why the hell couldn't she open her eyes? her frustrations were subdued when the soft press of lips were felt against her. what? holy fuck, someone was attempting to do cpr on her. a pretty pathetic attempt too. they hadn't pressed on her chest or opened her mouth to have more access to her airway passages. this felt more like...a kiss. asha's mind felt content with that, her lips easily meshing with the mystery lips and honestly enjoying the action they were receiving. finally allowance happened and her eyes fluttered opened, to the sight of ashton pulled over her. hell, she was kissing ashton?! letting reality set in asha decided the thought wasn't that alarming. absently she reached her arms out to wrap around his neck and pull him closer to her. she had just nearly drowned and now she was macking on ashton raleigh.
her encounters with him couldn't get anymore interesting.

He didn't expect there to be any sort of response. Ashton had figured that she was drowning and thus she must be unconscious with her lungs filled with water and possibly dying. He was so surprised at the response, therefore, that he barely had much of a reaction himself. She was kissing him and he was kissing back--she was a remarkably good kisser, and for a moment it seemed like he had completely lost all of his sensible and rational thought process. He wasn't the type that would take advantage of someone's drowning just for an excuse to kiss them, and normally he would have jerked back red in the face and stammering out apologies and excuses right now about how he'd thought she needed help and he was sorry and how they must never speak of this again. Yet even as Asha reached her arms up and wrapped them around his neck to pull him closer, he really didn't have much of a reaction at all other than to kiss back for a long moment. It had been such a long time since he'd last kissed a girl--about six months or so--and they weren't even in a relationship and this was wrong, but fuck it all. He was kissing back and he was liking it and for some reason it didn't even matter that this was Asha Woods.
Then reality kicked in as he needed air and he pulled away slightly. Ashton blinked as he realised what he'd been doing--what they'd both been doing--and shifted awkwardly. "U-Um, sorry about that." He figured that Asha hadn't mean to kiss him, and that even if she had it had been purely out of impulse and she was likely disgusted and freaked out at the moment. He was neither disgusted nor freaked out, but they were very different people and he wouldn't blame her if she was. He was Ashton Raleigh, soft and gentle Earth leader. Asha Woods was his exact opposite in every sense of the word. Feeling as if he owed her some sort of explanation for why he'd kissed her, he said, "You weren't moving much, so I thought--" He cut himself off, falling silent. So he'd thought what? That he'd kiss her? Well, no, he'd been intending to do mouth-to-mouth, but he wasn't that great at CPR. He'd thought about his lack of skill in said field the first time he'd saved her, but if he could recall he hadn't brought that to Asha's attention. Or maybe he had. Again, he didn't have the greatest memory of the event. He just remembered panicking and her burns and her snapping at him about the medical wing. Nothing much about CPR except his own thoughts. "Anyway, it's... it's good to see that you're not, uh, dead... or anything." Because believe it or not he cared quite a bit about the fact that she was alive and the fact that he was not responsible for allowing her to drown. He might have felt proud of himself for saving her life for the second time that month if he wasn't busy being so awkward over the kissing thing. Had she been kissing back, just there? It felt like she had but he was probably imagining things. Her arms around my neck, then? What was that? Even still, he passed it off as instinctive. Silly Ashton.
Now that the initial embarrassment was starting to fade, Ashton found himself wondering what the fuck had happened this time to have her drowning in the lake. He hadn't seen her sloshing into the depths all by herself--all he had witnessed were the end results of flailing and sinking and nearly dying. Both because he was honestly concerned and because he wanted to get away from the topic of their awkward make out session, Ashton decided that he would inquire about all of this. "Geez, Asha, have you developed a habit of drowning regularly?" He sounded both exasperated and mildly sympathetic, plus a little tired from the fact that he'd ran here, saved him from drowning, and then promptly make out with her on the lakeshore. God, it sounded ridiculous even in his own mind. "What happened? Was it--was it your brother again?" He forced the last sentence out with some difficulty, infuriated with the mere idea of Ace Woods. He'd tried to drown her twice already, and Ashton wouldn't put it past him to try again. The Earth leader found himself feeling oddly protective over Asha. It was a strange feeling, and it was one which he hadn't expected to feel. "Are you feeling okay? No other injuries or anything?" Then, quickly and sounding almost amused, he added, "Don't worry. No medical wing. I know you hate it there." He noticed the--now soaking--splint on her hand and pressed his lips together with worry. "How's your hand?"

ashton raleigh had his lips pressed to hers into what asha had figured was a kiss. why in the hell had his mind gotten the notion that he should kiss her? damned if asha knew, she wasn't a mind reader or any funny shit like that. it was common knowledge that when someone had their lips up against the lips of someone else that was what would be called a kiss. so, they were kissing? it seemed to have fled her mind that only moments ago that she had been drowning in the lake and for the second time ashton had come to save her. her mind was trained on the fact that they were kissing and she was drawing great pleasure from it. his lips meshed perfectly with hers and asha had no thought that she should pull away because the thought of kissing ashton raleigh was revolting. this was something that should have never been allowed yet asha could bring herself to push him away, especially since she had been the one to pull him closer to her. in one sense this was all seriously fucked up to asha but in another she was tired of giving a shit about the opinions of others around her. this is what is must feel like to not care, she decided. it would be even more pleasant if she would continue to feel ashton's lips against her. hell, what was going with her?
was it some sort of reality check when ashton seemed to need to feed air to his lungs? having him pull away graced asha's lips with a frown, that was a kiss that she had been truly enjoying. his face was pulled away from his and now she was craving to have his lips pressed back against his. hell, holy hell, black baby jesus. this was not the way that she was supposed to be feeling about ashton. too bad right now she was facing her feelings with a big "fuck you." "you can't hold your breath for very long then, wuss," asha tiredly murmured, letting her eyes flutter shut as exhaustion set onto her. her eyes didn't have to be open for her to imagine ashton shifting uncomfortably because the kiss had left him feeling awkwardly horrible. his assumption probably came down to something that she hadn't mean to kiss him. asha never did anything unintentionally. she was recklessly but all of her actions had intentions. "if i enjoyed the kiss and you enjoyed it then i don't see why you need to be sorry," asha firmly commanded, arching back absently to sort out the kinks that had formed. he was grasping at words desperately and it seemed that he wasn't sure about what he could say. asha would have sputtered out the first thing that had came to her mind. oh wait, that had been exactly what she had done. flipping her eyelids up and with murky eyes she rolled her head over to gaze up at the finicky ashton placed over her. he strung together a thought about how it was a positive that she wasn't dead or anything of the sorts. ashton's words worked a snort out of her and she gave a lazy nod of her head. "you played savior again and fished me out of the lake. i'm not choking up water or anything. maybe you should become a life guard," she listlessly said, her thoughts flowing out of her mouth like the water that should have been taking refuge in her lungs.
asha had honestly kissed ashton raleigh, her lips had been pressed against his and she had been willing to deepen the kiss. ashton seemed to be flailing in awkwardness beside her, unable to come to terms with the simple fact that he had kissed the fire bitch known as asha woods. asha was completely nonchalant with it all, her attitude had shifted and to her satisfaction it was working wonders with her. would she be able to get ashton to admit that he had kissed her? he eagerly jumped to another topic of conversation, one that seemed to soothe how uncomfortable her felt. that blew her question out of the water for a moment then. "it's a weekly thing now. i never know when it will happen though. sometimes i just get the urge to drown," asha bitterly replied, the joke not hitting where ashton had landed. he tried at another question that asha felt like she could answer with more sincerity and less of her usual hostility. looking over at him her lips tugged down into a deep frown. "get prepared to laugh your ass off: i was trying to swim." cringing at how foolish her thought was a hand dragged down her body to show ashton that she was donning a swimsuit. girls didn't go around flaunting off swimsuits just for the hell of it. at least asha didn't. more questions were coming from him, asha was being to think that he was more than concerned for her. hell, no one expect for mother ever paid this much attention to her. not even shea, she usually brushed off everything since she knew how tough asha was. "my hate for the medicial wing would drive out all need to go there. i'm fine though, mother," asha assured him, sticking her tongue out at him to empathize that even though she had nearly drowned she was feeling all right. seeing him filled with concern made asha frown. he didn't need to get this worked up over her. "it's in a splint, so it's fine."

It wasn't really all that surprising that the first thing Asha did when he pulled away from her was insult his masculinity, however jokingly she had meant it to be said. He wasn't really all that offended this time, and he merely arched a brow before he replied, "Fishing you out of a lake can drive the breath out of a guy." He really had already been worn down a little bit due to the fact that he'd sloshed into the water at an alarming speed, dragged Asha back to the bank, and then pressed his lips against hers all before he really considered what it was he was about to do. Ashton wasn't usually a very impulsive and wild person but when it came to someone he was close to--woah, hold that thought. Close to? No, he was getting ahead of himself here. Ashton Raleigh and Asha Woods were not close. They were barely even at the level of acquainted yet. At least, that was the way he figured she seen it. He was probably just some brat that had fished her out of a lake (twice, now) and that she'd repaid the first time by rescuing from a bunch of brats in her element. The next thing she said, therefore, shocked him. It didn't register in his expression much due to the fact the entire situation was alarming, but it really did surprise him that she said she enjoyed the kiss. Had he enjoyed it? Though it made him uncomfortable to realise it, he really had liked the feel of her lips on his. She was a good kisser, and even though he was relatively naive on a lot of subjects Ashton knew enough about kissing to know that it had been a pleasant experience to speak of. So rather than acting disgusted he replied, "I guess you're right." It was admitting to the fact that he'd liked it but he supposed Asha could guess that anyway by the fact that he hadn't jerked his head back immediately and started stammering and making faces and all that. That would have been childish anyway, he concluded. Naive and free-spirited, that was Ashton. Not a child.
A life guard. The thought made the boy chuckle, and at least the awkwardness was something that could be gotten over quickly considering the mere idea of it amused him. "Fifty percent survival rate," he said, lips twitching into a smile. He really would be a terrible life guard. "Now when I think of saviours I think of Jesus, Asha," he snorted, picturing himself in the same disastrous getup they'd been imagining her in the last time that they'd spoken. "I do think I would look just as terrible with facial hair and dirty sandals." And a toga, or whatever it was they called those robes--he didn't know. He'd never been good at history and he'd never taken any sort of religious studies before. His parents were all about believing what you wished and Ashton really hadn't decided what those beliefs were. He was an Earth elemental, so he supposed he placed his faith in nature and whatever religion shared his views might be the closest to what he was. He never chose to slap labels on himself, however, and so if ever asked to explain his standings he just shrugged and told them it didn't matter. People argued over things like that and Ashton didn't like to argue. "I'm also a terrible fisherman," he joked, "and I doubt I'd enjoy kissing any of the things I pulled out of lakes." Or rivers. Or community pools. A mental image of some of the rather gross folk that swam in the pool a few blocks from his house came to mind, and that further solidified the idea that he would want no part in it.
Her 'joke' made him wince a little, sensing the bitterness and feeling somewhat bad for asking. He didn't want to upset her or anything. It had been more of a hypothetical question he'd proposed in the heat of the moment, not really expecting her to have answered at all. But they were moving on from that before he could formulate much of a proper response, and he shook his head at her next words. "I'm not laughing," he said, and he truly didn't find it funny that Asha had nearly drowned in her attempts to swim. His only question? Why? He didn't understand why swimming mattered so much to a Fire elemental. He could understand if you were water and you needed to learn, but Fire elementals were a lot different. "I just don't understand--why would it matter to you? As long as you stay away from water you shouldn't have to worry, right?" Unless her life's dream was to become a pirate or something, and then they might have a little bit of trouble. Ashton nodded when Asha spat out a few choice words about the medical wing, however, remembering her intense hatred for the place the last few times they'd discussed it. He didn't know whether it was pride or phobia or something else, he just knew that she hated it and didn't want to go there and for Ashton that was more than enough. "I'm not arguing with that, don't worry." He didn't want her to think he was pushing the subject or anything. He'd given up on even the suggestion of heading there by now. Her hand was alright, at least, to which he said, "Well, good." He'd hate to see her suffering.

for the second time in only the span of a week asha woods' life had been nearly claimed by the lake. she had almost drowned, the lake filling her body with an invasive liquid that clearly did not belong there. it wasn't registering to asha she had had just been swept out of the lake moments ago, the reality of the situation refusing to settle and crush her with its massive weight. while her mind had an established resilence her body bore clear signs of her near experiences with death. breathing was no hassle, the water that had spilled into her lungs had been swallowed. sputtering out lake water like a faulty gutter wouldn't be an issue this time. however her legs and arms felt heavy with wear, flailing her limbs under the hefty weight of the water. a tired disposition and weary muscles were the only signs that asha had only just clawed her way under the lake only to be rescued once more. ashton was the one showing obvious signs that he had played the role of hero. his clothes were drenched and his breathing must have been labored as he pulled her out of the water only to have to carry to her to the shore. sparing her glance his way asha's glanced softened as she continued to peer over at him. "i would have just thanked you if you that hadn't sounded like a smartass remark," asha replied, allowing her eyes to tiredly flutter shut. asha had completely brushed over the subject of their cpr attempt turned in a brief makeout session, it had registered to her and she had no protests against it. ashton still seemed perplexed, like it was impossible to comprehend that she had pulled him closer to her and decidedly deepened the kiss. was having asha woods kiss him something that seemed so inscrutable? she liked him well enough, that meant she wasn't going to be a mega-bitch towards him all the time. "you can erase that kiss from your memory if you want? i can understand how having resident bitch at the academy could scar you," asha loftily said, her mouth had transformed into a sneer. ashton wouldn't have to bother with her presence and their kiss if it was that disconcerting to him. why the hell was irking to such a high degree?
usually having some bristle her would mean that she would stay huffy and catty until the cause of her irritation vanished. asha would barrage them relentlessly with attacks, half of the incidents ended up in a worse place then was necessary. ashton had easily riled her up with nothing more than a silence after a kiss that seemingly meant nothing. her slight rage directed towards him shouldn't have dissolved as quickly as it had. asha didn't feel her claws, like they had retracted because ashton wasn't someone that deserved to be assailed his joking caught her attention immediately, anger wasn't her main and top priority any longer. "fifty percent survival rate is better than the survival rate that would be promised if i was a lifeguard," asha countered, the nasty sneer vanishing to have her lips curl into a warm smile that looked foreign on her face. all of the kidding with ashton was only a scene that asha could be found in with either shea or aspen, no one else ever spotted her in this natural stare before. how in the hell was ashton causing her to react like this? her temper didn't even hit him in the way that it was unleashed on everyone else. "it'd be better if we didn't think about jesus asha. every time it is spoken of i get a scary mental image of my face with a hairy raccoon that is supposed to serve as a beard," she informed him, turning onto her side as she melted into a fit of airy laughter. imagining ashton take over her spot as jesus only fueled her laughter further, leaving asha to gasp for air once her laughter spell had passed. "i'll get a sharpie and draw a beard onto your face, then we can compare your beard to my imaginary one." looking over to ashton once more quiet asha as he did nothing but stare at him. listening to him speak ashton bit on her lip and another image dropped into her mind. he had on a funny hat and the hook of his rod was embedded in his pants. "okay, fisherman raleigh. kissing fish doesn't sound like something anyone would enjoy. i would suggest sticking to locking lips with the fiery maidens you pull out of the lakes," asha said, winking at him suggestively.
her harsh demeanor was summoned once again when her choice to try and self instruct herself on the art of swimming was dragged into their conversation. asha's face twisted darkly with the scowl that slipped on her face and the darkening of her eyes. her hydrophobia paired with the more than reckless decision that she had followed through with were going to be a lethal subject to dive into. hopefully ashton was prepared for the full wrath of asha's temper. "really? anyone else who was in on my stifling fear towards water would be rolling on the ground with later. they would find it comical that asha woods was scared of something as silly as water," she spat out, her eyes searing as she glued her gaze to him. ashton had pressed her further on the choice that she had made to bring herself out to the lake. all of the questions would only serve as ammunition for all of the shots that she were aiming towards him. something close to a raw and feral growl came from her, all of her rage clawing at her insides, begging to be released even though the reasoning was unjustified. asha's gaze was torn from ashton, her eyes growing tired from peering at him endlessly, managing to never once blink to break the intensity. her head dropped and a clear view of the lake and the vast spread of the water flooded her gaze. anger was pushed aside immediately, no room left as fear and panic took over. reality finding the worse possible place to decide to invade and play its part. "holy shit...we're so close to the water..." asha stammered out, taking pauses between every few words because her breath had been taken from her. she bolted out of her casual sprawl on the shore and quickly changed her position to a crouch. there was no explanation as she grabbed onto ashton's arm and pulled him towards her roughly, situating herself so that she bury her face into the soaking material of his shirt. slight tremors came from her as she willed herself not to cry. when the hell had an emotional breakdown decided to barge in? now, apparently.

Ashton grinned a bit and let out a laugh when Asha accused him of being a smartass. "Guilty as charged," he admitted, nodding a little. Unlike most people, Ash wasn't being smart in an attempt to piss her off--it was just in his nature to joke around a little no matter who he was sitting with, even if they happened to be a bitchy and temperamental Fire student like Asha Woods. His sense of humour likely came from his grandmother and the fact that she'd been a Water elemental, the first trace of elemental power in her line for several generations. When his father was born without a gift, she'd sworn that it was going to die out completely. But Ashton had surprised the whole family. She constantly remarked on the fact that he was Earth and not Water as she, but Ashton knew this was probably because he was humorous, but not as much of a bubbly trickster as the Water students. Ashton was shocked when Asha snapped at him, not having expected the sudden change in attitude. She sounded sour and regretful--what did she mean, having the resident bitch kiss him? "Um, Asha, I was the one who--" He broke off, cheeks flushing with colour as he realised what he was about to admit, ducking his head slightly. "I mean, I didn't mean it like that, but--" A frustrated noise left his lips as he cut his words off yet again. Why was it so difficult to talk to her like this, why was he getting so worked up? Why should he care if Asha thought he hadn't enjoyed it? It was better that way, even. If she went around thinking that he wasn't that into her that meant they might be able to keep this sudden semblance of awkwardness out of their relationship. But apparently, according to his very insistent thoughts, it didn't work that way. Ashton didn't want her to think badly of him and he'd be damned if she did. "What in the hell makes you think I didn't enjoy it?" he demanded out of sole frustration, shaking his head. "Because whatever it is, you're--you're wrong, okay?" There. He'd said his piece. And now he felt strangely nervous about it.
Her rapid attitude switch between pissed off and cheerful made him dizzy, made his head swim. He hadn't been expecting Asha to react positively to anything he said after he had upset her--he'd seen how she got with people before, he'd heard rumours about her relentless temper and the fact that she let up for no man (or woman). So what made him any different? It was throwing him off quite a bit, and then she was talking and he had to drag himself out of the confusion enough to formulate a response. It wasn't that Ashton didn't like this sudden attitude switch, it had just caught him by surprise and he wasn't really sure what to do except for play along with it and hope things turned out alright. "And now I have an image of a raccoon clawing your face," he remarked, screwing up his expression as he realised how odd this mental image was. He decided that it was remarkably unpleasant to think of, so he winked at Asha and said, "No more Jesus Asha, then." He stuck out his tongue when she called him a fisherman, juvenile as his amusement was, he was enjoying himself. He actually liked her company more than he liked the company of a lot of the Earth students, and this was perhaps the most alarming realisation he could come to. The Earth kids were his family, and the fact that he was their leader further backed this up. But if he were to choose between Asha and the nearest Earth student... I'd choose her, he realised, gut twisting in alarm. Holy crap. He didn't understand what that meant for the two of them. Did he really enjoy her company that much? Yes, his thoughts interrupted almost snidely. "Fiesty fire maidens are the only ones for me," he laughed, but his thoughts were somewhere else.
Yet just as quickly as her anger had vanished, it was back--lethal, feral, terrifying in every sense of the word. Ashton flinched back as she actually fucking growled at him, a sound which he was not used to hearing from her lips. It was almost animalistic and the way she pinned him with her fierce gaze made him fear some sort of attack. It helped the Earth student to yet again realise that he was sitting with a Fire student and not one of his genteel friends--even though she made better company when she was in a good mood, he had to be absolutely careful around her. It was like walking on eggshells and getting a shard of one embedded into your foot. He'd made a mistake in bringing the water and her fear of it back up. "I don't think it's comical," Ashton said defensively, a tad offended that she'd even go there. Why would he think it funny that Asha was afraid of water, really? Sit a spider on him and he shuddered and hyperventilated and everything. It probably had to do with the fact that his grandmother had cryptically reminded him about spiders crawling into your mouth when you slept. He had stayed awake for days in fear of it and now he was wary of the eight-legged bastards whether he was sleeping or not. Before he could say anything else on the subject, however, Asha was suddenly scared and clinging to him. He stiffened in alarm at the contact, but then relaxed when he realised that she wasn't planning to maul him or anything. Instead he felt terrible for her. Unlike a lot of people who would shove her away and snap at her for being cruel toward them, Ashton was an incredibly open and sympathetic person. He couldn't really live with himself if he let her suffer through her fear. "Let's get away from the lake, then," he said quickly. "We can go up to the school, or the forest, or away from campus entirely. You won't even have to think about it."

He was owning up to the smartass comment that he had made, grinning over at her and nodding in agreement. The instantaneous acknowledgement of how was speaking like a smartass only made Asha laugh as a reaction. Ashton's humor was the personality that was brought out solely for the purpose that it would bring entertainment, like the fire students that Asha associated herself with. The way that he joked and jaunted was his sense of humor, Asha assumed, and not a source of cruelness that could be brought down on victims. Her own jokes were sometimes at the expense of others, the type of humor that Asha would never imagine pairing with Ashton. He was too good for the sorts of entertainment that Asha sought out from time to time. Too good for me. Hell! Ashton wasn't supposed to be thought of like that, like he was something that was unreachable. Taken aback by her thoughts, Asha scampered to give her mind an occupation. Replying to Ashton was perfect. "Someone is going to have to arrest you now. I don't do handcuffs either, too kinky," Asha replied, the handcuff bit being a remark of utter seriousness. The playful air that she was going to continue feed off vanished suddenly, Ashton's sputtering words slaying it. "You pressed your lips to mine, I know that. Typically that means you were trying to kiss me," Asha bitterly replied. The messages they had been conveying to each other had crossed each other wrong, something in their words hadn't been portrayed the way one of them had imagined. Asha was probably to blame, her temper had a history of ruining things. "If you didn't mean that then what the hell are you trying to say? Spit it out." Patience wasn't something that Asha could pride herself on. Ashton was grasping for the correct explanation while Asha was beginning fume because of the lack of understanding. What did this kiss mean? She only wanted to know if he had enjoyed it. Dammit, why couldn't he say that? Hearing Ashton speak out of frustration left her flustered for a moment, the questioned she aimed at her not helping her much. "I don't know what the hell you are thinking about the kiss. I'm...I'm thinking that you enjoyed it as much as I did." Her words came out with only a veil of hesitance, her inferring could be deadly.
Asha's moods fluxuated, her temper threatening to flare and grow into a rage at even the slightest of things. The things that set her off could be tiny and pointless, Ace being the one of the many tiny things that could start a fire within her. Ashton didn't appear to be a person that fed to her anger, not as drastically as everyone else around her did anyway. Even Shea could stir up her temper into a firebreathing dragon when her words were careless or something she had done wasn't accepable by Asha's terms. Rage was something that connected Asha and Shea together, to have them at each others throat was never something uncommon. One tiff between them had actually ended up with Asha's hands tightly grasped Shea's throat after the words she had spoken struck Asha hard. Ashton didn't temper with her rage, only irked her with some of the things that he said. What separated him with everyone else was that he never had intents to prod at her and watch her anger fuel. It was easy for her sudden temper flare to dissolve when she listened to Ashton joke, the reason of her anger suddenly seeming unimportant and slightly petty. "I don't believe that the raccoon be able to do any harm to my face," Asha surely said. "The ratty bandit would be burnt to a crisp before he even tried to rake his claws down my cheeks." Her face twisted with disgust, slightly revolted at the idea having a charred raccoon clinging to her body. He gave her a wink, Asha returning it with a devious smile of her own. She didn't need to try to and act flirty with him, it came naturally as soon as the conversation between the two of them started to flow. "Damn right, Asha Jesus has been laid to rest." She dramatically dipped her head, feigning despair while she pressed her hand to her heart. Her moods had transformed from baring her nonexistent fangs at Ashton to feeling like she was going to float away from the airy demeanor he had pushed onto her. This was the most unwound that Asha had felt in a while, no worries tied to her in an attempt to drag her down. Ashton served as some sort of release for her and all of the problems that she dragged around. Shea was her outlet, however this wasn't the sort of playfulness she felt when interacting with her best friend. "You've already this got fiery maiden," she sultrily said to him, punctuating the statement with a flirty wink.
The lake was her greatest fear. Having already tumbled into it twice would be enough reason for her to steer clear of it until her schooling at the Academy was through. The second near drowning disaster had been caused by her own reckless choices, Asha wouldn't hesitate to admit that. Stupid choices were something that she had been trained as a professional. Her whole childhood had been created off all of the impulsive choices and thoughtless decisions that she had created. Without the edge on her personality that her father had given her she would have turned out to be closely resemble her mother. Only an extreme case of hydrophobia would be the one thing to completely cause her temper to fizzle to dying sparks. "This isn't comical to you, at all? If I weren't the one cowering against you I'm pretty sure I would be laughing my ass off," Asha murmured into his shoulder, her fingers sinking deeply into his arm. She had started to shake, her whole body actually cowering against Ashton's. He didn't try and shove her away, though not many others would have tried to sympathize with the shuddering girl pressed into his side. Her mind was focused on the fact of being so closely placed to the lake. How had she even worked up the unexplained courage to bring herself to walk into the water until it had reached up to her neck? The simple thought of even dipping her foot into the lake managed to cause a violent shiver to wrack her body. "I just want to get up and run as far away from the lake as possible...I don't want to see it ever again. Not ever. No, just no..." Asha blubbered her out, her quivering lip causing her words to gush out funnily. Reality was dropping down onto her without any care of how much damage would actually be occurring. Whenever she would open her thoughts to the lake her mind would connect with the near drowning incident that shook her and left her cowering in the arms of Ashton Raleigh. The nails of her fingers were embedded into his arm, grasping on dearly like something was threatening to tear her away from him. "Don't leave me. If you leave me I will castrate you, I swear.." Her voice was shaky, all remnants of feisty and demanding Ashton had been buried by her pure terror. "My house...let's go there."

Ashton grinned, half-amused and half-sheepish when it came to the comment about handcuffs. He was still coming to terms with the fact that it was easy for him to interact with her in this way, joking as if they'd known one another for years. A fearful part of his brain still convinced him that this was an act and that Asha didn't really enjoy his company as much that she let on, that she was just going to be using him--albeit for just friendship--like every other girl had used him and dumped him in the past. His luck with relationships was incredibly rocky, which explained why he tended to get a little more awkward when he was trying to justify the feelings in his own head about kissing Asha. He really did enjoy it, but he was confused by such enjoyment. He didn't want to feel like your typical guy by going for the kiss just because Asha was hot--whilst he did enjoy that kind of thing, he preferred to have more to intimate interaction than aesthetics. Ash wasn't the type of guy to take advantage of a girl, so this situation alarmed him quite a lot. At first he'd thought Asha wouldn't give a damn, but now it seemed like she did and he was massively confused by this fact. Most of the time it was the girls who came on to him and convinced him that he was sweet and adorable and that they should get together. Ash was naive enough in that sense that he usually believed they were trying to get into a relationship because they liked him, rather than it being because there was any ulterior motives. He usually recognised the signs looking back, but he was too sweet to be mean. Asha wasn't the usual type of seductress, however. So where did that leave them...?
"I--fine," Ashton relented, deciding to just go to hell with it and admit that he hadn't thought it was as bad as Asha seemed to infer. "I enjoyed it. A lot." His cheeks flushed for a moment with the admission, but he wasn't blushing too furiously. He just got awkward whenever he was put on the spotlight like this. Asha knew he wasn't a virgin because he'd disclosed this to her, so the only reason he was so confused was because he didn't understand where this left them. Friends? But were they even friends to begin with? He didn't know. If they were, it was honestly the strangest friendship that Ashton had ever shared with anybody. Then he blinked, realising something in what she'd said. "That... does that mean you did enjoy it? You're saying you liked it?" Surprising even himself, he grinned a little. "You actually did." He stuck out his tongue almost playfully. He was almost... smug? "Just call me up any time you want me to fail at CPR, I'm your man." He was kidding around of course, jokingly flirting with her. The fact that he could joke about this was astounding. He wasn't all naive and prudish when it came to flirting, but he also wasn't the type that would hit on Asha or try to seduce her. He was only playing around for shits and giggles, really. Not that he didn't think she was hot, not that he didn't enjoy the kiss, but the fact that he was confused meant that he wasn't expecting anything to come of it at all.
Ashton was amused by how smug Asha had become on the subject of the raccoon. "You've sure got confidence," he remarked, a smile tugging at his lips. He liked how smug and self-confident she was, actually. There weren't a lot of Earth girls like that, it was... different. The Water elementals he knew tended to be very over the top and bubbly, but Asha's type were a different sort of interesting. She intrigued him. No, stop! he thought to himself, not wanting to bury himself too deep in these thoughts. Then it was Asha's turn to flirt. "You're all mine now, huh?" The boy grinned at her. He wasn't really all that bothered by the fact that she was clinging to him, save for the fact that her nails were likely going to cause indents and even bruises in his arm. Ouch, he thought as an agonizing wave of pain swept up the area. But he didn't say anything, for he felt she needed the comfort and company more than he needed a pain-free arm. Ashton was selfless, he really was. "I wouldn't joke at your expense," he frowned, seemingly unhappy with the mere idea of doing so. She might have been the type to enjoy the suffering of others, but Ashton was not the same way. He surprisingly didn't judge her too harshly because of that fact, just brushing it off to the fact that they were different people--this was something he rarely did for the cruel Fire elementals. She's different, he thought, determined to believe it. After all, would she have helped him escape from the wrath of her fellow Fire elementals if she wasn't? Ash didn't think so, and merely left it at that. "Then we'll leave," he promised immediately. The boy stood slowly so that she could stand with him for support, stopping her from falling into the water. Knowing that she'd immediately want to get as far away as possible, he started toward the school. "Your house?" It surprised him, but then he nodded. "Okay, sounds good. Let's go there."
