It had been one day since the announcement had been made in the mess hall. One day. The memory of all that had happened there was still running constantly through Elaine's mind, making her unable to focus on anything. Spending the night at Nell's had helped with her mood, but there was still that nagging thought that if she came across Nell in trouble, she'd have to act. And then she'd be labeled one of the earths. But what if something were happening to Alex and she came across it? Same story, only then she'd be expected to go after one of her best friends. All these thoughts were running around the girl's brain, but she should have been more worried about something happening to her.
Though it was cold, Elaine couldn't make herself stay in the crowded halls of the academy for more than thirty minutes at a time. People were squabbling, or whispering among themselves in voices loud enough for her to hear. The words made her angry, but she kept a straight face as best she could. People were pooling together to form tight-knit units, but she had made it clear she was on neither side of this war. She could not round on a group of fire and thunder students talking trash about Nell. Nor could she on earth and water students who looked at her and mumbled about her not supporting the girl they knew to be Elaine's friend.
So her feet carried her out to the academy grounds, where fewer people wandered and breezes carried off the sounds of their warmongering. She didn't go to the lake, sensing water students over there. She didn't want to take the time to go the the cliffs, or the woods. So the blind girl wandered in large circle in the grounds nearby the large academy building. She wasn't paying much attention to the things around her, merely snaking a breeze along the gournd in front of her feet to make sure she didn't trip and allowing her feet to wander where they would. But after awhile, she emotion got her to. Her expression turned from stolid to stone, and she found a tree to lean against. On the outside, the most that would connote her ire was the fact that her hands had balled into fits. But on the inside, Elaine felt herself close to exploding. Whether in rage or tears, she didn't know.

Conrad wasn't exactly a key player in this war of the elements. Even though it was his own fault it had started to begin with, he'd kind of just retreated back into the dormitories and left everyone else to their fighting since. He was lazy and selfish and that Nell girl just might die because of him, but Conrad Aldridge completely lacked the ability to care. He had only cared about his siblings, and they had been taken away from him--or rather, he from them. Nate was in juvenile hall and Conrad blamed himself in a way for not being there to stop him from getting caught. Hannah was on the run and again he felt the blame for not being able to help her evade the law. But Con didn't take blame and shame like most people did. Most would attack themselves and go into a depression. He did not do that.
Instead, Conrad detached himself from everyone and everything. He severed his own emotions. And with the vindictive personality of a Thunder student, he chose to take out his internal struggles on other people. It was not a conscious thing. He did not beat up the poor Water students and sneer to make himself feel good. No, there was just something within him that caused him to make bad decisions. Like agreeing to tell the entire school that Nell Shepherd was a murderer, for one. That had been a bad thing, an evil thing to do. Did he regret it? No. Did he realise that it made him feel good in a sadistic way to see everyone acting on something he had done? Also, no. But it did. There was a part of him, however small, that lusted for that feeling of importance.
Yet despite it all, he didn't want to be a part of the action. So when he was caught lazing around in the dormitories and ordered to go out and 'make himself useful', this irked Conrad. They had no right to tell him what to do! The idea of teenagers leading other teenagers had always bothered the guy. He had never listened to authorities and he wasn't about to start. He hadn't followed Cyn's request out of obedience, he'd done it simply because he'd decided to. Instead of shunning the order, however, he took upon it with a vengeance. They wanted him to cause trouble? Fine. He'd cause trouble. He'd show them that he could do whatever the fuck he liked.
He hadn't been targeting Elaine specifically. Conrad didn't know enough about his fellow students to realise that she was blind and even if he had known, it wouldn't have stopped him. She'd just been the one who was unlucky enough to cross his path first. Summoning the static charge from around him, he smirked as he watched a vivid flash of lightning strike down toward the Wind girl to deliver a hard shock if it hit.

The blind girl was so lost in thought that she wasn't even listening to anything anymore. The world was quite literally the feeling of the tree at her back and the ground at her feet and nothing else, her thoughts forming the rest of it. She was so entirely in her own world that she didn't hear Conrad approaching, she didn't have the good sense to be on her guard, as she usually did when a war was waged. So she was just sitting there, minding her own business, when the shock hit her.
First, she couldn't move. All she was aware of was intense pain, and a great drain in her energy from the unguarded attack. It hit her full on, and all she did at first was double over with a quiet grunt, her face screwed up with pain. Then, when she was finally able to take a breath, she sent a heavy wind in a circle around her until she'd located the purpetrator. ”Fucking ass!” She shouted at him, standing up straight and taking steps toward him. Wrath was written all over her features, but her tone hadn't been able to muster anything but indignation. She faced the boy, ”The hell was that for?”
She didn't wait for a reply, pulling masses of gales toward her right hand and throwing it at him before she'd finished the question. She didn't wait afterward, either, for him to strike back, her anger exploding too much for her to be smart with her energy. Elaine focused on the air beside the boy, creating a compression of air that would likely bowl him over with the force of release. She glowered in his direction, still walking toward him as she released the air pressure, throwing another gale at him at the same time.
It could not be said that Elaine was weak, nor that she lacked stamina, but this was a little much all at once. She felt physically tired, now, her breath starting to come more heavily, her legs feeling like weights as she strode forward. Already having been angry, she'd already used up some of her stores of adrenaline, and now she was running on stubbornness. But that wasn't going to help her. While she was attacking, she was very bad about defending herself. If she hadn't gotten him with those winds, she would likely not be able to do much more. But that wasn't going to stop her trying.
((No matter who you post for next, you have my express permission to have Conrad knock her off her feet with his next attack. ))

The first gust of winds managed to knock him backward slightly, Conrad digging his heels into the ground to stop from falling over in the process. He hadn't known that she was a Wind student, but now that he was well aware of this he was much more prepared and ready for the second blow. Feeling the winds before they reached him, Conrad managed to skirt out the way of the oncoming gales, the pressure whipping about his hair and clothing a little but not attacking him full on enough to take him down. Her anger seemed to be making her a little more reckless and unguarded than she probably would have been if he'd attacked her and she'd been ready for it, so Conrad was going to use this to his full advantage. She wasn't taking him down that easily.
The Thunder student sneering, not realising yet that Elaine was blind because he didn't care enough to look into the eyes of his opponent. He was heartless, truly, and that was all that mattered to him--the rush of adrenaline that he got as her anger became apparent. A smirk flowered on his expression, his emerald eyes glittering coldly in response. "Felt like it," he replied with a sneer, sounding amused. It was sick-minded to take such pleasure in the fact that she was suffering but really this was the only thing that got him close to being content. Seeing others in pain distracted him from the things he was supposed to be feeling and yet could not feel by default. There was an emptiness in the Thunder student, a hollowness, something was missing. He did not want to acknowledge the absence of his humanity and so he just tried to torture it out of others instead. He would go nowhere in life for he lacked the ambition and the drive that most people had.
For now, this would do. Stepping closer to the girl as she finished with her attack, Conrad gathered all of the static energy which he could muster and reached out to actually make contact with her skin, sending all of the harsh lightning and static through his arm like a current as he did so, channelling the energy to shock her hard enough that it might even blast her backward. It wouldn't be enough to cause brain damage, knock her unconscious, or anything like that... but it might also be enough to cause a lightning burn which he most certainly didn't plan on healing himself. "Sorry," he apologised, with no sincerity at all. "Had no idea that was gonna happen, honestly." He laughed coldly, no sympathy in his voice. How would his leaders like that? Hell, he didn't even know whose side she was on. He didn't care. All that mattered was that this made him feel better about himself, so he did it.

It was so strange, not being allowed back into his own dormitories. Hanging out around the Earth dorms all of the time reminded him painfully that he was even more of an outcast than usual in the event of this whole stupid war. He couldn't even go into the dungeons, let alone nip back into his room to get his laptop and all of his study material. He was left explaining with embarrassment to his professors that for once in his time at school, he hadn't done his homework, he hadn't brought his notes, and no, he couldn't email them his work when he did complete it because he didn't have his damned computer. Thankfully, the teachers themselves had heard about the wars that were going on and had assured him that he had an extra week to hurry and catch up to everyone else. His father promised to lend him the money for a new laptop (they'd spoken over the phone that morning) but for now he was just... stuck.
The professors couldn't exactly do anything about the wars that were going on. They were much stronger than the students of course, but they couldn't be everywhere at once and they most certainly couldn't get the kids to stop all on their own. The Academy was huge and there were tons of students, as opposed to only a few teachers for each grade. Not to mention the fact that the college students were much closer to matching the power of their professors and plenty of them (Joshua included) were involved in the war as well, whether they wanted to be or not. "I'm really sorry about this," he sighed as he handed in a redone assignment to one of his professors. "I'd get down there and hand in the original if I could but--"
"Don't worry about it," the man insisted. "You've been an excellent student up until this point, I don't doubt you had it done." Josh's lips twitched in a silent sort of thanks, and then he packed up his stuff and left the room. God, he hated wars. He wondered if Nell was alright and hoped that she wasn't in too much trouble. He spent as much time hanging around her as he could but classes still got in the way for the both of them considering the simple fact that they were both in different grades and had different schedules. At least he didn't have a job any more--that was a relief. He'd also told his parents he wouldn't be coming home as often for a while because of the trouble at school. Annabel was very upset and had phoned him crying, but Josh had still been forced to tell her that he wasn't going to be able to make it. It broke his heart to hear his little sister sobbing and pleading with him, but she wouldn't be in any physical danger if he skipped out on school, whereas Nell just might be.
He hadn't been planning to go out on the grounds. Joshua was absolutely not fond of winter and even though by the end of March it would be starting to clear up, right now it was much too snowy and unpleasant for his tastes. In fact, it was only in passing one of the elegant windows on the first floor and glancing outside that he noticed two familiar people. The moment he saw Elaine get hit by the first shock he was switching directions and jogging slightly toward the front doors, wanting to get outside and go help before anything too bad happened. He arrived on the scene just in time to see Elaine stumble backward and fall, and that sealed the fate of the Thunder student quite nicely. Joshua said nothing at first, he merely walked up and punched him in the face as hard as he could, then grabbed his arm and twisted it backward. He was only planning to immobilise the jerk, but Josh was a lot stronger than he was sometimes given credit for when he was this angry. The snap was followed by a cry of pain, but the Fire graduate didn't give a fuck if this kid was in pain.
"You are pathetic," he snarled, the anger saturating every last bit of his tone. "Don't you ever, ever touch her again or I'll break your fucking neck next time." He let go and shoved the Thunder student hard, then turned to Elaine as the guy bolted--though not without singing his arm with some of his fire as a sort of a kicked-while-he's-down move. Josh wasn't fair when you brought his friends into something. Breathing hard and able to hear the blood rushing and his heart pounding in his ears--fuck, he was so angry--Joshua stalked over to Elaine. "Here, take my hand and let me help you up," he said and held out his uninjured hand, knowing that she didn't like to be touched without warning. "What a prick. Are you alright?" Then he hesitated. "I don't... I don't know whose side you're on, but it doesn't matter. That was cheap, that wasn't fair."

Elaine had not been ready for him to, for all intents and purposes, evade the brunt of her attacks. She didn't have a fighting style that made good use of powerful wind attacks, but she'd thought that she might at least have done something that would deter him. No such luck—while the blind girl was struggling to conceal the signs that she was weakening so quickly, this thunder student was rushing forward, meaning to touch her. She tried to go into the stance her aunt had shown her, tried to easily evade that attack in the same way she had in her sparring sessions with Ace, but she simply couldn't.
His fingers touched her skin, and the shock followed in a powerful discharge. The force of it had her stumbling several steps backward, trying her best to maintain balance. But it was all in vain; her legs gave out in the end, and her side hit the ground painfully, her elbow twisting the wrong way. Elaine bit her lip to stifle the wordless yell of pain that wished to emerge, but a groan still emerged, a few tears reaching the corners of her eyes. That was a strain if she'd ever had one.
All currents in the air stopped. Elaine didn't have the energy or the wish to watch this boy as he did what she knew he was going to do next. Kick her while she was down, or something along the lines of that most likely. She pulled her head up for a second, starting to rise to a sitting position, but the elbow she still had underneath her twinged agonizingly, making her fall back to the ground and wait. She closed her eyes, her face growing passive to hide the rage that was flying about inside her, making her wish she could break his nose, snap his shins, and throw him in the lake for good measure. She'd like to hear him try to swim like that.
However, the next hit never came. Elaine's blind eyes opened in surprise when she heard the tell-tale sound of a fist hitting a face. Hoping that it was her assailant's face being pounded, she listened and almost jumped when she heard the snap of a bone breaking. She'd heard it before—it was definitely a broken bone. Nothing else gave her that particular feeling in her stomach. Other people had said that they could make the sound by breaking supple stick of the like, but the blind girl's ear were too keen to be tricked like that. The thunder boy's bone had been broken, and he had given a cry of agony afterward.
It was only when she heard the familiar voice that she was able to relax a bit and push herself so that she was lying on her back, no longer pinning the strained elbow. The snow on the ground felt good against the electric burn on her other arm, too, so it was a win win. Other than the fact that she was too weak to stand and starting to get very, very cold. But Josh was there, so she'd be ok. She waited as he told the boy off and felt a slight bit of heat as some fire was put into play. Not much, though, considering Elaine didn't hear any of the crackling or anything.
She opened her eyes when she heard him approaching, giving him a very slight smile of thanks. He told her to take his hand, so she reached up with the burned arm to find it without the use of her wind sight. She had to grope about a bit, but eventually she found it and was hauled to her feet. Then the girl did something very, very out of character. Two parts relief and one part weakness bade she lean into the man and wrap her arms around him. She ignore the pain of the various injuries the dick had just given her, and pushed her face into his chest. God, he was warm. It was so great having fire students as friends sometimes.
Though she didn't mean to let go of him until he showed some sign of dislike or disapproval—at which point she would as fast as her strength would allow—after she had gained control of her tumultuous emotions, she loosened her grip enough to pull her face away from him. ”Thank you, Josh. I'm a little banged up, but I'm ok. Thank you.” For a half a second she felt a memory rise up within her, of one of the few times her father had spend a long time with her. How she'd really, really wanted to feel him wrap his arms around her and make her feel safe. Her expression of gratitude faltered for a second as she felt that same desire again, but she pushed it down inside of her again, resisting the urge to shake her head.
She leaned her forehead on his chest again, leaving room for her to speak. ”I...I have friends on both sides, and I'm loyal to all of them. I haven't chosen yet. I don't think I can.” She grimaced as she considered the fact that staying neutral had done nothing to make her any safer. If Josh hadn't seen what had happened, she would have ended up worse than if she'd decided, since no one had felt a need to come and help her out.

He noticed the burn on Elaine's arm as he helped her up, and Joshua had half a mind to stalk off and find that stupid kid, bash his head into the lovely brick walls of the castle. Perhaps then he would realise how bad of an idea it had been to mess with a friend of Joshua Dale's. He didn't have many of those--friends, like. He had a lot of people whom he was 'civil' around and a hell of a lot more that he didn't like, but friends were a rarity. So when he managed to get along with someone and they treated him well, he'd defend them with all the ferocity he had. A lot of people saw Joshua as a bad person by default with no room for improvements, but that was because they hadn't seen him interacting with his friends or his sister. He was protective and kind toward those whom he held in high regards. Especially Annabel of course being that they were related by blood and she was his baby sister, but that didn't mean he wouldn't risk life and limb for a friend.
The hug, however, stunned him. He stiffened slightly in reaction and he was sure Elaine could feel the tension in his muscles as he froze. But then his expression softened a little and he put his arms around her in a sign of comfort, a strange emotion rising in his throat as he saw how vulnerable the poor girl was at the moment. That Thunder student had really done a number on her and if anything it just made him even more thankful that he'd chosen to side against them. "That burn on your arm looks pretty bad," he said regretfully, irritated that he hadn't been able to get here sooner. Just a couple of seconds and he might have been able to stop Aldridge from doing so much damage! But there was no use dwelling on the 'what ifs' and the 'could haves' because he hadn't and that was it. "We should go up to the Medical Wing and get it treated," he suggested gently. "I'll come with you, if you want," he added, even though he'd said 'we' to begin with and so had obviously been indicating the both of them. "It's pretty dangerous for anyone to hang around alone any more."
There was a bitterness in his tone, a sharp and acidic edge. He still hated the entirety of this war and the stupid reason that it had even got started to begin with. Worst of all was the fact that they were blaming Nell and no matter how much he might want to be able to hang around his familiar haunts in the Fire dormitories, he wasn't going to side against someone that he could almost call a friend. "I'd heal it for you myself," he said, "but I'm afraid that it's an electric burn and only a Thunder elemental would be able to reverse the damage." Which was alright if they planned to go to Medical, considering there were a couple of nurses from each element that were always willing to help out. They'd be overrun because of the war, however, so he'd also tag along just to make sure that Elaine didn't get overwhelmed by the massive crowd of people that would be hanging around in the waiting room. He could tell that she was exhausted by having used her powers and taken the beating from the idiotic Thunder boy and so she likely wouldn't be able to rely on her wind sight for too much at the moment. But that was alright, that was where he came in. There was no way that Josh was going to leave a friend of his hanging. Absolutely none.
The sturdiness of his weight was able to support them both with ease as Elaine leaned on his chest, Joshua allowing her to do so because he understood how she must be feeling and he wanted to be there for her. She hesitantly said that she didn't want to take a side, and Joshua was silent for a long moment as he considered this. She wasn't his enemy, but as things went she also wasn't his ally at the moment. It seemed so strange that someone as nice and as sweet as Elaine would have friends in such a dark Alliance, and then Joshua reminded himself that for all intents and purposes he was usually a part of said Alliance. Touché, he thought to himself, a snide edge to it. "I..." Joshua knew that he would be selfish if he expected her to pick a side, so he trailed off and then nodded a bit. "I understand. Wars tend to tear friendships apart." He swallowed. "I won't let that happen to us, though. I'll still be your friend no matter who you choose." Wind was neutral, they were allowed to stay as such if they wished. But if she had to side with his old allies because of some friend that wouldn't allow otherwise... he supposed he might be able to forgive her in the end.
Depending on how this war turned out, that is. What if Nell's was not the victorious side? What if she... what if she didn't make it? Oh, god, don't even think like that! It was a horrible thought and it actually made him feel regretful. He didn't want that to happen to her. He cared whether she made it out of this, he really did. They might have started out as enemies, but he had made his decision--he considered her a friend. She might not return those thoughts, but she had saved his life and he was going to feel like a complete asshole if he didn't try to do the same. "I do think Nell is innocent, though," he said quietly after a long pause. "I've sided with Earth and Water, if you haven't heard." In an attempt to make light, he chuckled and said, "They practically exiled me and everything. They sure like dramatics." But there was little humour in the laugh, he sounded more tired than he did amused.

Elaine have taken in a quick breath when Josh stiffened, taking a second to see if he warmed up to it and screwing her eyes shut. Just when she was about to pull away in awkward defeat, he relaxed a bit and she felt strong arms wrap around her. She couldn't help it—she smiled and even let a quiet laugh out, there was such a release of emotion. At this point, the blind girl didn't know what to expect from herself when it came to friendship or the like, but this was ok. Even though she was in pain, still angry as shit at the boy who'd attacker her and weak as all get out, this was ok. Even though Josh was angry, the small young woman felt comfort.
She was just on the verge of asking whether anyone was watching in complete shock as the terror of the academy hugged a small blind girl, but then Josh mentioned the burn on her left arm. Most of her humor was lost as she was reminded not only of the pain of the burn, but the soreness of the strained elbow. Me mentioned getting her to the medical wing, and she felt a twinge of apprehension inside of her. Like most people, she didn't like going through the trouble of doctors and stuff. She'd spent plenty of time in the offices before, but she hated all the unfamiliar noises and all the touching they had to do.
At the same time, she didn't like the idea of the burn healing badly. Scar tissue was annoying as hell. And regardless of everything she had her right elbow to think about. It would need a brace, or a sling, or something like that. Which would make her even more of a target. Great. Elaine sighed after a few moments, muttering, ”Yes, I should go.” She didn't want to seem like she was begging or anything, but he offered to come with her and she nodded a little more emphatically than she was apt to do. ”Yes, please do.” It was the closest she could get to actually asking him herself.
All she could do was nod when he said it was dangerous to be alone. She knew that better than most people, but she felt paralyzed. It would be hard to explain to anyone why she couldn't turn on Alex. She just... couldn't Not unless he were actively trying to kill Nell right in front of her. And even then, she'd only protect Nell. She'd never speak to him again, but she could never hurt Alex. He apologized—well, as close to apologizing that Joshua ever got—to her for not being able to heal her burn, but she just shrugged a bit, getting over the first bits of exhaustion. Not that she had her feet, she felt like she could stand on her own.
So she started to pull away from him, but she bumped her strained right elbow against his arm and it burst forth in a remarkable amount of pain. She didn't stumble, cry out, or let those tears of pain that had been threatening her a few minutes ago fall. But she did hiss in pain, the expression hitting her face quickly as she pulled her arm close to her and brought her left hand to her elbow. Damn, that smarted. Who knew a hundred and twenty pounds could hurt a joint that badly. Hugging her arm to herself in the same position a sling would keep it, she let her left arm fall and shrugged as best she could.
”Damn bastard fucked up both arms.” It was muttered under her breath, but he'd be able to hear it. And it would probably surprise him very much, considering Elaine couldn't remember one occasion in which she'd said worse than damn in front of him. But her tone was bland, other than the stress that the throbbing of her arm gave it. She gave Josh's general direction a weak sort of smile, waiting for him to give her a sense of direction. She was not going to use her wind for hours yet. He told her he understood that she hadn't picked a side, and that it tended to destroy friendships. For a second she had the horrible, wrenching feeling of her gut that she got whenever she irrationally believed someone would betray her, and a little bit of the instinctual fear showed on her face for the briefest second.
This made it all the more pronounced a change when Josh said he wouldn't let their friendship fall apart. A real, audible sigh of relief escaped from her, and she deflated a bit as her expression grew a mite more peaceful. Josh didn't know, but he was a very, very important person to her. And Elaine, like the stubborn girl she was, refused to tell him. Probably ever, she thought. For fear of letting it slip out, all she did was give a grateful nod, a real smile finding it's way onto her face. She was really trying to turn her face toward his, too, but it wasn't working. Without her wind, she didn't have a good enough idea of where she should be turning.
One thing she could show him, to the fullest extent of it's strength, was the relief she felt when he said he was going to side with Nell. That meant he thought of Nell as a friend, and that meant that he would protect her as fiercely as he had just protected Elaine. With a wide, beaming smile, she said, ”Oh, thank god! I mean, not that you've been exiled, but Nell couldn't have done anything like that in her life, and I've been so worried. I even spent the night in her apartment last night to give her something to think about other than what happened at breakfast. I feel so--” She stopped, immediately ducking her head a screwing her eyes shut. With a long, shuddering breath, ”I feel so guilty for not being able to take her side....”

Elaine agreed to going to the Medical Wing, something which surprised Joshua and clued him into the fact that she might be a little more than just 'banged up'. He hadn't realised how badly the boy had messed with her other arm, the sprained one, so he didn't know that they would be going to treat more than the electricity burn. Even still, the burn was enough to make him angry and make him want to seriously wound that stupid boy. "Okay, let's go," he said softly. Unlike a lot of people, Joshua was very conscious of Elaine's disability and thus understood that she would be unable to tell which direction the school was in unless she used her wind sight, and he didn't want her using that when she was in such a weakened state. So he slipped a hand around her waist so that he could guide her slowly in the direction of the Academy. Well, it was more of a medium pace, but he had to take care and not to use his much longer and faster strides when he was guiding someone. She was much shorter than him, and he didn't want her struggling to keep up or anything. She'd sounded so grateful for the fact that he was going to help her that it choked him up a little. It wasn't fair that she had to be victimised because of this war?
Or was it even because of the war? Most Wind students weren't fair game until they openly proclaimed a side and fought for it. Everyone understood that it was a neutral element that was usually divided unless the leaders banded together and ordered them all to chose a certain side. This had happened before, but usually Wind just remained an 'anything goes' element, the Switzerland of the Academy. "I'm pretty sure I broke one of his," the Fire graduate hissed through clenched teeth when Elaine revealed that both of her arms were injured pretty badly. "And I burned the other one, so it seems like you're even." He would love to hunt the guy and slit his throat--an eye for an eye, and then some. But murder was illegal and Josh understood that. Putting him into a coma would also most likely lead to something like jail time. One good thing about war, however, was that pointing fingers rarely worked. Everyone tended to just blame whomever they were irritated with whether it had been their fault or not so the Academy didn't take action against people unless there was solid proof. "Why did he attack you, Elaine?" Joshua's brows knitted together in concern. "Aldridge is a bastard, but what did he say? Did he even say anything?" Had she started it? No, no, he couldn't believe that about her. Not even during war.
She seemed so relieved when he said that he was siding with Nell, something that surprised Joshua. He hadn't been aware that there was a mutual friendship going on, considering Josh usually hung out with Nell when it had to do with studying. She'd came over to his apartment once when it was for other reasons, but that had been so that he could apologise for dragging her into the mess with the gang. Elaine expressed obvious concern for Nell, and this made Joshua feel a little better about his friend's neutrality. At least she was on Nell's side in spirit, even if she couldn't actually act against the Fire/Thunder alliance because of the friends she had there as well. "Don't feel guilty," he said, the tension in the air softening as he realised that they were technically on the same side. "I'll look out for her for the both of us, okay?" He even managed to smile a little. "Besides, I doubt you'll be able to do much fighting for either side until that arm heals. Fucking Aldridge. I'd loved to have done more but the bastard turned tail and fucked off. Coward." He hated cowardice and it showed in the way he practically spat the words from his lips. If that Thunder boy came near Elaine again he'd be a dead man, laws against murder or not.
Perhaps all of this stemmed from his relationship with Annabel, but any girls he became friends with, he saw them almost like sisters. He felt the same fierce urge to defend them when they were being targeted, that same urge he got whenever someone picked on his baby sister. Of course, he'd never admit this to Elaine aloud. He didn't want her to think that he assumed she couldn't stick up for herself for that was certainly not the case. He'd have felt the need to be on her side even if she was tough and muscle-y and a headstrong Fire chick. It was just how he felt about his friends. It wasn't as strong of a need when it came to his male friends, but he'd certainly still stick up for them if needed. Then he realised something. "Ah," he said darkly, "I know where I've met Aldridge before. He messed with a good friend of mine, I fucked him up pretty bad. Seems the arrogant prick hasn't learned his lesson. Better learn it soon or there won't be a next time..." There was a threatening overtone to the words. Next time Conrad messed with a friend of his, he'd fucking kill him.
When they reached the Medical Wing, it was just as full as Joshua had expected it to be. He spotted a crowd of Fire students--one was sporting a large gash in their shoulder and wincing, and he supposed the others were there as a sort of defence. Most of the injured people had friends with them that were there to be on guard. "Move the fuck out of my way," he snarled to those who would otherwise have been his allies. "If you start a damned fight with me in the Medical Wing then I know you're all a bunch of low-lives." They glared darkly at him but ultimately stopped blocking the way. "Looks like there's going to be a bit of a wait," he said grimly to Elaine. There was only one chair vacant, too. "You should sit down," he suggested.

”You did.” She said, perfectly matter-of-factly, when Josh mentioned probably breaking that guy's arm. She knew he'd probably wonder how the heck she it so certainly, but sometimes she managed to sound so confident that people didn't ask. They thought they might seem stupid. Which was completely ridiculous—who would suppose a blind girl who be able to pick up on the things she did? She had crazy good hearing, as well as sense of smell, but people tended not to think of that when they looked at a disabled person. Elaine had been expecting Josh to touch her in some way to be her guide, but his hand on her waist was unexpected. She felt a little heat in her face and turned her head sharply away from him to hide it. Damn, she felt so vulnerable right now.
Josh asked her why she'd been attacked, and she gave him a look that told him she was just as bewildered at he was. Taking a deep breath, she tried to ignore the not-so-subtle pain in each arm as she tried to piece it together for herself. ”I asked him the same thing. He laughed, and said he felt like it.” The was apprehension in her tone as she said this, some sort of looking forward to the same thing happened several times during the course of this war. The blind girl fervently wished it to be a short war, but the only way she knew of that would make it end would be the thunders getting what they wanted, which was not an option. At all. With a sad expression, Elaine ventured to speak again, ”He caught me at a bad time, too. If I'd been in better control of myself he wouldn't have had such an easy time.”
His tone was softer when he answered her about Nell, and she instinctive turned back toward him a little, cocking her head toward him in the way she was apt to do. It was a movement designed more to get her ears in the right position than to help her eyes, but it still conveyed the same message, body-language-wise. Elaine felt a small smile bloom on her lips at his consolation, glad she had someone telling her she wasn't a total fool. He continued, and she ducked her head a bit as an amused smile grew bigger. She even managed to giggle quietly for a second. ”What else could you have done without getting expelled?”
Elaine was hardly heartless, but the fog she cast over her deeper emotions allowed her to think rather...coldly about several things. Hurting the person who'd hurt her? That was alright. She'd do it herself, and indeed had tried, even though her efforts had been vain. Elaine would likely have been a thunder if she hadn't had the tendency to be kind to those she didn't know very well. Those who hadn't hurt her. As far as she knew, neither of her parents had been elementals, either, nor her aunt. So she had no idea whether wind was genetic for her family. Elaine finally nodded belatedly. Her tone was determined and rather grim when she spoke, ”If Nell's ever in trouble in my presence, I'll help her. I can't hang around her all the time, like you can, but I will chose her side if I'm forced.”
Elaine listened, noting what Josh said about this Aldridge guy's reputation, but she didn't answer. Her expression grew pensive as she tried to think of something she'd heard or smelled that she could look out for in the future, make sure he didn't sneak up on her again. Other than the sound of his voice, she couldn't think of anything. She hadn't gotten close enough to smell anything of him while they were outside. Closing her eyes tightly, Elaine got a pained look and shuddered a bit. Damn, she hated the feeling of being snuck up on. It made her feel.... Well, disabled. She knew Josh would feel the very blatant chill, but couldn't decide whether she wanted him to ask whether she was ok or not.
She was stolidly silent when they ran into the group of fire students, falling back into the noiseless fierceness she donned under normal circumstances when she felt threatened. Though she felt weak, she readied herself for...well, anything, the mental preparation coinciding with subconscious leaning forward slightly and spreading her feet apart. But they dispersed after a few seconds, and she leaned back into Josh. She shrugged a bit when he said there was going to be a wait, and then nodded when he spoke about a chair. ”You should probably help me to it.” She said softly, knowing he would be close enough to hear. Then, despite a deep wish not to say this, she found herself speaking, ”You probably don't want to hold hands, but.... Some sort of touch would be helpful, even when I'm sitting. Stabilizing.... I guess.”

The air started to swelter uncomfortably when Elaine told him what the Thunder boy had said, and it took massive amounts of concentration for Joshua to calm himself down enough to cool the air once more. Stupid heat manipulation. It happened involuntarily on occasion when he was in high school but now that he'd learned to actually control the heat it was like an awkward extension of his rage. When you felt the air grow hot around him, you knew he was upset whether he said anything about it or not. "That--if he--I swear--" He could barely form words enough to spit out a coherent sentence past the anger that bubbled in his chest, so he took a moment to breathe and calm himself down a tiny bit. "Yeah, that's what he said?" Joshua managed at last, his tone completely lethal. "Well I feel like slitting his god damned throat, so we'll see how well that goes the next time I run into him." Joshua was trembling now. It might have seemed to anyone else like fear or simple shivering from the cold, but in reality he was just so angry that his system didn't seem to be able to hold all the rage. He was like a volcano packed to the top and begging for an eruption.
He nodded when Elaine stuck up for herself in a sense. "I know," he agreed. "You're not weak, and I wish you'd have been able to show Aldridge that yourself. He deserved a taste of what you can do." Everyone underestimated Elaine because she was blind, and whilst Joshua didn't have a disability and couldn't really understand, he could sort of guess how that felt. Not good at all. He wished she'd been able to turn around and hand the stupid boy's ass to him. But she hadn't been able to--luck hadn't been on Elaine's side today, it seemed, and she'd been beaten by the stupid prick. No matter. Joshua would take care of the situation. "Next time, though," he said. "If he ever touches you again, I'm sure you'll be able to thrash him." Joshua had confidence in Elaine, he really did. Her wind sight fascinated him, the way she was able to see in all directions and protect herself from all sides. Of course, it had taken being blind for her wind powers to adapt to that, but it was still something very useful. Practically everything unusual and unexpected managed to amaze Josh. He was naturally curious and intellectual, he craved knowledge and understanding as much as some people craved romance and friendship. He needed his books where others needed company. But book-learned knowledge wasn't the only kind that interested him.
Joshua scowled a little. "Nothing," he admitted grudgingly, sounding like this displeased him greatly. "Even what I did do was reckless, but hopefully I'll get away with it because of the war." The way he said 'hopefully' seemed to hang in the air for a moment, a sharp reminder that he was not quite off the hook yet. Maybe that stupid kid would be too stubborn to go whining for the help of the Academy and he would get away with it that way, but if not he was just going to have to hope that they'd pass it off to a game of 'he said, she said' and be done with it. "I don't care, though," he added a little fiercely. "He deserved what I did to him. I'dve done more if he hadn't ran off, the little coward." This was a side of Josh that Elaine had never truly seen before. She'd seen him angry, but this was true anger, this was violent anger. Some had the idiocy to doubt that Josh would ever hurt anybody. 'All bark and no bite,' they'd accuse. It was usually these stupid and smug people that ended up hurt, or at least got to watch in horror as he proved them wrong in horrific ways.
He didn't like being labelled as violent, psychopathic, murderous, or whatever other labels they felt like coming up with for him. It wasn't like he took pride in the fact that shit happened when he lost his temper. Hell, it had done more harm than good in elementary. The private school he'd went to was opposed to violence. If he'd told on the boys that pushed him around earlier, maybe it would have been they who took the fall. But no. Joshua's pride had made him withhold the urge to become a 'rat', and he'd waited until shit got in too deep. They started to physically assault him--surrounding him to block off his escape, targeting him as a group. And he'd fought back. They'd finally broken his resolve to be pacifistic, and he'd fought back hard. Who had ended up with the expulsion and the long letter home when he broke someone's arm? Joshua, of course. No one would believe that 'they started it'. His father had been furious with him, and even the memory was enough to make his gut clench with fear. That was just the early stages. Now he was much older, and he had little qualms about violence as he'd once had. He didn't care that Aldridge's arm was broken. He was glad he'd broken it, though he did wish he'd gotten the other one, too. Of course, this too would fade. There was always regret in the end. But right now... right now all he felt was anger.
He was glad when Elaine said that her loyalties to Nell would win out if anyone tried to hurt her, relieved to know that someone else would be looking out for her even if they wouldn't declare it aloud. But then he furrowed his brow slightly. "Who... who is it that ties your loyalties down to neutral?" he wondered hesitantly after a moment. He didn't know who was friends with Elaine and who was not. That was the case with most of his friends--he never really opted to hang out with anyone in a group of people, so he usually ended up being surprised when he found out that two of the people he got along with also liked one another. Then, realising that it might be too much to ask, he corrected himself with, "Only if you want to answer, Elaine. It's alright if you don't. I was just... curious." He didn't see her as the type to get along with the brash arrogance of the Fire elementals or the dark demeanour of the Thunder students. But clearly she did if she had loyalties to them in some way, right? At least she'll choose Nell if it all comes down to it, he reminded himself, and in the end that was all that mattered to Josh.
"Right," he said apologetically, having forgot that she might need help in his distraction by all of the people glaring at him. It was uncomfortable to have people with whom you were once allied staring you down. The Medical Wing was a place of declared peace, a sanctuary of sorts for the injured. It was against some unspoken rule to hurt anyone here. But it still made him a little uncomfortable. He helped Elaine into the chair and then hesitated a little when she spoke. "You can hold my hand if you want," he said, his tone a little softer. He saw her almost like a little sister of sorts rather than anything else, so anything he did was more to protect her than for personal benefit. And he was not thinking, so when he offered a hand it was automatically his left. He was too distracted to think of the fact that it had a nasty slash across the palm, that Elaine would be able to see the mess his hand was in. He was just left-handed, so he offered it purely on instinct.

His words were filled with a venom that the blind girl had never heard from him before. Had she not already known him well enough to feel trust, she would have fled then and there. As it was, the ire in his tone made her shudder a little, though she tried to hide it from him. Mixed feelings entered her, not knowing whether she was a little unhappy at this major flaw of his or very, very glad she had someone like him as a sort of protector. As it was, even though he was tensing and spewing with rage, his arm around her waist as he lead her to the medical wing was still gentle and guarding.
He said she wasn't weak, and the mostly emotionless expression that had covered her face parted enough for her to give the blackness in front of her a wry smile. She nodded the slightest bit, thinking to herself what she could have done differently in order to gain the upper hand. She didn't know what grade he was in—probably at least a junior, maybe older—but she was a clever fighter, and always had been. She'd been scrappy and tough before she'd gained her powers, often having to fight off the bullies her cousin had thrown at her just in order to get away and home. But no need to tell Josh that. He said that next time he was sure she'd be able to thrash him, and she opened her mouth to say softly, ”I hope there isn't a next time.” But yes, she also hoped that if there was, she'd be able to fight him off by herself.
But then she stupidly said something that got him back on the track of what he would do to that boy if he ever saw him again. She didn't show any outward reaction, though even this accepting blind girl was getting a bit unnerved by the scope of Joshua's wrath. Still, she leaned into him slightly, both because she was starting to feel a real, throbbing pain in her left arm and because she though he might appreciate an unspoken comfort such as this. Prideful Josh wouldn't take a comforting hug or words of consolation. But she hoped that something to subtle as this would maybe make it through his guard. Wars got to everyone.
He asked who it was that kept her from choosing Nell's side completely, and she felt herself pulling away from him slightly. A little frown found her lips as she wondered whether or not he would approve of the choice of friends she had. Not that she felt like she needed to hold herself up to anyone else's standards, but she didn't want to have their friendship strained by the fact that she cared for the fire leader. Whom she'd heard was not on great terms with Josh. He seemed to detect the discomfort in her, as he very quickly told her she didn't have to answer if she didn't want. That brought a grateful smile, but she still felt a little knot in her chest.
”Alexandre Blackthorn.” She said quietly, ”He's been very nice to me, and actually got a whole lot of the fire students to stop harassing me.”
She allowed him to lead her to the chair, which he did very well. He was a surprisingly good guide. She actually felt a little heat in her cheeks as she detected the softer tone of his voice when he said she could hold his hand. She actually been expecting him to say no, and then put his hand on her shoulder or the like. Shows how much she really knew him. She Reached up with both hands until she found his forearm, then dropped the arm the was farthest from him and let her other hand graze down the inside of his arm until she found his hand. At which point all other thought left her as she gained a shocked expression.
That scar had never been there before. She knew, she knew the he had never had this scar in the previous times she'd been around him. And it was nasty. It took a great amount of self control not to just blurt it out, but she couldn't help running two of her fingers along it's length once or twice to get an image of it in her mind. Then she asked, quiet and subdued, ”Josh.... What happened to your hand?”

Joshua gave a solemn dip of his head when she said she hoped that there wasn't a next time--he knew she couldn't see it, but it was more of his own personal agreement. "We all hope," he sighed, his words weighed down by the sheer pressure this war had put on pretty much everyone. "But that's all we really can do. Hope, I mean. There's no certainty in times like these." He hadn't predicted a week ago that a blood hunt would be called on Nell, hadn't predicted that he'd be kicked out of the one place in the Academy that had even somewhat accepted him, hadn't known he'd be breaking the arm of some jerkass Thunder student to protect Elaine. Wars threw everyone off their game. "I'm hoping for the best, too." His words were softer than they had been before, less filled with a hard edge. He wasn't talking about thrashing anyone or why he had been so angry, so there was a moment of calm. His anger didn't just vanish at the drop of a hat, however, so he was back off on his tangent the moment Elaine happened to mention the Thunder boy and his dirty attack. It really was low, picking on the blind girl.
"Did you know him?" Joshua asked suddenly, wondering whether the boy had even known she was blind to begin with. Not that it mattered to Joshua--you hurt his friends and you were a dead man no matter the circumstances. Conrad could have been the blind one and Elaine the instigator; the fact was, Elaine was Joshua's friend. He looked out for friends, he protected his friends. And if you meant them any ill will, you'd made yourself an automatic enemy. "Hate that kid. Fucking hate him." Josh's angry words dissolved into mutterings under his breath that may or may not have been understandable to the blind girl with her excellent hearing. Not that he was saying anything unusual, just what you'd expect from an outraged Fire graduate.
Whatever answer he'd been expecting from Elaine, this hadn't been it. He blinked. "Blackthorn?" The shock was evident in his tone. Then, in an attempt to cover his own skin and reassure her that he wasn't going to judge her any different for a friendship with him, he said, "Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just... it's not what I expected." He had never gotten along with the arrogant and reckless Fire leader. Where Alexandre was controlling, Joshua was defiant. Where he was cheerful and a prankster, Josh was quiet and serious. Their natures conflicted and thus were a recipe for disaster. Not only that, but Josh usually refused to follow any orders. He'd been the Fire leader once and he hadn't been that much of a dick when it came to times like these. "But... it's good he's gotten some of my--erm, his allies to quit bothering you," he decided. There was a subtle request for truce in his tone. He didn't want to ruin their friendship because of Alex. "I may not get along with him, but if he looks out for you that's all I need to hear." He really did view Elaine like a sister.
He tensed up immediately when she asked about his hand, instinctively jerking it back as if her touch had electrocuted him. He felt guilty about doing so a moment later--Josh, that's rude!--but he couldn't bring himself to extend it again and risk her being able to better 'examine' the scarring. Plus, her touch had bothered the painful injury. It had closed over enough, but the area around it was still sore. Of all his scars, it was the worst in terms of healing considering every time he closed his hand it had a chance of bothering it. "Just, uh, an accident," he said evasively, in a tone that suggested that he didn't want to talk too much about it. Ducking his head a little, he offered her his right hand instead--so much safer--and said, "Sorry for pulling back just then, I didn't expect--yeah..."

Elaine actually sighed, showing her discomfort by lowering her head a little bit and shaking her head. ”No, I didn't know him. Never met him before. I try to stay away from the thunders.” They were very, very hard for even her to read, and since they built up anger and grudges until suddenly frying you from behind, she tried to just avoid them. As if they weren't there if she didn't acknowledge them. It had worked for awhile actually, because they were normally the type of people not to give a shit if you don't give a shit. But obviously wars changed things.
Then came the conversation about Alex. This time Elaine actually made an audible noise as she sighed, a short little grunt as she turned her head away from him and shook it again. ”Yeah, I've been getting that reaction a lot, recently.” For some reason, however, she was less worried about how Josh would react than how Nell reacted. Josh was the type to let other people live their own lives, and he already knew where Elaine's ultimate loyalties lay. Still, there was an unprecendented amount of releif welling through her when he said there wasn't anything wrong with that. Which was good. If he had started chewing her out she would have gotten defensive regardless of her earlier feelings.
Joshua said the right things, however, and soon she was relaxed again, head facing forward and a small smile of gratefulness on her lips. She waited a second, then spoke. ”I may be underestimated a lot, but honestly, wars are harder on me than most people. If I stay neutral for now, then my friendship with Alex could save me a lot of trouble. I also might....” Elaine ducked her head again, frowning a little. She had to admit she was a bit unsure about this next part. Although not the type of person to usually gush about this sort of thing, she did feel some sort of need to gain Josh's approval. ”I might be able to talk to him.” About Nell, she meant. Maybe change his mind.
Whatever the blind girl had been expecting, it had not been the actual reaction. Josh broke her grip so fast and powerfully that she had to actively keep her balance in her seat. Sometimes he didn't know his strength. But instead of attempting to shoot his a disapproving look, Elaine waited with a blank expression for him to make another move. She was well aware of the fine line Josh's friends had to walk sometimes, and this was obviously something that bothered him a great deal. So she waited, gaining a bit of a smirk when he said it was an accident.
”You wouldn't have done that if it was just an accident.” She said, quietly enough so that only he could hear it. She waited just long enough to allow him to start reacting to that statement before holding up a hand of her own and ducking her head the slightest bit. ”Don't worry, I won't ask right now. Might ask later, but only if you're in a really good mood.” Her tone and her expression both gave subtle hints that she was being humorous, and that he really shouldn't worry about it. Hopefully he knew her well enough to pick up on that.
At his words, she raised her hands again to seek out the new offering, much in the same way as she had found the last. Then, after a couple of seconds of silence, the incorrigible young wind student gained a little grin and said, ”Besides, I happen you really like scars.” It was not said in any flirtatious manner—god no!--but it was a little tease she couldn't help but throw in there.

Apparently Elaine hadn't even known her attacker, and something about that made Joshua even more angry. His anger was seriously starting to become a problem--he felt like he could barely breathe past the unbridled desire to absolutely fucking kill this asshole. In fact, if he hadn't been so concerned with taking Elaine to get treatment for her injuries he might have just gone after the Thunder boy and drowned him in the lake. Or at least almost drowned him; give him a sort of a scare so that the idiot never messed with a friend of Josh Dale's again. If this had been the first time, maybe he wouldn't have been so angry. But it wasn't. "Asshole needs to learn not to touch my friends," he hissed, gray eyes sparking dangerously. He was going to go into a fit of full-blown rage in a minute. It was perhaps a good thing that the conversation started to cool down after that, else he might just have done something he'd regret.
His lips twitched a little. "I won't judge you, really," he promised. "You don't mention the people I've been with, so I can extend the same respect." And really, Joshua's situation was a lot less commendable. Elaine was actually falling for this Alex guy whereas Joshua just had a romantic history with people he barely knew. He'd never been in love before and he acknowledged this for a moment, wondering what it must feel like to have enough affection for someone that you'd go against your own side to protect your relationship with him. I mean, he'd done it for Nell, but it wasn't like that. "Plus, the shit I've got with Alex has nothing to do with you or how you feel about him." He smiled a bit. "It's personal. If the guy makes you happy, Elaine, go for it."
Though he certainly planned to stick with Nell, he could understand now why Elaine wanted neutrality so bad. And it made sense that Alexandre could protect her from his side of the war if she didn't outright oppose them. "No one would hold it against you." Well, alright. So maybe some assholes would hold it against Elaine or just not understand where she was coming from. But he wasn't, and he was pretty sure that Nell wouldn't either. Which begged the question, "Nell... does she know?" He hadn't expected Elaine to suggest that she convince the Fire leader of his friend's innocence, but he was immediately intrigued when she mentioned it. If he'd been sitting down he'd have leaned forward to listen closer, but as it was he just said, "Oh? Are you sure?" His brow furrowed. "Fire seemed pretty sold. Judging by the death threats against me and all." He shrugged. It didn't bother him. Well... okay, it bothered him a lot. He was going to pretend it didn't. "Besides, they... they think she did it."
Curse her for being so perceptive. Even though she was joking when she said she might bring it up when he was in a better mood, Joshua gave a sharp shake of his head. "No. Don't." It didn't take too much to figure out that it was something he was not going to talk about. He shoved his hand in his pocket and offered the other one instead, the one that wasn't marked with horrible scars. Heaven forbid she find out about the jagged scar on his cheek. She said that she liked scars, and to this he said nothing. Even though she was kidding, it was just too sensitive a subject for Josh at the moment.
