today hadn't been planned to be one of the afternoons where she found her brother and ended up ramming her head against his. they were twins, yes, but that didn't necessarily mean that they instantly had a bond formed where they were inseparable. asha preferred to have her brother placed as far away from her as could be possibly done. whenever the two of them met there was going to be some explosion that would startle others but be completely common for the two woods children. the problem between the two of them was that everything about them was too similar, they had the same personality and aspired to reach the same types of goals. ace and asha could banter with each other for only a brief bit of time. playfulness was something that didn't exist between the two twins. one would say something that other took personally and then the spitfire insults would start. only short after one would launch themselves at the other and that would begin the physical part of their disagreements. ace felt no shame in attacking his sister, he knew that she was capable of taking the hits and then retaliating twice as hard. only plenty of occasions she would be the one grappling at ace while he screamed mercy because she had caused him serious amounts of pain. it was a surprise to no one that they were the most vicious rivals out of the whole student body at the academy. with the way that they acted towards each other it came was a shock that one of them hadn't been killed by the other yet.
the day had been once that asha had enjoyed, nothing had happened that dampened the unusually chipper mood that she had woken up to. shea had tackled her awake, quite literally, and that was something that could have easily worked up into a rage. asha enjoyed her sleep, one day she had even managed to sleep for twenty three consecutive hours. this morning though it was no bother to asha woods. she tangled herself around her best friend and bit her affectionately on her shoulder. shea had cried out, asha's bites were rough but the seventeen year old girl only meant to tell shea that she loved her. they dressed and then had a nice breakfast in the mess hall, both things contained nothing that asha could pick at or whine about. the rest of their morning had spent wandering around the castle, popping into the library to singe some of the pages that the people were reading. when someone spotted them they dashed out of the library and returned to the mess hall to eat a lunch that asha actually remarked good things about. the academy's food was one of her favorite things to grumble about. she could go off on a whole tangent about how horrid the soup tasted or the vile things that she found lodged in her mash potatoes. she was quiet today, only rambling on about the explosive outburst she had the day before. someone had actually been foolish enough to think that they could lean over and try to copy her notes. in return asha had burnt a good portion of their head and received a week's worth of detention.
it was a mistake when they decided that it could be potentially joyful to emerge out onto the grounds and stroll along while inhaling the fresh air. the temperature had slightly rose and the snow was beginning to disappear, something that boosted asha's mood even more. she would have gladly heated all of the mounds of snow that surrounded the academy until all that was left were puddles. she then reconsidered the idea, even having to walk through something as miniscule as a puddle could rob her of her breath. she would have to the settle with the snow until it became sunny and hot enough that it would all be melted. she was slightly delusional for slipping on a dress and sandals, but if she focused enough it was only gave her a slight headache to melt the snow in her path. it wasn't even a bother for shea to sweep her hand and have a path melted out for them. she was a freshmen in college, her skills had come further along then asha's. their conversation was light, shea was going on about a thunder boy that had caught her interest ever since he had accidentally electrocuted her while asha listened and threw in some of her quips because it was an entertaining tale. asha shoved at shea when she told her that she could see ace lingering over by the lake. countless times she had confided in her about how irritating her brother was and she would have liked it best if he simply vanished without any reason. to have her joking about him was something that could instantly irritate asha. with a grunt she changed directions to head towards the lake, all for the sake of proving her best friend wrong.
she loudly cursed when the wavy locks and beauty marked face of her brother became more clear and she could easily label it as ace. avoiding him had become something that was a second nature to her, she didn't even have to actually think about it anymore. his schedule was embedded in her mind, she knew his choice of friends, and could easily list off all the places of where he was prone to be spotted. the only time they actually interacted was in the common room of the fire dormitory. they were always surrounded though so much couldn't happen without someone stepping between them to put out the sparks of what could be a horribly dangerous fire. asha nudged at shea, telling her that they should turn around and remark their path before ace recognized that she was the figure coming closer to him. they were about to retreat back towards the academy when the obnoxious cry of ace sounded from close to the lake. asha didn't counter into the situation that ace was drawing her close to the shore of the lake for a reason. he had challenged her with a simple cry and she would be damned if she turned around because he had a great advantage over her. even the sight of him was enough to ruin a day that she had been considering good. now it was ruined. shea called out to asha, saying something about how ace was only provoking her. asha snapped back with extremely inappropriate words. she had said enough to keep shea glued to her spot. sometimes asha's words wounded deeper than she imagined. the hurt on her friend's face was something she could address at the moment. her brother was taunting her and that was what she had to bother with.
it was a doomed choice from the moment she reached the shore of the lake. ace had a glimmer in his eyes, something that seemed truly sinister was sparked in his stare. words didn't even need to be spoken between them, a simple stare was enough to create a rage within asha. there was no use of her powers yet, things would get physical before either of them resorted to the drastic choice of attacking the other with something like a fireball. she shoved him at first, not using much force but enough umph worked into it that he stumbled a few feet. his reaction was a grunt and he regained his foot quickly. asha let out a cry when he responded with a rough punch to her stomach. she gasped out for air and narrowed her eyes at him. she had enough irritation against him that it was effortless to conjure up a small sphere of fire and send it aimed towards him. all she managed to catch was the tips of his fingers, he had swiftly darted to the side and evaded the brunt of the attack. his anger was worked up at the attack towards him and the tunnel of flames directed towards her were something that she had never seen before from ace. the possibilities were endless when someone was feeling an extreme emotion, ace showed that perfectly. asha threw her hands up over her face and tried to stagger to the side. her scream was shrill when the flames licked at her arms and chest, a pain was felt that was so intense asha felt that no words could match it. she unsteadily stepped back, her mind numbed from the anguish that was focused on her chest and arms. she couldn't even register that the front of her dress was singed and she now smelt like a dying fire.
ace turned and fled once he surveyed the aftermath and realized how deep of damage he had done to his sister. asha's awareness had dulled, otherwise she would have made an attempt to try and crawl after her bother with some sort of counter in mind. he was actually the one crawling, he was drained from the show of powers that he played onto his sister. her eyes were blurred with tears that had been summoned when she felt the heat caressing her skin. asha attempted to blink them away, to restore her vision would have been pleasant. the sobs coming from her violent, the pain wouldn't allow her to cry silently. all she could continue to do was stumble backwards and hope that she would collide with a tree or person or even fall into a bush. though she tried to command her legs to halt it seemed that her body refused to listen. nothing was working correctly: she couldn't yell because her mouth was tightly shut, her vision wouldn't clear, and her legs weren't listening to her pleas to stop. a raw cry was worked out of her when the firmness of the ground left her and she crashed into the still surface of the lake. she couldn't swim, any sort of body was something that was terrified of. hell, it was a challenge for her to try and shower each night. asha began to twirl about violently, working herself away from where feet actually touched the bottom of the lake to the deeper section. she was pulled underneath the surface by the thrashing, she tried to cry out but was only answered with water filling her lungs. terror was the only thing that drove her to flail her searing arms about, the only part of her that could be seen above the surface of the lake. she had no wishes to drown today.

It was cold, but thankfully Ashton could feel his powers responding to him a little more easily as of late. And this was an especially good thing considering the war. Being a leader was rough, even if you were a stand in--he wanted to protect Nell, who was his friend, but he was targeted almost daily by the other students. Especially the kids in Fire. Ashton had been cornered by a group of the guys in his grade that had before just shoved him around a little and made threats. The boy had assumed that they were just your typical high-school bullies--all bark and no bite, so he'd ignored them. They'd proved him oh so wrong when they'd burned him badly and locked him in the dungeons, their idea of a joke. He hadn't been let out until a teacher had been patrolling through the dungeons by chance and found the poor unconscious Earth student slumped against the far wall. His burns had been treated, but they hadn't caught it quite in time for it to be healed quickly; he now had blisters and red marks and horrible pain in his forearm. Ash sucked it up as best as he could, however, not wanting to appear weak and leave some sort of an opening for other people to attack him. He was a pacifist by nature, but he wasn't a completely snivelling wimp. He did his best not to cry if attacked, only if you broke his arm or clocked him too hard across the jaw.
In a considerably better mood now that the earth was starting to respond to him again, the boy wore a light smile as he wrapped the scarf around his neck and stepped onto the grounds. A chill wind bit at his cheeks, but he refused to let it bother him and his cheery demeanour. Not today. He started off by walking through the forest where his powers felt strongest, making the trees bud with leaves and smiling when dormant branches flowered under his touch. His gift had always fascinated him, but Ashton knew that he was never to take it for granted. His grandmother had drilled this into him, strict and harsh. "It skipped your parents, young man," she'd said sternly as she frowned down at him with her wrinkled expression. "You're lucky it didn't skip you, so you'd better not get too cocky." The way she spoke, Ashton suspected that she might have some sort of ties to the underground organization that was responsible for the Academy and the regulations of power. He'd heard it took the incredible extremes to have them strip you of your gift, but her threats still frightened him enough that he was very careful with his incredibly green thumb. A bird chirped from above, and a soft laugh coloured the air as Ashton glanced up. "What are you doing here, little bird?" he asked quietly. "Shouldn't you still be down south with your family?" Of course, the birds only response was further song that filled him with amusement and made him smile.
After a while of walking, he decided that he should really be getting back to the Academy before he wandered too far out. Ashton was nervous when it came to getting lost in the forests--he didn't have the best sense of direction when it came to places this big, and the forests led right out into the middle of nowhere. One of the disadvantages of the school being built in the mountains, he supposed. If you didn't luck out and wander into Maple Hollow, you'd probably die of starvation out in the barren hills. The landscape was beautiful yet deadly. He had a feeling that there were more than just birds lurking between the trees as well, so he never went in here after dark. During the daylight and with no leafy canopy to block most of the light, it wasn't quite as scary to walk through the previously trodden paths of others that had ventured through. He used one of these paths to retrace his own steps and emerged somewhere near the lake. He marvelled at the sun glancing off the water for a moment, wondering how cold or warm the water would be if he went over and touched it. Curiosity fuelled him and drew him closer, but his heart jumped when he noticed the water thrashing as if there was a struggle.
"Oh god," Ashton breathed, hesitating for only a split second before he started toward the water. Someone was in trouble, he had to help. At the moment their element and current alignment in the war didn't even matter to him--Ashton was too kind to just stand and watch someone drown. He used one of the rocks from the cliffs surrounding it as leverage to dive into the water, the frigid liquid shocking him. But he had a one-track mind at the moment, so he barely noticed the chill as he swam toward the girl. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled them both to shore, coughing and spluttering just a little but otherwise in a much better state than she was at the moment. He recognised her now as a Fire student he'd had trouble with in the past, and this worried the poor guy. What if she attacked him? But he stayed, waiting to see if she'd stir. He was worried more about her health than his own. "Are... are you alright?" he decided to ask.

water was the one fear that could always work asha into a fear that nothing but shea's touch could summon her out of. being burnt was something that she had too much worry over, in time the injuries would heal and if treated right they would vanish cleanly. to be submerged in the water would make her freeze with terror, even thinking about a body of water like a lake would make her begin to tremor. ace had caused her fall into the lake and he had darted off because he couldn't stomach the wholeness of the trouble that he had caused. it would be easy for asha to drown in the lake without anyone ever knowing exactly how her body had floated down to the deep deths of the lake. no one would even wonder where she had disappeared too, it was never uncommon for asha to go missing in action but return a few day later with all of her assignments completed. what a grim fate it would be to have her body eventually resurface on the lake only to have someone discover it when they were peering out at the lake. she had no desire to drown, her life wasn't allow to end at such an early point in her life. she had so much more to amount to, a list of things she wanted to achieve before age served as a blockade. asha couldn't afford to die.
the water was an icy sting against her sting, the only other thing she could focus on besides the fact that she had tried to make it above the surface. the coolness soothed her burns but was working to efficiently all of the other parts of her body. the water that flooded her lungs made it fell like her insides had been infiltrated by an icy tundra, like everything would turn to ice the longer she was plunged into the lake. how could she scream when it felt like ice cubs were lodged in her throad? because of the freezing temperature of the water she felt herself growing more sluggish, not something that she wanted to have factor into her troubles of potentially drowning in the lake. her arms started to move more slowly and trying to bob her head above to the surface was now something that could only be considered as impossible. her crippling fear of water had been cancelled out by her need to survive and take a gasp of fresh air with lungs that were cleared of lake water. now she was tired and her fear could be set into place because her mind was frantic with the need to try and prevail against the lake. she gave one last attempt, her legs kicked slowly in the fashion that she imagined a swimmer would use and she coaxed her arms to move in time with her legs. her lungs worked to pump fresh air but all that happened was she found herself choking on the water invading her throat.
her fate was now sealed, it was something that she couldn't try and twist all because of her fear of water. asha was going to drown in the lake of the academy and her brother would be the one that would have to live with her death hanging over his head. that had to be the only bright thing that would come of out the somber subject of her death. her body was heavy and her lids were drooping because all of the effort was now making her feel dreary and highly desiring the need to slumber. asha couldn't breathe and though she could imagine her face turning blue from lack air she wasn't quite bothered by the fact that she was on the verge of death. asha could only faintly register the splashing and the feeling of the water's slight motion, someone had jumped into the lake. had somebody saw her arms barely flailing over the surface of the lake and decided that it they were going to act noble and try to save her? absently her mind felt something secure around her waist, if she had been more coherent she would have been able to piece together that a random soul had jumped into the lack and was now heaving her to the surface. asha would have tried to kick her legs to take some of her deadweight off of her savior but now it was a wonder that she had even stayed safely locked in their arm.
the moment the stranger had heaved her to the shore she can began to cough violently. her lunges were working hastily to make up for the air she hadn't been able to suck in while she was struggling in the lake. she continued to cough heavily, her body shaking because of the hacks. from her throat all of the water she had inhaled was being released, she spit up onto herself and groaned deeply when it splashed onto her reddened chest. asha twitched, her muscles were relieved from the iciness of the water and having the air on her skin made her shiver because of her lack of clothing. once more she coughed, more to clear her lungs than anything. "fuck...fuck...fuck...i just drowned..." asha gasped out, each word separated by deep breaths that she took to try and restore her breathing. she went to turn roughly onto her side then let out a pained cry when she put weight onto her arm. she couldn't work herself to sit up, her energy was too drained from struggling in the lake. instead she settled with laying on her back, the most comfortable position for her. she scowled at the redness of her arms and the blisters she could feel forming on her chest. tears pricked at her eyes from the pain that had returned, she couldn't command the flow to stop and frowned when her eyes blurred again once more. a void invaded her process of grazing of her body and trying to survey the damage of the situation. "i just drowned and my body is burnt, do i look all right? 'cause i sure as hell don't feel all right." asha's voice held no bite, she only seemed worn and pained. she couldn't see the person who had come to her rescue but at this point she couldn't bothered with seeking him with thanks.

He had never witnessed someone drowning before. It was something that you heard about in movies and in books, but Ash had never actually witnessed the raw act of someone's lungs being flooded with water as cruel current dragged them to their death. It was scary if he thought about it but at the moment all he was thinking about was the fact that it might not be too late, that she had enough energy to struggle and that if she just didn't sink deep enough he'd be able to pull her to shore. He wasn't doing this because he wanted to be some hero, he didn't want a moment of glory in the spotlight by rescuing the damsel in distress--and what a damsel he'd be facing! Asha Woods, her reputation infamous! No, all Ashton wanted was to do his best to help. Because that was what he was by nature, helpful and selfless. If faced with the famous poisoned chalice, he'd always choose to be the one to die, even if his counterpart wasn't the greatest of people. He'd sacrifice himself for another person because deep down Ash didn't think he was worth enough to be bothered saving. His parents had been good to him but he'd never really had anything big to give him self-confidence. He wasn't at the top of his class, he wasn't the best with his powers, he wasn't the strongest fighter--hell, he barely fought at all! He couldn't even claim to be the most peaceful student, because he'd lifted a hand in his own defence more than once.
Ashton's relief when she started to cough up the water from her lungs could not be put into words. If the girl had been in too much of a state to expel the water from her own chest, she likely wouldn't have made it unless someone else came along who was better suited to help. Ashton had never taken any of those courses in first-aid or CPR, and he was starting to seriously regret skipping out on that optional summer class that they always held at the pool near his house. There was always mouth-to-mouth, but he didn't know how to do that either and so it was just a damned good thing for Asha that she still had some sort of a will to live. "Oh thank god," he breathed to himself, lingering nervously on the beach as she coughed up the water, not wanting to leave just in case some sort of complications arose. Ashton glanced around them, wondering if anyone else had witnessed her troubles and was coming to help, but he couldn't seem to see anyone around. He was growing increasingly uncomfortable about the fact that this was Asha Woods, however, the bitchy female Fire student. They were at war and she was his enemy, and not only that she probably had the guts to attack him even if the war counted for nothing at the moment. Still, his desire to protect and help continuously won him over in the fight or flight option. Fight. Not physically, but for her well-being. He'd only feel comfortable leaving once he was sure that there was nothing this girl needed from him. Ashton was too good for his own good, really.
Ash winced when she spoke. She didn't sound as fierce as he'd expected, but it still made him conscious of their elemental differences. He would have pointed out that no, she hadn't drowned, she was sitting here and breathing, but... he didn't want to start a fight. So he stayed quiet, fidgeting nervously with his hands in his lap. When he asked if she was alright, her response was every bit as barbed as it deserved to be. Of course she wasn't alright--it had just been a nervous question in the panic of the moment. "I, um, I didn't notice the burns until now," he confessed, face flushing with colour as he realised he'd missed something so obvious. Ashton could be a tad oblivious with his one-track mind; when he was focusing on the fact that she'd nearly died, he'd completely overlooked her other injuries. "Sorry." He didn't even know if this Fire student cared for apologies--probably not. Most of them sneered at you if you even thought of being nice, and that was why the majority scared him. He tried to award everyone the benefit of the doubt but Fire students tended to be one and the same--scary as hell.
Hesitating nervously for a moment, he eventually asked, "Did you burn yourself?" He didn't know whether it was possible for Fire students to be affected by their own element. He'd never exactly lashed himself across the face with a vine because he wasn't stupid enough to test the idea. He hadn't witnessed the fight between she and her brother, and considering he had been hanging out alone he'd only chanced by the lake and happened to see her flailing about. It was pure luck, really. "Do you need to go to the Medical Wing?" he asked. The burns were pretty bad and her lungs might be a little fucked up from all the coughing, too. He'd go with her even if the wing was crowded with victims of the war. "Or the hospital?" he tacked on, considering the hospital in Maple Hollow was bound to be a little less crowded than the Academy's medical centre at the moment. Then he mentally facepalmed. "Oh, they can't cure burns, right..." He winced a little. This was so awkward. She wasn't going to hurt him or anything, right?

it wasn't something that she ever been expecting to do but now she could cross drowning off of her bucket list. there were reasons why she was always keen on dancing her way around bodies of water and avoided them at all costs. it was always grim to think back onto the the summer she had spent at her grandparents when she was maybe seven years old. ace had been forced to come along even though he had protested by throwing a fit and toppling everything in his bedroom over. shea hadn't been allowed to accompany them, her parents had always been too strict to let her go too far out of their sight. asha was grateful that even let her go over to their house for the extended periods of time that shea insisted. they had a lake house, half of the house was actually suspended on the water and made asha shake with fear whenever she got too closer to house of the lake that rested over the edge of the lake. she had managed to infuriate ace one day, it was a conflict that had all started over who would be allowed to sleep with the puppy that their grandparents had newly bought. it was all resolved by ace restraining her sister and walking into the lake with her. he kept her head securely under the water until their grandfather came racing out of the house and tore ace off of asha. it was a traumatizing incident for asha, because of it she would never look at water as tiny as puddle the same way again. it was only one of the things that ace managed to ruin for her.
her chest was aching now, a dull feeling that was lodged in the center of her chest while a scathing burning sensation pricked at her skin. each breath that she inhaled caused her agony then she had to let out a ragged breath every time she exhaled. asha lifted a shaky hand to try and grasp at her chest, her mind still hadn't fully registered that her arms and chest were seriously burned thanks to her brother. she bit down on her lip fiercely, enough pressure was placed on her bottom lip that blood was drawn and two crimson circles dotted on her lip. asha laid herself back out on her back, she delicately placed her arms on her stomach with her skin rested intact touching the damp fabric of her dress. the person beside her softly spoke out, it sounded like he was talking out of relief because she sputtered out a breath and uttered a raw cry. "thank fucking god is right..." asha slowly said, her words were slightly slurred because breathing hurt and her voice was thick with tears. somewhere deep down she figured that it would be appropriate if she thanked the stranger for fishing her out of the lake and taking her onto the shore. she groaned at the thought of having to give appreciation to someone, even if they had been selfless enough to throw themselves into the life and save her from the fate of drowning. maybe when she felt more collected she would give it a try to say thank you to the guy, who she still hadn't been able to match a face to.
her tears were making her feel extremely vulnerable, it had been years since she had even shed a tear. ironically the last time that she had sobbed was because ace had gone into her room and terrorized everything in it. he had even gone as far as too slash through all of the pieces of clothing that were hung up in her wardrobe. given this whole situation was much more dramatic but again ace proved to be the center of her pain and agony. asha didn't want to have to deal with the stranger who was looming over her but a tiny part of her was thankful that they were still lingering by her side. she wasn't sure about her chest, it was still a challenge to take a shallow breath and talking left her feeling winded. her burns were the more crucial injury though, quickly the were beginning to blister and the pain that bubbled on her skin made her want to claw at her skin until she had skinned ripped off. the stranger pressed on about her burns, claiming that he hadn't seen them. her initial reaction would be to instantly snap at him, her reddened skin should have been a sight that could be easily spotted against the paleness of her skin. her words gurgled in her mouth and she decided against her barrage of words. she settled for a reply that seemed more kind, in asha's mind at least. "you were occupied with my saving my life, i understand. you can't ignore the redness of my skin now though, i'm sure that it's blistering by now too." she was still gruffly speaking but an honest attempt to keep her rage tamed could be detected.
the hesitation in his voice tipped asha off to who her savior was, no one that she would have ever expected to spare some kindness her way. she had never done anything civil towards him, never had she even spoken to him before without ever having malicious intentions. asha let out a low groan, she was shaking furiously when she finally raised herself to sit up. blinking tears away she cleared her vision enough to peer over at him. his anxiousness was rolling off of him, he was acting politely towards her but he still believed that somehow she would mange to throw herself at him. "i'm not going to tear your head off, you sort of just saved my life. it would be low of me to kick your ass or something when you just fished me out of the lake..." asha murmured, choking out the words because she couldn't believe that she had spoken them. absently she went to run at her arms then cried out again when she was greeted with a prickly pain. "i didn't do this," asha scowled. "my fucking brother did, then i stumbled back into the lake and he ran off like a coward." her temper flared for a moment then it was immediately doused by a fresh flow of tears pouring from her eyes. a shaky breath was released and she desperately looked over at ashton, panic and fear were easily spotted. "don't take me to the medical wing. just don't. but you've got to help me...please."

He could tell that Asha was going through a great deal of difficulty to avoid snapping at him, and her sparing him of harsh words earned a bit of respect from the Earth student. Most Fire kids--especially the ones with reputations like Asha had--would have had no qualms about absolutely attacking him verbally despite the fact that he'd just gone and jumped in a lake for them, literally. So even though her tone was rough around the edges, he was nevertheless glad that she didn't snipe him with it. "Yeah," Ashton acknowledged when she mentioned the red and blistering skin, unable to deny that. He could tell that any attempt to tell her that 'it'll get better' would be lost on this temperamental female, so he wasn't going to waste his breath about it. Besides, most people hated any sort of pity and Asha would probably reflect on that tenfold. He didn't want to be gutted and strung from a tree for being too nice, or anything. Asha was being oddly kind to him but he wasn't aware of how far this kindness was going to extend, nor was he willing to push his luck. He bet that it hurt a whole lot, though. At least it wasn't an ocean she'd fallen into. The sting of salt would have made the wounds feel like they were still on fire. He knew that because he'd accidentally went to the beach with his parents with an open wound on his leg. He'd had to bite his tongue to keep from screaming when the salt had gotten into it. Never again. Never. Again.
She unexpectedly reassured him that he had nothing to worry about from her, something which Ashton hadn't really assumed would happen. Were Fire students normally like this when you actually tried treating them nicely? Ashton had really only known them to be bullies and the instigators of fights that, at least against him, they usually won. He'd never known one to be friendly before. Still, Ash was the type to believe and accept the best in people no matter who they were and what they had done to him in the past. Perhaps a little naive, but he was a good person at heart. "Yeah, I guess you're right," he admitted. It would have been low of her to attack when when he'd just saved her, he supposed. But he hadn't done it to get any sort of gain from it. Hell, he hadn't even realised it was Asha who was drowning when he'd jumped in after her. "But that's not why I helped you." He just wanted to make sure she knew it wasn't because she was a bitch to him and he wanted her to lay off. Would he still have been as eager to jump in and become her saviour if he'd noticed whom he was rescuing? Yes, sadly. Ash had no qualms with anyone deep enough that he wanted them dead.
Apparently it had been her own twin brother that had attacked her, and that horrified Ashton. He'd disliked his younger sibling a bit at first because Cam stole all of the attention from Mommy and Daddy, but he'd never have wished ill will on him even in the boiling point of their sibling rivalry. Then again, Asha and Ace were infamous as the quarrelling siblings of the Academy. Alexandre and Lucas were pretty bad, but he doubted they'd try to kill one another. Was it on purpose? he wondered, but decided not to ask. Know your limits with her. He didn't want to spark any sort of offence by bringing up touchy subjects like her asshole of a sibling. "He ran away and just left you to drown? That's terrible!" He couldn't help the exclamation of horror. What a sibling rivalry it must have been if you could abandon your own twin sister to die. He found himself harbouring an intense dislike toward Ace--he barely knew the guy--and this was new for him, he usually didn't resent people. But there was a line you just didn't cross and for Ashton he'd crossed it. He may not have been too fond of Asha seeing as she'd beat the shit out of him several times, but no one deserved the treatment that her brother had given her.
Ashton didn't judge Asha at all for the tears--barely allowed himself to notice that she was crying. He acknowledged it of course--he wasn't that oblivious--but he didn't call attention to it out of respect for her pride. Usually it was guys that got all irritated when their emotions got out of hand, but he had a feeling that Asha was very toughened and proud-hearted, so he'd keep a distance on the whole emotional thing. She asked him not to take her to the medical wing, and he nodded hesitantly in confirmation that he would respect this as well. He thought that she should probably get treatment for the burns, but he wasn't going to force someone into something they did not want to do. It wouldn't be fair to Asha and he knew that if he was in the same position he wouldn't want anyone forcing him, either. "Of course I'll help," he said without hesitation, further proving how selfless he was. "What do you need? Anything I can give, I will."

asha woods undoubtedly the big bad bitch at the academy. no one would even try to argue against that, it was well known even if asha didn't particularly flaunt the title around. she had the biggest mouth, her words came out with the most sting, and she didn't have any pretenses for how her actions would have an affect on the people that she was surrounded by. asha was inconsiderate, harsh, and to sweeten the deal a little more then roughly violent. just because she was rough on the outside didn't mean that if someone dug deep enough all they would discover was tar and a heart that been rotted since the day of her birth. on average she was just a person that everyone tended to avoid, the fire students and the thunder students were the exception. though on some of her more brighter days she had found herself befriending a student who was affiliated with the wind and in some cases she found that she didn't mind be being paired with an earth student. asha was really on rude and snappy because of the reactions that it pulled out of other people and the fact that being menacing came to her much more easily then being demure and meek did. kindness was something that she had to work towards, an honest effort that left her feeling weakened but someone down deep she reaped a small sort of satisfaction from it. hell, she had a soul? in times of peril the most hidden bits of information could be unveiled about one's self. asha had just discovered that the heart inside of her chest actually did beat.
she had to inhale sharply, a stifling pain overtook her chest when she attempted to exhale a gasping breath. a pathetic cough came from her and wouldn't stop harassing her until more lake water was spit up from her lungs. "i fucking hate water..." asha grumbled, using her palm to wipe the dribbling water from her chin. "ace knew that i couldn't swim, damn bastard," she continued to lowly talk, more to herself than ashton but she wasn't going to extensive efforts to conceal her words from the earth elemental. after a few experimental breaths she found that it felt like a heavy weight had been lifted from her chest, it was now much more easier for her to breathe without feeling like it might be her last staggering breath. her clouded brown eyes flicked over to ashton, he was lingering a few feet away from her but his eyes seemed to be concernedly drawn to her. asha felt that she actually did appreciate his insistence to watch over even though he had all ready pulled her out of the lake and heard her gasp for air. a few more breaths were taken before she pinned him with a piercing stare and tried to gasp something out for him. "thank you..." the words came out choppy and quickly spoken, asha wasn't one to hand out thanks like they could be compared to compliments. for ashton to have those words spoken to him from asha was something that he should be touched to hear. asha woods had just shown him gratitude for saving her life.
the disputes that occurred between asha and ace woods had grown to be infamously known around the academy. because of their vehement feelings towards each other the office had been notified that the woods twins would never be able to placed in the same class, only after an incident in their freshmen year had transpired. their whole schedule had been clear of each other, both had been relieved that the sibling rivalry sparked between them wouldn't hinder them from their work. the last class of the day, power control, was the one class that destroyed the security they had over the thought that they would be able to focus solely on their school assignments. the teacher brought them out on the grounds and requested that the students show what level of discipline they had over their abilities. what it boiled down to was ace and avery pushing at each other until sheer determination caused them both to char a large patch of grass out on the grounds. ashton seemed truly agonized over the bleak truth about how cowardly her bother actually was under his formidable appearance. she continued to peer over at him, unsure of how to take him in but ultimately deciding that her usual snippy attitude wouldn't be necessary. "you say that like it should be something that is surprising. he's the reason why i can't swim and water terrifies me. when were seven he tried to drown me," asha drily explained, even the thought of the dismaying experience managed to cause her to give a violent shiver. "when he realized just how badly he burned me he turned and ran. i could have died and he would have been the one to blame."
the light conversation had kept the pain and agony at bay momentarily, dwelling on the subject of ace had cancelled out the hot, searing bubbling on her skin. ashton had grown silent and without anything for asha to respond to she found that words wouldn't come to her. asha's face was streaked with tears that had been pushed out of her from nothing more than pure discomfort that the burns were causing. a strangled cry formed in her throat and passed through lips, she bit down her lip to try and hold back any other screams or yells that wanted to surface. ashton was still peering over towards her and it made her antsy knowing that he could clearly catch sight of tears. asha had to remind herself that anyone else had been placed in the same position their reaction would likely be ten times worse than her own. her arms were splayed out helplessly before her, the pain coursed through them and it was inconceivable to think that she would be able to draw any use out of them. "i'm not sure. i don't know. it just hurts..." asha blubbed out, trying to make a choice on how ashton should help her and exactly how they should execute his helpfulness. she licked absently at her lips, making a displeased face when the metallic taste of blood flooded her taste buds. asha tried to focus on how he could prove useful but now obvious ideas came to her mind. "just don't leave me...i don't think i can walk..." was the only thing that she could choke out before a swell of tears prevented her from saying much more.

Post by ASHTON CAMDEN RALEIGH on Jul 15, 2011 9:39:29 GMT -5
Ashton could definitely swim, and the Earth student had certainly enjoyed the frequent trips his family took down to the shores of British Columbia in the summer. He loved to build sandcastles with his little brother, loved to try his hand at surfing and fail horribly, loved to let the waves crash around him, soaking him as he laughed. But he could most indefinitely, especially in this very moment, understand why Asha Woods would say that she hated it. If you nearly drowned you certainly weren't going to be hauled out of your lake professing love for the very liquid that had almost taken your life. Ashton appeared distressed as the girl revealed that her brother was well aware that she couldn't swim, and yet he'd gone and left her behind to drown regardless. How were these two even twins?! When he read about twins or watched movies they were always closer than close, finishing each others sentences and possessing a perceptiveness for the other that no one else could understand. He knew that real life was different and all, but was it really so different that twins could be driven to murder? "Why wasn't there anyone else around? The grounds are usually full of people..." He didn't want to consider a seed that planted itself in the back of his mind--what if people had noticed, and they'd just ignored the drowning girl because it was Asha and she wasn't exactly the most well-liked girl amongst the student body? The thought made him feel a bit sick. Surely people wouldn't go that far... right?
Her own brother did, Ashton reminded himself, still trying to wrap his mind around that whole situation. It was hard for him to believe that a sibling hated their own flesh and blood that much, but he was hearing and seeing the proof with his own eyes and ears so it wasn't like he could go into some sort of denial. Asha thanked him, surprising the Earth boy for a moment. He didn't think she was capable of owning up to any feelings of gratitude, and he certainly hadn't expected any thanks even though he'd risked his own neck to save hers. Still, the gesture was appreciated and he smiled a little. "Of course," he said, dipping his head slightly. She might have attacked him in the past but Ashton wasn't like that. "I couldn't just let you drown, no matter what your brother's opinions on that matter are." It was a little sad that an Earth student whom Asha had actively bullied before had been more concerned in saving her life than her own twin. What sort of things had she done to Ace to deserve being left for dead? Nothing, he decided, the tone of his thoughts almost bordering on fierce. This was surprising--Ashton never got like that. There's nothing you can do to deserve that. Unless you were a serial killer or something, which Ash seriously doubted she was. Serial killers ended up in jail, right? Ashton still had a bit of naivete that let him believe there wasn't active evil in the student body. Not true evil. Badness, maybe, but never evil.
Green eyes widened with shock and horror when Asha revealed that it wasn't even the first time that Ace had nearly been responsible for her death. And the last time it had been on purpose, when they were only seven?! "Didn't your parents do something?" he asked, appalled by the thought of Ace trying to drown her. Hell, he'd stolen a single toy from his brother once and his father had not only threatening to take away all of his toys, but had grounded him for a week and taken away dessert privileges after dinner. What the hell did you do when one of your kids tried to kill the other one? If he can try to kill Asha, can he hurt others like that too? Now there was a scary thought. Ashton had had trouble with her brother as well (though a little less than with her) but he'd never actually assumed the guy was capable of taking another human life. Ashton always gave you the benefit of the doubt, and the only way you could make him believe you as a bad person was if you acted badly toward him. This was why he'd been so quick to side with Nell in the war, witness or no witness on the part of the Thunder element. She'd been nothing but kind to him. At the same time, Asha had been nothing but a bitch to him--until now--so it was rather shocking that he found himself getting along with her... or at least being civil with her, at any rate. And she was being nice. Now that was strange.
Indeed, most with such injuries would have been screaming and bawling their eyes out, if they hadn't passed out from such unbearable pain. He could tell just by looking at the burns that they hurt pretty bad and almost drowning on top of that could not have been very pleasant. Really, for her situation she was being remarkably brave and if anyone had asked him he wouldn't have batted a lash at the fact that there were silent tears pushing their way from her lids. "Okay," he agreed when she said that she didn't want him to leave. Apparently she wasn't confident in her ability to walk, and when someone so stubborn admitted defeat like that, your best bet was to just believe them. "I'll stay as long as you want." He wondered what they should do eventually, whether she should try and get up, suck up her pride and go to the medical wing, call her parents...? He didn't know Asha at all and so he wasn't aware of how she usually dealt with her injuries. "What are you going to do about your brother?" he worried, actually finding himself with a high level of resentment toward Ace Woods.

she had almost drowned right in the lake that was placed only a short walk away from the doors of the academy. a sprinkle of students should have been placed about the grounds, that was what usually happened on occasion. groups would form and each would wander off to go and do as they pleased with the allotted free time they were graced with. her mind jogged back to the stroll that she and shea had been on, she had been too immersed in their own conversation to gaze around and take in what was happening in the surrounding area. ace had been the only person that she had seen on the grounds, or the only person that had caught her attention because he had hollered out her name as soon as he caught sight of her. she listened to ashton idly wonder out loud why anyone else hadn't noticed her frantically moving arms over the surface of the lake or heard her hoarse yells. asha would have given a shrug of her shoulders in response if her skin wasn't searing with hotness and bubbling until it felt like she could peel it directly off. "maybe someone was watching but they decided that it was time for the big bad bitch to get a taste of her own medicine," asha sharply said, her words reflecting no hurt or shame that should have been felt in her tone. "it's something that i'm not too surprised about, you look like you might fall over from shock though, pussy," asha directed her words to him, nothing more then slight bitterness coloring her tone.
she was almost touched by the way that ashton seemed to be reacting to the whole story that had unfolded before him. mulling over her own thoughts for a moment she told herself that sympathy and understanding were some of the key things that the earth elementals had to pride themselves on. however she wasn't sure that any other earth student she had tortured or tormented in past encounters would have agreed with her and stuck around after she practically pleaded them to stay by her side. her eyes were trained on him, basically boring into him to try and push past the surface of him that only showed concern and respect. asha couldn't possibly imagine how anyone would have a kind enough soul to remain with her after she had acted so rudely towards him. "i can't believe that i just thanked you. i didn't even say thank you to my grandfather after he saved me from drowning. i only screamed in his face because he almost let me die," asha reminisced, some sort of twisted smile slipping onto her face while her eyes grew foggy with remembrance. her explosive ways always left her avoiding simple manners, it was something rare when asha would look at you and mutter a simple thank you. april scolded her constantly for her lack of lady-like etiquette. "you care more about me than my own brother," asha snorted, coughing more water up and choking slightly.
the encounter at their grandparents lake house was now freshly embedded in her mind, it was sparking more rage then feelings of distraught or something of the like. asha could clearly recall how it felt to have the water rushing into her lungs as she tried to scream for her brother to stop. she had flailed her arms and legs frantically until they grew tired from the effort and she resorted to going limp in her brother's arms. her grandfather had torn ace off of her with an unrelenting grip and then pulled her from the water to cradle her into his arms. anger lit up her eyes and she let out a yelp of surprise when she a flame lick over the surface of the water and then swiftly vanish. a shaky breath was inhaled and she found that the random show of her powers had stolen what little bit of strength she had managed to maintain. she could no longer support her own weight and let out a rough grunt when she fell back rest on the shore, she was going to have to be content with being sprawled out on her back. ashton pressed on about the issue at the lake house and asha grew silent for a moment before finally answering. "my parents don't know about the lake incident. it happened at my grandparent's lake house over the summer. ace threw a fit when my grandfather threatened to tell my parents and after destroying my grandmother's fine china my grandfather agreed to keep quiet," asha sighed, her face screwed up with the obvious distaste she had for the choice that had been made.
she had let out a sigh of relief when it seemed the pain had ebbed for a few moments. the burns almost felt like nothing more than a thousand pins pricking at her skin and her chest had been alleviated of all the pressure bottled up inside of it. asha thought she could try and coax herself to sit up now, the anguish wasn't heckling her and it made sitting up seem much more achievable. abruptly her chest felt like it had a blazing fire set upon that roared into an ominous size and danced over to her arms. her body began to tremor due to the unexpected agony while a raw cry came from deep within in. "holy...hell..." asha sputtered out, raising her quivering arms to try and grasp at them. the pain was a hot, searing feeling that had completely numbed her chest and arms. "i don't think that i can focus on my brother right now. the only thing i really have a hold on is how fucking bad this burns hurt..." asha murmured, her voice thick with tears and her vision out of focus because a new batch of tears had been summoned. she was continuing to claw at her arms and chest frantically for lack of not knowing what else she should do. her sobs grew more louder and gasping, the pain throttling into an even higher intensity. "do something! just do something! this fucking pain..." asha moaned through her tears.
ashton didn't react quick enough, he didn't come to stand by her side or hoist her up from the ground. another strangled cry came from her, it sounded like something close to a wounded wolf who had been left to lick its wounds. the pain that coursed through her veins was immeasurable, nothing else that she had ever experienced before could be compared to the agony. asha wasn't in tune with her mind and the command she sent to her feet to move didn't register to her properly. she was giving out hoarse hollers as she flailed around, her arms weren't of use to her so flailing was what she had to resort to. "my...fucking...lord!" asha was screaming at the top of her lungs, her voice was raspy and yelling at the top of her lungs wasn't exactly the most productive choice. productive wasn't the top priority on her mind, she wanted to soothe the burns that were itching at her skin and driving her to insanity. she was on her feet, stumbling unsteadily. being on her feet was something that she didn't think was possible, asha would have thought it astounding if she wasn't preoccupied with having her screams rack her thoughts raw. her hands were still clawing frantically at her body and she was bumbling around like coordination was something that she had never known. her throat was flaming but she still had enough left in her to give out another cry as she plummeted into the shallow water of the lake.
