Nell pushed away her tray with a satisfied sigh. Life was good. At least, in her eyes. She was sitting with a few of her Earth friends, talking about the tragic weather while other students looked on with amusement at the hippies lamenting the snow. ”It’ll get better soon, it’s not like we’re in the Antart—hic.” The table laughed with her, calling out suggestions for what to do, but the hiccups kept interrupting her laughter. They came in quick succession, causing ridiculous squeaks. Nell stood from the table to dispose of her tray, chuckling—which was interrupted by more hiccups, which made her laugh even more. But then it hurt her stomach, which wasn’t good after having a full meal. It’s a health condition, right? Why not ask the nurse for help? After saying goodbye and throwing away her things, Nell went off to the medical wing. She didn’t really like clinical places, they reminded her of the first and last time she went to the hospital.
Before approaching the nurse, she tried holding her breath. It didn’t work, and so as she went up to the desk she exhaled into a hiccup. The nurse raised her eyebrows and asked if she could help Nell. “I…” Hic. ”The thing is…” Hic. Hastily, she asked, “What can I do about thi-hic?” Nell let out a frustrated groan…of course interrupted by a hiccup. ”Nothing, honey, you can’t stop your diaphragm from contracting.” The nurse sounded sympathetic, and Nell nodded. Of course. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to try her damndest to get rid of them. Bidding the kindly nurse a goodbye, she left the medical wing and walked down the hallway, fist on her chest as she continued to let out squeaks.
Eventually, she came upon an empty hallway. An idea came to her, something she heard one of her friends call out when she was standing from the table. Stepping up to the wall, she made sure to glance both ways down the hall again to make sure no one was around. Nell put bent over and put her hands on the ground, then pushed her body up so that her back was against the wall. She could do a handstand without it, but she didn’t know how long it would take for these hiccups to go away.

Alexander had been walking down the hall Ipod in his pocket headphones in his ear drumsticks in hand. He had been listening to the song called Black betty. He had been walking down the hall when he started knocking on the walls with his drumsticks playing along with the song. He didnt see anyone in the hall at first glance which he hadnt really been paying attention anyway's when he turned the corner he countinued to play along with the song for somereason the song skipped but whatever. He recognized it instantly as just a plain old drum solo and started playing along when he noticed someone else in the hallway for some reason doing a handstand Alexander went on to finish his drum solo. When he finished he was positive that she had heard him but was unsure wether or not she actually looked up at him. He unplugged his headphones as Livin on a prayer came on and said "Hi im alexander." He said calmly "If i may ask why are you doing a handstand?" He had a sudden urge to do a handstand now next to her he always liked doing things like that without a real reason. He just always found it funnier that two people were just sitting there acting like mimes than just one person acting like a mime maybe it was just him or maybe not he didnt know and he didnt really care enough to ask.

As she felt the blood rushing into her cranium and her shirt was falling down over her midriff, revealing her lovely pink scar that was healing wrong because of how many times she opened a few stitches, she did not worry about anyone coming across this scene. ….until they did. A boy with headphones and drumsticks approached, and she blinked at him for a few moments. He must have thought her a freak, but she didn’t mind that.
".....I can explain." Nell hiccuped again and groaned as she flopped over onto the floor. On her back, she looked up at the Alexander kid who spoke so calmly to her—he had to be a couple years younger than her, maybe more. Freshman, perhaps? "My name is Nell, and I—“ She was interrupted by a squeak. "And I have the hiccups. Excuse me." Nell ruffled the side of her hair as she laughed lightly. It was embarrassing holding a conversation while being constantly interrupted by hiccupping.
She picked herself up off the floor and brushed off invisible dust from her jeans, turning her gaze up to him and smiling. "I was told doing a handstand would get rid of them, but..." When she paused, another hiccup came through. Nell sighed and raised an eyebrow. "Any suggestions? The nurse says there’s nothing I can do—hic—but I think there has to be something I can do." She leaned against the wall, arms crossed as she thought about this, her shoulders hitching lightly with each hiccup. Usually they didn’t last too long. This was just agonizing!

"No explanation needed. He said rather quietly because he did actually want to hear the explanation. "Oh the dreaded hiccups even worse than having a fever." He said this he found this to be quite true in his opinion. When nell asked him for any suggestions he sat down for a second to think. "Well if i had any water bottles i would give one to you to drink that always used to work for me but then again, Maybe thats just because of my element." He was cautious of saying the last part it had already gotten him burnt once so whose to say it couldnt get him attacked again? "You didnt have to stop doing a handstand because of me, It doesnt bother me if you do one." He knew why she had stopped doing her handstand most likely because she didnt want to look stupid, but that didnt bother Alexander he actually thought it looked fun.

Nell nodded at his words. Hiccups were definitely not fun. And as she thought this, it seemed as if said hiccups wanted to spite her, and choked her up before she could even respond. ”Tell me—hic—about it.” She winced as she said this, inclining an eyebrow as an apologetic look to Alex. She watched him sit to think, wondering if there could be any remedies for something so mysterious and elusive as the hiccup. When she was little, her sister would try to scare them away, but there was only so much a sickly, three-foot-tall girl could do to scare her “elder” sister. Nell had always been the older one, because she was the only one who seemed to give a damn anymore—she had to play the adult.
”Water bottles, hmm?” Nell tapped her chin in thought. Then, she caught Alex’s words about his element and grinned. ”Water student?” She held out her hand for him to shake by way of formal introduction. ”Earth senior, at your service.” He didn’t have to worry about hazing from her. She found herself defending a lot of innocent freshmen, careful around fire students—if she needed to approach one, she did it with others. Though usually Thunder students backed off because of her element. ”Eh, the handstand wasn’t working—hic—anyway. See?” She laughed a bit. Yeah, these hiccups didn’t look like they were going to relent any time soon.
Nell then said, ”How about we go to the mess hall to get some water? I can also show you just how awesome at handstands I am.” She winked when she said this, and pushed off from the wall, stepping ahead down the hallway. Then, she moved into a handstand and started walking, saying, ”I could be a circus sideshow or something,” Nell joked as she flipped over and back into a stand position, quite far away from Alex now. ”C’mon!” she encouraged, waving her hand.

Alexander knew that the hiccups were one of the most annoying minor things you could have. "Yep first year water student." He said shaking nell's hand. "It didnt seem like the handstand was working but if you wanted you could have still kept going." He grinned when she said the comment about how she could show him how awesome of a handstand she could do. He winced at the comment about her being able to be in a circus sideshow or something, because of his coulrophobia and talking about the circus reminded him of clowns. When alexander saw her get into a handstand he decided to do the same he tried walking on his hands and fell onto his face he waited a second without reaction then started laughing at himself. "Guess handstands just arent my thing." He said while taking a breath. He stood up and started walking towards Nell. He started jogging towards nell. "So did you go ask the nurse about your hiccups or something around those lines?" He thought that the nurse would know something about Nell's situation i mean they were only hiccups.

“Ah freshie,” Nell said, grinning widely. ”How have the upperclassmen been treating ya?” She asked that with actual concern, considering how good of a welcome wagon her fellow upperclassmen could be. ”Not too much hazing, I hope.” The Academy should really be doing something about it, especially since the students here were freaking superhuman. Bullying is bad enough when you just have to deal with hands and fists (or at least she assumed, considering she’d never been to school before), but when you throw fire balls and lightning into the mix, it’s made that much more worse. She hasn’t been a victim yet, at least not with outward threats. There was that Thunder girl, but she hadn’t done much damage.
When she looked to face Alex, she noticed a strange expression cross his face. Slightly distressed, she asked, ”Did I say something wrong? I’m sorry!” Maybe this guy was for animal rights (though circuses nowadays aren’t too bad), or he didn’t like large tents or something. Clowns didn’t cross her mind simply because she never really saw one before. Heard of them, but actually seeing their painted faces and juggling acts—why, she thought they could be quite entertaining! Taken from her thoughts when Alex attempted his own handstand, she took a few steps toward him when he faceplanted. ”You all right, Alex?” Nell asked in concern, but when she heard him laughing, she couldn’t help giggling herself, then bursting out into full-blown laughter. ”No, I guess not. But with enough discipline you could be walking around on your hands all the time.”
He jogged to catch up with her, asking about the nurse. ”I actually did, but she said there’s nothing you can do since it’s your organs contracting. Pretty picture, right?” Imagining the inner-workings was kind of weird, and she hiccupped then, trying not to picture what it must have looked like inside. Sure, she’d hit the biology books hard when she was little, but thinking of your organs convulsing inside of you was more than a little squicky. Nell led them to the mess hall and pushed through the crowds to go wait in line. She had her wallet in her back pocket, sporting about five dollars. She was flat broke most of the time, there was only so much a bartender could earn. ”So how you liking the Academy so far?” she asked amiably.

"Well you can probably guess how the fires have been treating me and other then them havent really met any of the other elements, your actually the first earth element i've met. He said it was kind of obvious that they wouldnt like water freshmen but he didnt expect to be treated any other way. "Nope not much hazing. He had only been actually attacked once so far and a guy named joshua was nice enough to heal it after scaring him a few times. Nell must have noticed his expression when she mentioned the circus. "No you didnt say anything wrong at all, just kind of bad memory. He was extremly afraid of clowns so even thinking about them was enough to make him wince. "Yep im alright. Pretty fun actually." He said after he stopped laughing. When they got into line she asked how he liked the academy. "Its alright really big though, I havent actually met many people though.

”Oh yes, our lovely fire students.” Nell sighed and scratched her head. ”They’re not the best welcome wagon.” She tried not to judge based on groups, but here it was pretty much a requirement. You’re placed into nice little alliances and have people on the opposing sides hating your guts for it. Nell loved the other Earth students, but she didn’t want any more enemies. She didn’t need anyone else trying to bring her down, it was enough dealing with her own relative. ”Well that’s good,” she said about the hazing. At least he wasn’t getting pushed around too much. Nell stifled another hiccup with her hand.
Nell nodded slowly as he explained that it was a bad memory. She could understand that, and so left it be. Instead, she laughed at what he said, replying with a slight hiccup, ”Ain’t it, though?” Handstands were one thing other children learned that she had that made her think she wasn’t so completely out of touch. She stopped to pay for the bottle of water, leaving the line and listening to what Alex was saying before taking a swig of it. ”If by really big you mean a looming monstrosity, then yes,” she jested. ”Really though, it’s a good place to be. Once you meet more people, it’ll get even better. Just try to avoid the rampaging Fire kids, and you’ll be a-okay.”
She twisted off the cap of the water and held it up a bit saying, ”Here’s to getting rid of hiccups!” She downed over half the bottle in a matter of seconds, having actually been rather thirsty, and waiting a few moments afterward. Nell expected to hiccup, so it felt weird when she didn’t. Like getting off a boat and still feeling the rolling of the sea beneath your feet. She looked at him with a grin. ”Alex, you’re amazing!” True, it was a simple remedy, but now she was free of the despicable diaphragm contractions (ew, very squicky). Taking a few more gulps, she asked after, ”So, have you explored the castle yet? I’m sure there’s a lot to discover.”

"Ya but hopefully they dont send another welcoming party." He hadnt actually bothered wondering if he should worry about them he was told they were really close together as an element. "Yes it is" He replied to her question about handstands. Alex followed her out of the line as he didnt want anything nor had he had his money on him. "Aw so I shouldnt try to be the main target for the fires? But its sooooo fun!" He said jokishly hopefully she understood it and wasnt offended or anything by it. "Lets hope the water helps." Alex chuckled to himself for one thing he was finally going to figure out if the water only worked for him because he was water elemental or wether it worked for others also. He was suprised that Nell downed just about half the water in a matter of seconds he waited to see the result. When nell said he was amazing he grinned it wasnt really that much of a remedy it was simple as taking a big drink of water when you had the hiccups anyone could have done it without knowing about it. "Thats anything but amazing, its such an easy thing to discover." He was still happy that it worked for her being she had to buy the bottle of water. "nope not yet i plan to explore it someday just when i have more control of my powers, Ill probably have a few bottles of water with me also just incase i have to use my powers." He said this actually planning to take water with him when he explored he would have to try to stay away from the dungeon though he heard thats where the fires stayed at least during this wether."

At his joke, she nudged him in the gut with her elbow and said, ”Of course, if you’re a masochist, I suggest wearing a shirt that says, ‘fresh meat for Fire students.” Then she winked at him. It was nearly impossible to offend Nell, so much so that she thought the person able to do it should be rewarded with a trophy. She really didn’t know what things could offend her. But she was sure it wasn’t this boy who gave her such a great suggestion.
He didn’t seem to believe it to be so great, stating that it was a simple thing to discover. ”I’m easily impressed.” She said this jokingly, her eyes glimmering, but in truth she really was. With so little experience in the real world, simple things like remedies to hiccups escaped her. ”Plus, you said it was because of your element. Maybe it was just luck that it helped my hiccups.” They might have been just ending anyway, and now she was left with this weird feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Nell had to laugh at the bringing bottles of water part. ”Well, you’ve got this,” she said, shaking whatever liquid was left in the bottle. ”How about a little exploring right now? Two people is better than one, so I’m sure no one will mess with us. Especially since I’m a senior.” She linked her arm through his, practically dragging him out of the mess hall and into the corridors to look for adventure. Nell looked at him, voice laced with a laugh as she asked, ”Any place you’re curious about? Barring the dungeons, of course.” Not only for the risk of meeting up with Fire students, but because she didn’t do well in enclosed spaces.

"Ill make sure to remember that i think i have a plain white tshirt back at the dorm." Alexander grinned depending on how much bigger he got he might just have to use that when he was in senior year or even better if he stayed here for college. That would be funny. Alexander was glad she wasnt offended and if she was she wasnt letting him know. "I never said it was because of my element i said it might have been, but still it worked didnt it?" When she said that he had what was left of her water bottle he knew something was up but decided it best to not ask and let her explain. "Uh sure we could explore right now i guess two people is better than one, Oh is the big bad earth senior going to beat them up?" He asked jokingly he didnt think she could do much to the fire students especially if they were seniors but the thunder's shouldnt bother them. Alexander looked at the bottle of water and said"Hmm with this much water ill be able to put some water in their nose!" He laughed that had always bothered him when he was younger when water got into his nose so he figured it might bother others too. "I would say the cells in the dungeon, if that wasnt where the fires were staying that sounds pretty cool to be honest but since theres no chance im going there, Lead on." said alex as he was pulled.

Nell snorted lightly when he spoke of the shirt. She found she enjoyed the company of Water students, anyone really. If there was one thing Nell hated the most it was feeling alone. When he spoke of the fact he had said it might have been because of his element, she blushed lightly and rubbed the back of her neck with her free hand. ”Touché,” she acknowledged with a nervous laugh. Things like this were what she should have known, what people have known for a while. Sometimes, her naiveté scared her.
Nell lifted her eyebrow at his teasing, and wrapped her arm around the back of his neck while rubbing her knuckles into his scalp, fisting the hand she held her water bottle in. ”What was that freshie?” She laughed as she said this, letting him go with a wicked smile. Everything she did was a friendly gesture, never meaning any harm. She only saved what little animosity she had for her family, and when it came to them her bitterness increased tenfold. They’re not here anymore, a voice in her head tried to convince herself, but she wasn’t so sure how long she could hide out. That fear was always there. ”Just know that I got your back,” Nell’s smile was genuine as it always is.
”Hey, there we go!” she said, eyes sparkling as she put the water bottle into his hand. In a falsely-serious voice she said, ”Use it wisely, young one.” It could probably work should anyone harass them, actually, so she had to compliment him on that. So the dungeons were cool? She frowned only slightly, but it still looked out-of-place on her usually cheerful face. She honestly couldn’t see how dungeons were cool, considering she spent her entire life in one of her mother’s creation. But that begged the question…where to go? They had an entire damn castle to explore, so she pulled Alex along, down hallways, until she inadvertently led them right to the dungeons in all their dark and creepy glory. ”My stupid sense of direction,” she said with a frustrated sigh. Leave it to Nell to lead them to the exact place she was trying to avoid.
The place was exceptionally warm, probably because of the Fire students lurking about. She felt her throat closing up and held a little tighter onto Alex’s arm. Calm down, Nell, everything is a-okay. …Not so much when she noticed a student strolling up to them like he owned the place, hands in his pockets. His eyes immediately went to Alex, who was clearly the younger of the two. ”What’s a little freshman doing down here?” His voice easily read bad intent, and as he drew closer, flames forming in his hand as he smiled, Nell whispered in Alex’s ear, ”Now would be a good time to use that water,” she said, very seriously. There was enough that it should work, and then they could find a way to get out of here.

"Hey! your lucky I'm not obsessed with my hair." Alexander said as he laughed while he received a noogie. He could only imagine what he would do if he was a person that was obsessed with his hair. He laughed at the thought he would never be like that if he did he might just have to shave himself. "Aww so comforting" He said jokingly although it was better than being alone if they ran into a fire student she wouldn't be able to do much. Alexander was surprised to say the least when Nell said that was a good idea and told him to use the water wisely, He had been joking he didn't even know if he would be able to get it out of the bottle with his power it might be just as effective for Nell to have the bottle of water. "Its alright i would have probably done the same thing if i was leading." Everything would be fine as long as, Ow Alex's thoughts were interrupted when Nell squeezed his arm harder. "Cmon lets go it doesnt seem like anyone has see-" Alex was wrong very wrong there was a student strolling up to them at this exact moment. Alex could only think to do one thing when the fire student asked what he was doing there, "I was just coming to see where i would be staying this year, I dont think taking my sister was a good idea though so i think we're just going to leave and ill come back alone later." Alexander said to the guy he wasn't sure if it would work but hopefully it would even if he came after Alex after he found out he lied to him he would handle it. "If i end up starting to count to three just run okay?" Alex whispered to Nell he wouldn't be able to control the water he could already tell he was too worried to even try. He would simply douse the fire with the water as best he could by tossing it straight out of the bottle at him then run, I really need to come up with better plans alex thought to himself.

She hadn’t taken Alex as a superficial guy obsessed with his hair, and she was glad she was right. It concerned her a bit when a boy was more concerned about his hair than she was. It’s rather strange, actually, but to each his own, she guessed. Alex joked back about her having his back, and though she shoved him a bit with a laugh, she was completely serious about it. Nell would be there for him should anything happen, though she just met him about five seconds ago. It’s the kind of person she was, the whole ‘no one gets left behind’ mentality.
Alex tried to reassure her about getting lost, but she barely registered the words as the claustrophobia began to work its way into her throat. ”Right…” she responded softly. But there wasn’t time to go back as Alex began to speak before the Fire student came up, hands ablaze. Alex was a freshman, his powers weaker than even hers. But if they were tricky enough… As he began to lie through his teeth, the Fire student obviously didn’t care. ”Since you’re new and all, I will take it upon myself to welcome you,” the student said in what could be considered a pleasant tone if it wasn’t for the malicious undertones. Hazing was the upperclassmen’s favorite sport, and she knew no matter what the two said he would attack.
Crap, crap, crappity crap. Nell’s thoughts were frantic as she looked at the fire, and so just as Alex finished what he was saying she saw the student’s hand move into a sweeping motion and cried out, ”Run, run, run, correr!” In her panic she slipped into Spanish, but she didn’t even realize it as she pulled Alex along, practically dragging him after her as she scurried through the darkness, trying to find a way out. The student was seemingly alone, so she believed he wouldn’t think it worth it to follow after them. Eventually, the emerged from a stairwell into a lit hallway, and Nell finally let go of his arm, panting heavily. ”That…was….too close.” She placed her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. Turning, she asked Alex, ”You okay? He didn’t burn you, did he?”
