DISTINGUISHING FEATURES mona's hair is the most noticeable thing about her, wild and frizzy. often it does not even look like she's brushed it in the morning, though if she spares the time to curl it, the results are incredible. she has her nose pierced, done without her mother's consent and after a lot of begging pearl to take her.
CLOTHING STYLE mona wears what she likes, without rhyme or reason. jeans and t-shirts, mostly, whatever strikes her fancy. sometimes she goes bohemian if it strikes her fancy, and a lot of her clothes come second hand from her eldest sister.

HISTORY
BIRTH-FIVE. mona had always liked to call her mother a baby-making factory, because her birth came shortly after her elder brother's. from the time she was a child, she'd been causing trouble. her eldest sister had always been put in charge of reigning her in, but pearl lost her temper more often than not with the young child running around and marking the walls with phallic symbols. as a child, she did not realize how unfortunate her family was, that they did not have a lot of money. despite this, queenie wanted a big family, and when mona was four, sibill came along. she was no longer the baby. she felt insecure and jealous when sibill got the attention, when she turned out to be the good child while mona was the one biting schoolyard children when they threatened to steal her lunch.
she'd always felt like the outcast.
EIGHT. brian was born at home, during a blizzard. it had been in the bathtub, and mona stepped forward with surprising control and sternness, helping her mother through the birth as if she had done it a million times before. their family became whole with this new addition to the family, and they welcomed little brian into the fold. the fold was a bunch of children picking on each other, hanging gi joes from trees, burning innocent wildlife, doing what they could to entertain themselves. the family became well-known in their neighborhood, they were the landry brood, running around and wreaking havoc. however, whenever anyone blamed their mother for poor parenting, they stood ready at her defense. their mother was the most important person in their lives.
ELEVEN. she didn't know what happened, and when she asked questions, she was waved away. she knew it was because she was too young, but mona believed she had a right to know where her father went. her mother told her that he was going back to his parents, but that left a lot of questions. once again, she felt the isolation from the family. jeremy tried to soothe her, but she was always icy and cold, even at such a young age.
TWELVE. middle school was met with a fierce mona. it was different than the years before, the kids knew more, they understood more of what their parents talked about. and so being made fun of for being poor, mona had to be picked up by her parents from the principal's office all too often. they lectured her, told her she shouldn't be picking fights, but she did what she believed was right. she was defending her family's integrity. people still talked, of course. "why do they have so many children? haven't they heard of condoms?" and mona knew exactly what those were, because these were the years when curiosity in all areas of life got the best of her.
FOURTEEN. it started with headaches. that was the first sign. queenie didn't want to go in for an mri, but pearl convinced her to go. they got the results back after the weekend, and it was exactly what they had feared. brain cancer. and so, when mona found out about her powers, she was conflicted on what to feel. she was so happy and guilty for feeling that way when her mother was dying.
she was shut out of secret conversations between queenie and pearl, eavesdropping behind doors to find out what was going on. she asked too many questions, asked if queenie would get chemo, if she was going to do anything, and there were no answers. nowadays, she's constantly fighting with her eldest sister, pearl's temper easily incited and mona being an irritable teenager.
the siblings are growing apart. she tries to talk to jeremy, hang out with him, worming her way into his group of friends and he's trying to shield her from them. he sees what she's turning out to be when she flashes coy smiles at one of his buddies, when he finds cigarette buds outside her bedroom window, and he wants to stop it. max is causing trouble himself, the jail kind of trouble. even the younger ones are losing control, and mona--despite her feeling like a ghost in the family--is doing her best to be responsible and mature. she cleans up after brian, she makes dinner every night, she stands up for her siblings when needed.
silently, she is terrified of her future. she knows her mother's not getting chemo, and that meant the children were at risk. pearl couldn't take care of them all, and mona can't take the silent countdown to queenie's demise.
FIFTEEN. when her mother passed away, it only went downhill. her behavior is more out of control than ever, and she has no care for a future. once driven and confident, she's going nowhere.
