Nell ran the two toy airplanes that were glued together under warm water, the impatient boys peeking over the counter at her as she did so. ”Is it fixed?” one of them asked. She cast them a smile and said, ”No, not yet, they’re starting to come apart though.” Luckily it wasn’t super glue or anything so she wouldn’t have to get very intense to try and seperated the fused toys. They came apart a few seconds later, and she shook the water off before grabbing paper towels to dry them off with. After, she dropped the toys into their outstretched hands and said, ”Now we know not to glue our toys, right?” They gave her a quick nod before going back over to the mat and used the time they had left to finish playing with their toys. She was about to go speak to Ms. Kustack when she heard, ”Miss Nelly!” It was her cue to help out with a lego fortress. Nell felt bad that she hadn’t played much with legos in her youth and she didn’t feel like a very helpful assistant in the matters of castle building. But the girl didn’t seem to mind, and when Ms. Kustack ended free time they had a flad at the top of a rather impressive castle, if Nell did say so herself.
She spent the rest of her day helping with fingerpainting, one of the activities Nell had helped the teacher plan, and by the end she was covered in a wide array of paints. She didn’t particularly mind, especially because she’d worn an apron and she had worn jeans. Nell was thankful that this daycare at least allowed jeans, because wearing nice pants around little kids was just asking for it. As usual, she stayed after late, speaking to Ms. Kustack for a few moments before the woman left. Nell focused on cleaning up the paints and wiping off the low tables that she had since learned to squat properly at. Unfortunately, she didn’t bring a change of clothes, but she didn’t have any other plans for that day even though she was going to see what Josh was up to. She used to bring a change of clothes most days to Blackjack, because the smell of booze wasn’t a very pleasant scent to carry around. Besides, working made her sweaty, especially now that she was chasing little kids around. She decided to at least slip off the sweater she had on for the tanktop underneath, considering it had been a busy day.
And she still had more work to do, cleaning off all the toys that the kids played with. The Lego castle had been demolished by one of the boys, and she was glad when Laura didn’t get upset about that, even though he didn’t ask permission. It was always astounding to her when children did something out of the ordinary, and that was a pleasant surprise. Nell didn’t mind doing what was basicaly grunt work in taking the Lysol wipes and going over the toy trucks and Barbies, soaking toys in hot water when she believed that it was necessary to clean it off. She saved those for last, piling them on the counter and putting the stopper in the sink as she filled it up with scalding hot water. It was situated in the back of the classroom, and as she had not yet locked up, the door was open.

Ashley headed down the hall of the daycare building. It was after hours so it was fairly empty. I hope I'm not too late Ash thought as she continued walking poking her head into windows of rooms as she went by but all doors were closed and the lights were off. Ash was considering giving up and turning back when she heard noises coming from the room at the end. She headed down and knocked on the door. It looked like the girl was cleaning up after the kids, washing toys and what not.
Hey, I hope I'm not bothering you but I have some questions." She said trying to sound as polite and responsible as possible. The girl seemed nice so Ash tried not to worry too much about getting yelled at. "Do you need any help? I'm actually here to ask about a job. She asked figuring it would make her look helpful. She took off her bag and rested it on a near by table seeing as it was really heavy. Ashley was worried she wouldn't be giving a chance because of her age so she brought everything needed to give her a better chance including pages of references from babysitting jobs as well as day cares and music lessons she had taught. It was really big and therefore weighing her down a bit.
Ash knew her age was going to be a problem but she had been doing this since she was 11. She didn't even need to be payed in honesty, anything she could do here would be one more thing in her already big folder. It would also give her something to do in her free time, possibly keep her out of trouble. "I can work, volunteer, clean, do music with the kids, read or anything you need help with at all." She was hoping she didn't sound desperate but she kind of was. If she couldn't get a job here she could always babysit more or see if there was a place anywhere that gave music lessons. Since day care was something she didn't have a huge amount of experience with it would be nice to work here but there was no reason to act desperate.

Nell wasn’t very startled when she heard the voice, as she wasn’t easily perturbed, so she merely looked up with a smile already on her face. Because honestly, it was rare when she wasn’t smiling. Even when she was feeling upset, she liked to make sure that other people were happy. She took in the sight of the girl, who didn't appear to be a parent or a child. Certainly a teenager. ”Oh, it’s no problem,” Nell said, her voice sincere as she brushed a strand of brown hair out of her matching eyes. A slight chill overcame her from the contact of her wet hand, but she still felt no desire to put her sweater back on. ”Come on in. I'm just finishing cleaning up” The lights were still on even though other classrooms had already been abandoned, but it wasn’t so late that the Earth girl would be forced to kick out this new arrival. Nell usually didn’t like forcing any of her work on others, but the girl had offered and she said that she was looking for a job. She looks a little young. She brushed off this thought for the time being as she said, ”Sure. You can help me dry off the toys, if you like. What kind of questions do you have?” They were pretty much finished their heated soak and she figured that since the girl had some questions, they could talk while working together. Nell took out a firetruck after saying as much, taking the paper towel out of the dispenser to dry them off as well as she could.
The girl was adorable, honestly, and it was probably the way she seemed to eager. Plus, Nell liked anyone younger than her. Well, she liked everyone in general until they gave her a reason not to like them. ”Sounds like you’re pretty experienced,” she said as she placed the firetruck on the counter. ”Unfortunately, I’m not the teacher so I can't be of much service. I’m Nell Shepherd, Ms. Kustack’s aide.” She wasn’t really the one to speak to when it came to getting a job, but she did like to help people out. A lot. It was part of the reason she’d been a good bartender before coming here—customer service was a forte. It was still strange to consider how different her last job was compared to where she worked now. She tilted her head as she put her hand back in the hot water, sifting around for another toy while considering the girl. “How old are you?” She appeared to be in her early teens, as far as Nell could tell. It was always hard to pinpoint ages, but it was generally easy to separate middle schoolers from high schoolers and the such.

Ashley mas more then relieved when the girl said that she could help clean. It would hopefully make talking less awkward. "Thanks" Ash said with a smile. She reached into the warm water pulling out a plastic doll and beginning to dry it. Ash had not had a single thing to drink in days to double check that she had the control to be working with children again. She would have to be at her best in order to even be considered to be aloud to help out. The girl here looked really nice, like she was born to do this. Ash was surprisingly calm and smiled when she reached in again to pull out a train engine. The girl Ash was drying toys with looked familiar, not in the sense that they were long lost friends but maybe passed by in the halls a few times. Even though her face struck Ash as familiar, a magic elemental academy hidden near town was not something she would be bringing up.
Ash looked back at her bag. "Ya, I've been doing this around 5 years now" She said trying to sound a modest as possible. The next things the girl said really brought Ashley down since there didn't seem to be a teacher in the area. She realized she may not go home with a definite answer. Never the less she tried to stay happy and make a good impression. "I'm Ashley Roberts, it's really nice to meat you. Do you happen to know where ms.Kustacks is right now?" As Ashley continued to dry toys she figured she could still ask some questions of her own while she was here since Nell had offered to help her. "I'm fifteen" She began trying to sound more mature. She had considered lying and saying she was seventeen but didn't want to risk coming off as a bad person. This was important to her. "Do you have any type of music time with the kids? I know I'm a little young to be working here but I could come in occasionally to do things like that. I'm not even really looking for money." She said only being half honest. It was true she wouldn't be upset if she wasn't paid but at the end of the day she was still Ash, still a fire, and still addicted to alcohol.

Nell, being the outgoing and friendly person she was, wouldn’t mind talking to the redhead, whatever the circumstances. After all, she couldn’t help but be curious about her. It was a natural thing for the Earth student. Plus, the girl really did look young, so it intrigued Nell as to why she had taken an interest in children. Usually teenagers couldn’t stand the little kiddies. At least, as far as she’d seen. She mostly had her friends and interactions with their younger siblings to go off of. However, she was familiar with the relationship between siblings—underneath the fighting and the hair-pulling and the name-calling, there’s love.
Pumping soap from the side of the sink, Nell arched an eyebrow at her companion. ”Babysitting?” That would make sense. Nell hadn’t babysat all that much, speaking honestly, but that coincided with the whole ‘haven’t been really living for too long’ deal. ”She left a little while ago.” She was slowly becoming pretty good friends with the older woman, but she still didn’t know too much about what the teacher did in her own free time. ”You can speak to her tomorrow, if you like.” Ms. Kustack may have been crabby sometimes, but she could deal with a classroom full of rowdy children, so she could certainly speak to Ashley about a job.
Nell tilted her head in consideration as she continued to go about her business. Ashley was definitely too young to work there. It would be hard for her to even find a job anywhere else, but there were some places that hired so young. ”Well, I suppose you could come in and play for the children,” she said, feeling much too soft to turn down this girl so quickly. ”I can’t make any promises, but maybe if you come in tomorrow I can talk to Ms. Kustack. I don’t think we’d be able to pay you, and we’d still have to do a background check, but if you still want to do it…” She shrugged her shoulders, signaling that even though her prospects weren’t too bright, there was a small chance that Ashley could still work around children. It would look good on college applications and all that. ”Of course, if you’d rather be paid, I don’t think that’s the best for you…” Her expression was honestly apologetic. It really did suck.

The younger girl nodded, babysitting was the back up plan if this didn't work out. "Yeah, I've been doing it since I've been legally old enough to." This was a lie she told to look more mature. technically the first time she really baby sat was a five year old when she was around ten and a half. She wasn't sure if that would make her look more experienced or less responsible so she decided against sharing. Ashley was upset now for two reasons. One was she wouldn't have her answer today and another being that she would need to stay sober for another night. She looked at it as a challenge. If you beat the booze monster you get to work with kids. "What time tomorrow would be good? She wanted to show initiative not only to Nell but to herself as well. She would come tomorrow no matter what it meant giving up.
Ash was confused by Nell's response to the music. She said it might be a good idea but how she worded it made her unsure. "Is that something the kids would be interested in?" She wanted to make sure that there was a point in coming tomorrow at all. "And like I said pay isn't that important to me, I can babysit. I just haven't been in the area long and was worried people won't know me and not consider leaving their kids with me. Maybe if I could do a few things around here the parents will know my name. I don't know it's just my thinking" Ash reached into the water and grabbed what felt like the last toy. She dried it and figured it may be a good idea to leave since she felt like she was only making a fool of herself but instead she asked, "Is there anything else you need help with while I'm here?" The words came out but she didn't regret them. There was no harm in staying unless something really angered her and she ended up melting one of the toys by accident. Nell seemed like an honestly good person though so she wasn't really worried.

Nell knew the legal age for babysitting to be thirteen, and Ashley had told her that she was only fifteen years old and had been babysitting for five years. Which meant that she was lying about the fact that she was legally babysitting. This wouldn’t have been too big a concern except for the fact that Ashley was looking to work there, and it’s strike number one to be lying to someone who was trying to help you out. So maybe the Earth student was being a little hypocritical—she lied about everything when she got her first job at Corrosion—but when someone was supposed to be working with kids, there was a lot more you have to be worried about. ”So you’ve been babysitting legally for five years,” Nell said, hoping the girl would understand what she was getting at. Nell would be a lot more merciful if Ashley owned up then. ”I’d say around seven in the morning before the kids come in.” Ms. Kustack was a morning person, besides, so it would be better to do that then. Even though Nell was having doubts since it was shifty to lie about something like that.
Nell nodded and said, ”Yeah, the kids like music. They’ve made their own maracas.” She nodded to a bin next to the windows that held their little arts and crafts projects. Kids definitely liked music, that was something she knew was common among kids. She and her sister had grown up in a rather musical household. ”Age is also an important matter,” Nell pointed out to the redhead when she mentioned parents knowing her name. ”Do you have a liscense from the Red Cross? That is something else that’s pretty necessary.” Babysitting liscenses were helpful, after you took classes. ”A CPR liscense, too.” The girl had her heart in the right place, that much was clear, but unfortunately society wouldn’t be so accepting. Nell wiped off her hands and said, ”You could wipe down the tables. There might be some paint left over. Wipes are over there.” Nell nodded to the table where she’d left them. It helped get work done quickly, so why not let Ashley help out?

Ash couldn't help but laugh at the girls question. "No, sorry I've been working with kids for five years, babysitting for three. Since I was around ten I've been helping friends with there baby sisters and brothers, I also kinder garden monitored at my elementary school." Ash dried off her hands and took out her phone to program am alarm leaving her enough time to get ready and head down here. After programing the time she nodded a thank you to Nell while putting her phone away and giving her, her full attention again. Sure she had been given some small jobs when she was younger like watching a girl while her mother ran out for milk or putting a baby to bed while there father prepared for a party in his basement. Even bigger things like watching a sleeping baby while there parents went out for dinner down the street counted in her mind. She hadn't truly started looking after kids for long periods of time until she was around 11 and a half. Where she had lived in Toronto Ontario the legal age was 12. She didn't want Nell to think she was ling so she explained "It was never anything big until I turned 12, just helping parents out while they ran errands down the street. She smiled at Nell hoping she believed her.
Ashley was relieved to hear that the kids liked music. "I can come in and play guitar, piano and sing with them too. I know all the best songs like twinkle twinkle little star and the wheels on the bus" Ashley laughed, she was completely serious, she knew a lot of children's songs in not only English but some in Japanese a few in Spanish and one or two in furbyish. Ash nodded at the comment about age and she went into her bag and pulled out a number of little cards that consisted of a babysitting course when she was 12, an up to date CPR license, proof of first aid training and an official but recently expired red cross card. She also had papers with proof of a police background check already done and completely up to date. "I use to do a lot of volunteer work with boy scout camps and girl scout sleepovers so this is all stuff I make sure that I have." Ash hoped she didn't look too over the top. The fire part of her kept telling her that she was acting venerable and shouldn't look so involved but every other part of her wanted this far too much. Ash handed the older girl the information and went to grab a cloth to help wipe down the tables.

Nell felt better when Ashley told her that she’d been working with kids for five years. ”Ah, that makes sense,” she said, glad that she didn’t have to worry about the girl. She seemed very kind. Well, anyone could handle kids must have been kind. Her friend had claimed that she’d never be able to work in a daycare cause she might end up throttling a child. Nell couldn’t really understand, but that was because she’s Nell, and her tolerence levels were very high. Even still, while Nell usually gave people the benefit of the doubt, she had to be extra careful because these were children she was dealing with. It was a good thing that she wasn’t in charge of seeing if Ashley could come in at any time. ”Are your parents around to give you any recommendations?” It woud be good to have her parents vouch for her and all that good stuff. Plus, for her age, it might also be a requirement. Nell had been hired at eighteen, so she didn’t know.
The Earth girl nodded when she said what she could play. ”I’m sure the kids would like that. I don’t think we have anyone coming in right now.” If she tried, she could be rather good at playing instruments, she thought. If she trained her voice, she could be good. It was something in her blood. However, she knew minimal piano and was interested in playing the sax. She’d always sung, not very well, but to put her sister back to sleep when she woke up in the middle of the night sweating, screaming. She’d also picked up opera airs from her mother, which she often found herself whispering under her breath when doing some form of work. ”Well, tomorrow morning, then,” Nell said with a smile as she re-adjusted her hair and made sure everything was straightened up on the desk. ”That’s when we’ll actually figure out if you can work or not. Your fate is in Ms. Kustack’s hand.” Her tone was dramatic, but it was obvious she was joking since that wasn’t literally the case. ”Are you doing anything else tomorrow? If you’re lucky they might let you stay that day. Of course, background checks need to be run and all those technicalities if you’re allowed.” There was a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’ involved with this, because Nell wasn’t entirely sure herself.

Ashley got nervous when her parents were brought up. True, she could call them to get a recommendation but she would really rather not. While Ashley was whipping the table she gestured to her bag. "Most of what is still in there are the names and numbers of people you can contact. Most are babysitting jobs, there is one number of a daycare and the place, and a few clients where I did music lessons. Would that be enough?" If worst came to worst she could call her parents and get something out of them but they would most likely make a big deal out of it since it would involve putting down work for more then a few minutes. "If not my dad may be able to mail a letter or something" She added in remembering that her father would be much more open to helping then her mother.
Ash was glad the kids would enjoy having her come in. after all it was music. Who didn't like a good song? "I can bring my own guitar too, assuming it doesn't get burnt up" The words slipped out in a slightly angry tone although she didn't mean it. The guitar had more then a few surface scratches and chips from playing for little kids in the past but even the thought of having her beautiful baby destroyed made her blood boil. Ash was also a little nervous about this teacher. True she was working with kids so she couldn't be that bad but Ash figured she should ask. It would also take her mind off the image of her guitar burning up at the hand of that horrid Fire student who's name she Still didn't know. "So what is the teach like anyway? Anything I should know not to say or do?" She asked while finishing up whipping the table she had done. She headed over to her bag to finish putting everything back but there was something still bothering her. Who this girl was. She had heard the name Nell Shepherd a lot, especially lately in the fire dorms. Ash now wished she had payed more attention to the gossip. "So..." She began trying to think of what to say. "Do you go to school anywhere in the area?" immediate regret came after the words. What if she asked the same of Ash? She couldn't tell the truth and didn't have enough information about the area to lie. Ash figured she would just say what ever the girl said since she did look like she was of school age.

Nell behaved very professionally, something that she had acquired when working in Corossion. It could be considered impressive for someone who had limited human contact her entire lfe, but she’d always been a friendly and outgoing person. Perhaps that was why she always felt a tug whenever she snuck out of her hosue and saw all the life outside. Professionalism was just something that came to her easily, which she was glad for because it did come in handy. It was almost as if she came package ready for the real world—her father had always told her being bilingual would be of great use. ”Most likely,” she told Ashley. ”Again, can’t be too sure. They like to be careful around here.” Can’t just let anyone walk through the doors to be around the children. Urine tests were needed along with the background check, and everyone was very careful. Of course, it seemed like much to simply come in and sing to the kids, but it was a necessity.
Lifting her eyebrow she said, ”Burnt up?” She laughed. ”Rest assured, I don’t believe any of the children are pyromaniacs.” Then again, she thought of her seven-year-old self, when she burned the origami paper cranes in a wastebasket. That was different, that wasn’t just a part of being a childhood, even though it was a part of her childhood. ”She’s real friendly, just a little rough around the edges. A bit of a temper, too, but since she deals with little rugrats all day…I’m sure you’re nothing in comparison.” Nell sure she was helping in the temper aspect, since she took care of the children when they got rowdy. Her temper was basically non-existent. Ashey’s next question did not faze her. ”I go to the Academy, up in the mountains.” Mortals knew about the Academy, after all, so it wouldn’t be a danger if Nell said that she went to the Academy for “Gifted”. She just obviously couldn’t say what kind of gifts the students have. If the girl asked her, it would be very easy to invent a lie. ”You?”

Ashley completely understood how careful places like this needed to be. She had heard one too many horror stories of children getting assaulted by teachers because background checks weren't done. She had even had a few nightmares about the kids she looked after back home since coming to the academy. People all over town would need to find a new babysitter and her spots at work would need to be filled. Although she had an up to date police check she would be completely cooperative as always if they wanted more she was use to it all by now. It never mattered how nice you were or even how qualified if you couldn't prove the kids would be safe with you.
Ash let out a nervous laugh realizing she had said burnt up. Some of the girls had joked about it and she was sure mysterious man would do it if the instrument ever left the girls dorm. Ash couldn't help but wonder how many kids at the daycare had elemental parents and would be going to the academy when there powers surfaced. Since the school was in the area she didn't doubt the possibility and that didn't make her feel any safer about her guitar despite the girls reassurance. It was also a little unnerving to hear the teacher was rough around the edges. Ash did not get along well with adults and she hoped she would be able to control herself. It was a miracle on it's own that her and Nell were still talking peacefully. Ash however broke the peace with her cruel looking smirk. "The Gifted school up in the mountains?" She asked not even able to keep a serious tone. Ash was dying to find out why this truly sweet girl in front of her was such a hot topic among the fires. She would have asked but wasn't sure if there were cameras with audio around.
"I go to school there too. I'm newer and have some, questions maybe you could help me out with. Since were done here maybe we could head up together. Unless you're not going that way. Ash added the last part in as to not look pushy seeing as if the girl did head back to the academy with her, the questions would seem very pushy. Ash was one to be addicted to any kind of gossip or news so what ever she could find out she would appreciate.

Nell nodded, leaning back in the teachers chair as she counted out index cards. She didn’t explain why she went to a gifted school. After all, Nell didn’t consider herself to be truly ‘gifted’. If asked, she would say that she was good with english and philosophy, what she was majoring in, but she wouldn’t be able to elaborate. Even though she believed it would have been a better explanation if she told Ashey that she was indeed an elemental. Nell didn’t think of herself as very talented, as deserving of anything that she got. She was thankful for everything, as people who came from a background like her were, but because of her beginnings, she didn’t really think she deserved a lot of what she got. She was better though, Nell thought. Sometimes she felt like she was honestly a good person, but then she remembered the things she had done and didn’t feel so good anymore.
It shocked her to hear that the girl was also from the Academy. "Small world." It certainly seemed that way, since it was a pretty big city and elementals weren't too common. Then again, this was the place to find them. ”Sure, I mean…” Nell shrugged, looked askance for a second, thinking along the lines of Ashley. ”I wasn’t actually planning to head back to school since I have an apartment, but I could if you want help.” It wouldn’t be putting her out in any way, after all. Sure, it’d be nice to bathe, but she could do so in the dorms. She wondered what element Ashley was in, but knew it wasn’t the best place to tak. ”I guess we’re finished here, so you wanna head up? I can drive you since I’m guessing you don’t have a liscense.” She was fifteen, after all, and the Academy was a ways off. It was in the mountains, not a very easy place to get to.

Ash didn't really want to put Nell out but her need for knowledge over threw any empathy that she may have been feeling. Ash normally wasn't the type to care unless it benefited her like working at the daycare. She did seem to be getting along with Nell but it was clear she wasn't a fire. Ash did worry about being seen with someone who may be an enemy but since they were coming from work outside the town. She could always say that it couldn't be helped.
"A ride would be awesome! It would suck to have to take the bus back up there. It really is a pain." Ash had to think carefully about what she was going to say. She knew nothing about this girl and didn't want to get kicked out of the car half way there. She would have to be careful with what she asked and ask questions that wouldn't be uncomfortable to answer. Once both girls were outside and alone Ash started her small interrogation. "So, out of curiosity what element are you? And before I get in the car if we aren't suppose to get along can I still have a drive?" Ash tried to say this in a light manner but it was an actual question she was worried about. "I wont be able to drive myself down here for at least another two years" She threw in trying to keep the innocent conversation alive. She didn't want this to go bitter.

Nell grinned. ”Ah, the joys of public transportation.” It had certainly helped her in getting to Canada. Of course, a lot of it was hitchhiking and learning to drive herself from people who trusted her enough that they let her take the wheel. It was surprising, the kindness of strangers. There wass the risk that she’d be killed or raped every time she got into a vehicle, but she took that chance. Maybe if I told them I was a fugitive, they wouldn’t have touched me. Then again, they’d probably have called the authorities. Either way, she made it as is. ”It isn’t too say. But I have a thing for cars, so I’m rather biased. You like cars?” It was almost ironic that the Earth student liked cars, but she really did. She didn’t know what about them, but she enjoyed working on them and driving and all that.
Nell shrugged on her coat and wrapped her scarf around her neck, before grabbing her messenger bag and locking up the classroom. Ms. Kustack had given her a key because she often stayed behind. Keeping her keychain out, she walked with Ashley out to the car. ”I’m Earth,” she said, and would have done something to prove as much if they weren’t in the Hollow. However, they were, and so Nell merely left it at that. She did laugh at Ash’s words. ”Don’t worry, I’m not that mean. I wouldn’t deny an enemy a ride.” That was the type of person she was—if someone she did not like needed help, she’d give it. And she liked Ashley. Which would make it worse in the end if she turned out to be an enemy. So she left the unspoken question hanging in the air, anticipation creating an air around them.
She climbed into the PT Cruiser and said, ”I can’t wait to get a new car, let me tell you. I love Gwen and all, but I have my heart set on a Pontiac GTO.” PT Cruisers were common cars, a lot of people she knew drove them, but she really wanted a Pontiac. It was a sort of mission for her now. She drove Ashley up to the Academy, keeping small conversation, and after drivign through the gates she got out in the parking lot. ”So you said you’re pretty new? Would you like help with anything? I’m a graduate, but I’ve only been here for a little over a year, myself.” Nell hadn’t come to the Academy when she was a freshmen like most should, and that was all thanks to her mother and her childhood and things she’d rather not focus on.
