When people spoke of deafening silence, this was certainly what they meant. Alright, so perhaps the common room not being packed was at fault. The Earth elementals' common room was often fairly deserted, or at best, just quiet; as most of its occupants preferred the outdoors. Rory preferred the outdoors as well. Which was why she was currently regretting her decision to follow Tony and the rest of the crew back into the common room. 'Tony and the Crew' was probably a good description for her group of friends.
Tony, the unofficial leader (he was the type who'd elect himself), was a rather tall and skinny guy, with long scraggly hair. His life goal seemed to be to become the poster child for wealthy, rebellious teenager. Born into a rich family and growing up in a New Hampshire manor, an only child, his parents tried to make him just perfect. At some point he must have decided that perfect was not what he wanted to be, and got himself into all sorts of trouble at this very boarding school. Rory had a distinct suspicion that he looked forward to returning home during the Christmas holidays, merely to watch his blue-blooded aristocratic mother flinch at the sight of his new piercings.
Then there was Robin. He was nothing exceptional, just a bit of a sports fanatic. He was squeamish (definitely not doctor material) and had the ability to let off a high-pitched squeal whenever something startled him... which happened surprisingly often. Christopher was a self-proclaimed genius who liked to spend his time working. For what exactly, she wasn't sure. All she knew was that his parents were very demanding and strict and expected him to become a doctor. Lastly there was Armando. Seemed to be fantastic at everything he tried, and kind of sailed through life. He was also pretty popular with the girls, to everyones annoyance because then he liked to recount his various dates for hours on end.
"Bored. Bored. Bored. Oi! I'm bored." She heard Robin give a sigh, before turning to face her with a long-suffering look. "We heard, Rory. We heard the first six times." She clucked her tongue at him and disentangled herself from her curled position on the sofa. Tony gave a start and shifted a little to accommodate her. "A'ight... so maybe you have. Has anythin' happened since?" She narrowed her eyes a little. "Nay. Hence I repeat; I'm bored." She heard a stifled giggle coming from behind a book. The volume was so large and thick that it completely obscured Christopher's face from view. Not that it was too much of a challenge, for Chris was a tiny, scrawny boy. Still the book shook in his hands and seconds later his light voice piped up, still thick with mirth: "remind me again why exactly we hang out with you?"
Rory opened her mouth to respond to that, "becau-"
, when Tony's voice cut through her. "It's because we're all masochists, clearly." Armando, raised his eyebrows, almost comically, at that and snorted, "speak for yourself, Tony. We all know what you're-" and then his words were promptly silenced by the pillow Tony threw at him. The rest of the group chuckled before returning to their previous state of silence. Or vegetation, as Rory liked to think. Glancing around at her friends, she could tell that they were all preoccupied and would need a lot of persuasion to move from their seats. Christopher buried beneath his book, Armando with his calculus, Robin with his Rubik's cube – the same cube he'd been carrying around all week, but had still failed to crack – and lastly Tony, his gangly form now stretched out onto Rory's lap. He looked like he was trying to come up with lyrics, since his lips were forming words. Again, the group fell had fallen annoyingly silent. She sighed, then sighed again, and when no one (save for Chris, he twitched a little), bothered to say anything, she resigned herself to this painstaking silence. Well. For barely a minute. "Right. If you lot are just going to sit around doing nuthin' all day, I might as well clear off. Chat t' ye later." She waved cheerily and stood up. Rory was well aware that her accent tended to come through more sometimes. Some days she managed to mask her accent completely. This was not one of those days. With a huff she shouldered her bag and sauntered towards the common room exit, still not sure what she should do with the rest of the day. Technically she had work to do. Her homework was steadily piling... but the prospect of sitting down and working, seemed to her to be a day wasted.[/blockquote][/blockquote] strawberry fields forever

NE ME QUITTE PAS It looked suspicious. Maybe not as much as she believed it did, being the perpetrator of the crime, but nothing at all looked innocent about her save her round eyes, and equally round face, her natural smile curving her lips. Nell came in acquisition of animals too often for it to be normal. She never claimed for it to be normal, because she didn't even know what she would consider that to be. Nothing was normal, especially not the world around her, or the people in it. The animals who she happened to cross paths with, who were not expecting to be plucked up by a brunette. She needed a linguist, someone to inform her exactly of this thing called normal, because she had never seen it in her life.
As such, she'd never experienced this thing called boredom. Every day she made extraordinary. It's how she wanted it to be, now that she could exist in the world free from any restraint. Uninhibited. The iguana in her arms? That had an explanation, though it may not have been part of her uninhibited lifestyle. People tossed looks in her direction as she held the lizard, and it felt much too heavy for how it looked. It wasn't too large, and fortunately it behaved itself. This was not good. People could see her, she didn't want that. All of this needed to be achieved underneath the cloak of deceit, underneath the eyes of anyone in the school because they could report her.
It hadn't been her idea. Partly her idea, but it was Haley that came up with iguana. And it seemed so perfect, Nell could not turn such a plan down. She felt giddy with it, electricity riding a current through her veins. It was not easy to entertain her, no, but this brought the mischevious glint to her brown eyes, her usual smile tugged into something more sly. She wouldn't be hurting anyone with this, and that was all that mattered. Of course, she felt the need to ask first.
"Poisonous?" Haley had questioned, arching an eyebrow as if begging the question if she was serious. "Nell, it's an iguana." Even though the girl hadn't meant it, the words made the Earth girl feel uncomfortable enough. She instantly realized this was one of those things she should know, but didn't, and she was a child again, asking too many questions that she would never ask now. Her lips had twitched, trying to hide any awkwardness. "Yeah, I was just kidding." The blond had looked suspicious, only to be expected.
Her goal was the Earth dormitories now, the exchange just a memory. She did not dwell long on the things she did not know. On some fronts--not learning how to swim until she was seventeen, never seeing the ocean before--she chalked them up to being from the city, from the projects. How was she expected to know about these things? One thing she was familiar with, however, was harsh winters coming from New York. It was not close to thawing out now, and so she wore a sweatshirt and jeans. She did not look spectacularly dressed up, but she saved that for when she worked. Nell appreciated the fact that there wasn't too strict a dress code here, because she certainly did not plan on coming in wearing pajamas and Dora the Explorer slippers (because she did, in fact, have them).
She balked when she noticed Rory come out of the dorms. She knew the girl on the basis of acquaintances, but that's not how it was for Nell. Once she met you and placed her stamp of friendship on you, you were hers forever to love and feed. That's just how it worked. "I can explain," she said quickly, not one to lie. Ever. Even when it was a matter like this. She looked over Rory's shoulder, and asked as innocently as she possibly could, "How many people are in there right now?" Nell really should have been thinking about people, but she was mostly focused on the iguana so still in her arms that it could have been mistaken for a statue.

When Rory rounded the corner, that was not what she expected to see. Then again, she did not expect to see anything. Especially nothing so obviously extraordinary. Her eyes widened considerably when she took in the creature in Nell's arms. Letting out a soft gasp that sounded something like an 'oh, wow,' and not paying heed to Nell's hurried "I can explain," she stopped short in front of the older girl.
She was still gazing trans fixedly at the... well... she had no idea what it was; but it was green and scaly and Rory wanted to touch it. She cocked her head a bit to one side and looked up at Nell. "What the flip is that? It looks like a dragon! He's dead sound! Can I touch him?" Rory was easily entertained and this dragon-like creature was definitely the most exciting thing she had seen all day.
She was so enraptured by the lizard-thing, that she almost missed what Nell asked her next. It did register, after a time. Rory shrugged and looked surreptitiously over her shoulder. "Ach, it's not real full. I mean Tony and the rest of them are in, but they're just faffin' about."
She smiled and looked back down at the animal. Rory had never even been to a zoo before. Not that she didn't know how to tell a mammal from a reptile, or anything. And she did know what a lion and an elephant was, just from immersing herself in books and more books. She'd been obsessed with picture books of animals when she was younger. Some animals even came up in their biology lessons. But an iguana had never been covered, at least, not yet.
Returning to the issue at hand, she looked briefly away from the animal to look back over her shoulder. It seemed that Tony, Robin, Armando and Christopher and she'd been the only ones in there at the time. "I could distract them, if you like," she said with another shrug, "although, they're all so caught up in a cloud of their own ego, I don't think they'd notice if you walked past with an extremely reluctant donkey."

NE ME QUITTE PAS Nell had not expected Rory to not know what the creature in her arms was, so it came as a surprise when she let out a shocked gasp and questioned the thing. Maybe it's because she's Irish. Did they have iguanas in Ireland? She didn't know, because she had never been there, hadn't even heard much about it. Plus, her roots of ancestory were firmly in Spain and Italy. ”It's an iguana,” she said in a hushed tone, though there was no need for her to be quiet since no one else was around at that point. ”His name is Harold. He belongs to one of the science professors, and I'm...borrowing him.” She did get permission to, not fond of stealing people's animals. It would upset her if someone came to her house and stole any of her pets, though some of them would be difficult to...animal nap.
Apparently, there were people about, and she pursed her lips. Well that wouldn't be good. She hadn't really planned ahead, she didn't strategize like that. It was a downside of living in the moment, circumstances turning out like this. But she was skilled in taking things as they came, in improvising. She was clever enough to handle the unexpected forks in the road, she proved it with how she handled her family's plans for her trial. Though, in retrospect, she did not handle that as well as she could have. ”I guess I'll need to wait it out,” she said, still being incredibly vague about the situation. She did not want anyone else around when this went down, but she would be willing to tell Rory since she was already here. But she would be the only on. Anymore and it could jeopordize the entire plan.
Then Rory suggested she disctract them, and the brunette nodded happily. She did not usually like people to help her, but she knew when it was needed. Her pride would not allow her other things. It was just how she thought. ”That would be awesome,” she said enthusiastically. ”You could juggle or something. I don't know, I just need them to be preoccupied long enough to put this guy in the girls' dorms.” The boys would not have as good as a reaction, but with the girls she could guarentee at least a few of them would be freaking out of their minds. ”I would be forever indebted to you.” Her eyes were sparkling with the prospect, encouraged now by the help she would be receiving for this.
