Projects were usually the bane of a high schoolers existence, especially when they were cutting it so close to the end of term and the start of the holidays. He looked forward to sunny July with its warmth and its freedom, and he'd even heard that there would be a carnival held in the expansive park in the Hollow. Even though Ash didn't live in the Hollow, he was sure he could convince his parents to let him rent a hotel for a couple of nights in order to experience the fun that the locals were having. Or maybe he could bunk with a friend--he'd see about all of that when the time came. For now, he was still stuck doing school work and trying to wrap his mind around the project. At first it had sounded easy; create a flower hybrid between two different colours and species of plant, name it, and then hand it in. It was a sort of exercise to simultaneously get used to creating your element and controlling the creation, he supposed. I bet Water elementals don't have it this difficult, he sighed to himself.
Though he'd rather be doing something a little more fun, Ashton refused to let the need for work put a damper on his usual spirit. The Earth leader even smiled as he went out onto the grounds, carrying a large clay pot under one arm. Why work in the stuffiness and cramped spaces of the indoors when he could get some sunshine into his schedule with this? Plus, it would be a lot easier to create his element if the environment was right. There wasn't even any question in his mind of where he would go to find that perfect environment--the gardens were a give-in. The fragrant smell of so many flowers in one place might be enough to give someone a headache or worse if they had allergies, but to Ashton it was nothing. He was already used to the perfume of the Earth dormitories and he felt very relaxed as he walked amongst the many rows of tall plants and flower gardens. The large area of the grounds was somewhat like a maze in places where the trellises were overgrown with greenery to create little 'halls' separating things. He went down one of these supposed halls until it opened out into a little area with a pond and a bench, the perfect place for his experiment.
Setting the pot down beside him, Ashton opened his book on theory and frowned a little. There were a number of options for the hybrid, some more ridiculous and confusing than others, so he decided that he would choose something mid-range. It would prove that he didn't slack out and take the easy route without being too difficult for him to accomplish. "Let's see..." He skimmed his finger down the list until it stopped on the rose/lily hybrid. He couldn't really fathom how the hell he was going to manage to grow that, but then mentally slapped himself. You're an Earth elemental. Look at this garden! Does anything look natural to you? The answer was pretty definitive. There was a massive rosebush nearby with flowers nearly as big as his head, and the colours of some of the species were definitely not to nature. The Rainbow Garden was the most impressive section of the place with it's literally rainbow-coloured plants, but he didn't feel like uprooting his studies and going all the way over there. "Don't be so difficult," he scolded the plant aloud when it turned into a rather demented looking rose. "Oh, why can't you just listen outright?"

You should be working right now, the reasonable voice in Nell’s head scolded her as she strolled thhrough the gardens, popsicle in her mouth. Nah, it’s okay, she reassured herself, wondering if it was an odd thing to be having conversations in your head. Schizophrenia? Oh god, she hoped not, that would just be bringing her one step closer to the pit of psychopaths she called her family. But they weren’t her family anymore, and they never were.
Oh, why were these thoughts even occupying her mind right now? It was such a nice day, and she was in a terrific mood. And she had a popsicle! Grape flavored, they were the best kind. Unfortunately, they turned her mouth purple. At least its better than the blue ones. Then she would be mocked for ‘blowing a smurf’, and she didn’t even understand what that meant. Well, she was pretty sure it wasn’t something polite by the snickers that followed a comment like that. In any case, there was no more eating of blue foods when around her immature friends.
So when shirking assignments she should be working on in the library, she found a great place to be were the gardens. The first thing she usually did was make the flowers crowns she’d been creating since she was little, never figuring out why she loved them so much. Probably because they were like natural clothes for her head. It wasn’t like she could pull an Adam and Eve with a leaf, so the fact she could create something to wear out of nature was pretty darn cool to her.
Just as she was finishing up the crown, walking through the labryinth of vegetation without any true aim, she looked up and saw Ashton as she placed a crown on her head. She heard his voice, and grinned when she saw the rosebush he was in front of. Almost certain that he hadn’t seen her coming, she dodged to the side, trying to be as quiet as possible. Nell crouched low behind the rosebush, and taking the popsicle out she lowered her voice to respond to the fellow Earth student’s exasperated question. ”Because I command you, Ashton Raleigh. Bow to me.” It wasn’t very convincing at all, of course, but Nell was just being silly.
Giving it a second or two, Nell popped out from behind the plant, whistling nonchalantly as if she hadn’t just walked out from the most obvious place to be. Stopping in her tune, she asked Ashton with a befuddled look, ”Did you just hear that? Man, how weird…” Shaking her head, she bit off a large chuck of her popsicle and screwed her eyes shut against the brain freeze. Recovering, she looked at her friend with a smile, and came to stand before him as he sat on the bench. ”How is it that whenever I come across you, you’re always working on something?” She said this as if she were totally confused by how he could be working on a project when the weather was so nice and there was much more entertaining things to do. Great, now she was goading others into her procrastination. ”You need to take a break, eat a popsicle or two.”

So focused on his work was he that the Earth elemental didn't even hear the sneaky approach of another. That was what Nell was aiming for, after all, and her stealth was most definitely working its magic. Ashton glowered intensely at the dirt as if willing it to cooperate with him, not even recognising that someone else was nearby as they crept behind the very plant that he was sitting close to. "Why do you always--ack!" She may not have convinced him that she was the talking plant, but Nell had certainly managed to startle the poor and unsuspecting Earth leader. He tensed up for a moment in alarm and then relaxed, placing a hand over his heart and laughing softly. "Feels more like you're trying to command my heart to give out. Jesus!" But his voice was good-natured and light, not angry with whomever had interrupted his frustration. He thought he recognised the voice, and seeing as Nell popped out from behind the plant and came to face him, he figured out that he was right.
He smiled good-naturedly when Nell played innocent. "Oh, I don't know," he said, furrowing his brow. "Maybe it was the wind." His green eyes were bright with amusement. "Hi Nell." He hadn't gotten the chance to speak to her in a few weeks thanks to the fact that every teacher was dumping them with loads of assignments to close up the first half of the year. Nevertheless, it was good to hang out with his friend again no matter what the circumstances. He would have preferred to be able to hang out when he wasn't busy doing work, but life had funny ways of working out. At least they were in the gardens and could talk whilst he attempted to make the stupid plant grow for him.
"I must just suck at academics," he winked when she commented on the fact that he was always working when she came across him. "I have to keep my grades up for my position," he said a little more seriously. "They were lax when I was only standing in, but there are apparently rules to being a leader that I'm just finding out now." He gave a sheepish grin and tousled his brown hair. He liked being the Earth leader but the responsibilities he now had that he was not expected to keep up with before the position was solidified were a little alarming. He felt as he had at the beginning of the year--confused and a little stressed out about the sudden changes, but willing to adapt in order to keep his position.
Ashton stuck out his tongue when Nell said that he should take a break. "Oh, if only conjuring popsicles were as easy as flowers," the Earth boy joked. This was no magical school of witchcraft like in the Harry Potter series, after all. "I need to get this plant to cooperate, that's what I need." He frowned intently at the empty pot, filled only with the dirt he'd brought with him. There were two seeds as well, hidden beneath the dark soil. He had to influence the two to combine and then to grow into something that his professor would be proud of. Unfortunately, the plant didn't have the same goal. It popped up from the ground again, and this time it was a lily with some spastic colouring, as if it had tried to be a certain colour and then decided against it... more than once. He sighed and the plant shrank back into the soil as if recoiling. "If it isn't clear, I'm not having any luck."
Shrugging, he patted the bench beside him. "Why don't you join me?" He was still intent on trying to get his work done, but he could do all of that while conversing with a friend, couldn't he? It wasn't like he was going to tell Nell to bugger off so that he could concentrate, after all. "So how have you been?" he asked in chipper tones. Curiously, he said, "There are rumours going around about, uh, you and that Josh kid from the Fire element. Have you heard?" People could be nasty with their rumour spreading and Ashton wasn't trying to tease her (not yet, anyway) he just wondered whether or not she was aware of them.

Nell felt kinda bad about the fact that she chuckled when Ashton jumped. But the fact that she meant well by it made her feel better, since he obviously recovered quickly enough and was joking about it being the wind. ”What are those Wind students doing around here?” she said, holding up the ruse. ”Really, some people.” She gave him a sly grin as she innocently said, ”Heya, Ash.” She didn’t really want to disturb him or anything if he was doing anything important, it was just nice to actually see and speak to him. If he shooed her away, she’d definitely leave him to his business, but she hoped he wouldn’t mind her company for a little bit.
She pursed her lips before telling him lightly, ”Don’t say that! I’m sure you’ve got a lot of smarticles.” Of course she was joking in general, just like he was, so she smiled right after when he went into what actually kept him so busy. ”Sounds like a lot of pressure,” she said, almost apologetically. ”But you seem to be in good shape. Not losing weight or anything, right?” She asked this only half-jokingly, smile transfixed to her face, but she did worry about him. She worried about all her friends, all the time, but now that Ashton was a full-fledged leader it meant more responsibility, apparently. And she didn’t want that to negatively affect him, especially when it came to his physical health, which was a top concern on Nell’s list. ”Anywho, congratulations on the step up.” She didn’t know whether or not she’d congratulated Ashton on this ‘promotion’ before, so she decided now would be a pretty good time.
”I would be a very happy girl,” Nell said about conjuring popsicles. She didn’t know whether she ever told Ashton about her garbage disposal worthy appetite, but it was something hard to miss with her since half the time she was eating something. Like now with her popsicle. Going back to work on the treat, she looked at the pot Ashton had, having a flashback to when they’d first met. Still having trouble with these plants, huh. She could definitey relate, since it was an Earth student lesson she’d had a tough time with herself. Especially since she wasn’t very trained before coming this year, even things that she should have been decent with had to be slowly honed. I’m getting better, at least. She watched as the multicolored flower popped out, and giggled at it, feeling kind of bad since it was at Ashton’s expense. As it shrivelled away, Nell assured, ”You’ll get the hang of it. Wouldn’t be an Earth elemental if you didn’t.” Since it was bred into them, she believed that a lot of things could be eventually learned. Or maybe she was wrong about that like she was wrong about a lot of other things.
He didn’t seem to bothered though, and she took a seat next to him. ”I’ve been pretty good,” she said to his question. The war seemed far into the past by now, and she was glad that things returned to some sort of normalcy. Save for papa coming back. That little detail did not need to be made known, however. Then he started talking about rumors, and she looked at him, eyes furrowed. ”What kind of rumors?” She then remembered Nora asking her when she was going to ask Josh out, and a blush made itself known on her face. Instead of confirming or denying anything, she raised an eyebrow and said to Ashton, ”Speaking of rumors… What about you and that Asha chick? I’ve heard some…things.” Of course, she steered clear of the infamous Fire girl, but the things that came through the rumor mill were quite interesting. She just wanted to hear from Ashton first hand, and it also gave her some leverage to tease him with.

Ashton's eyes were light and bright as Nell continued the joke, enjoying the company of his friend already. Hanging out with people whom he got along always cheered Ash up. Not that it was very hard to do so, seeing as Ashton was an eternal optimist and saw everything with a bright side. It was quite hard to get him down but lifting his spirits was as easy as smiling and greeting him just as Nell was now. "Blasted Wind elementals, huh?" He gave her a knowing smile. "Always out to ruin a good ol' Earth students day." But his day was not ruined, far from it. He noted the nickname but had no qualms with it--he was used to being called Ash, or Ashes, or even Ashy from his girlfriend. Were they dating? They'd certainly made out plenty of times but he wasn't sure if they'd done anything worthy of being called an 'official' couple quite yet. Like, uh, actually confirming this out loud.
"Smarticles?" Ashton echoed, chuckling. "My grades are okay," he shrugged. "They've never been anything substantial but they're at least enough to get by. The Academy have different standards." In order to encourage the apparent 'leadership role models', the Academy made sure that you had a good attendance record, good grades, and minimal detentions. He hardly ever landed himself in detention and unless he was sick he showed up to school every day. In fact, he was usually at school whether he was sick or not, seeing as he was a boarding student. He checked into the Medical Wing to have himself excused from classes if he was ill. But his grades were going to need some work. He could pull ahead, he just had to commit himself to it. "Thanks," he smiled when his friend congratulated him. "No, I'm alright. Stress is nothing I can't handle."
Ashton grinned a little when Nell blushed, seemingly having hit on some sort of gold mine here. He had figured that people were just trolling around and telling stories, but if it was enough to make his friend blush there might be something more to these stories than he'd assumed. "Well," he said, "it all depends on who you talk to. I was pretty sure the guy that swore you two got put in detention for making out in class was bluffing, especially since you're not even in the same grade. Then there were the, uh, less innocent ones." His green eyes twinkled with amusement at the thought. Besides, Nell didn't seem like the type of girl to go around doing stupid things like that. "But there are mild ones, too. A lot of people just seem to think there's... y'know, something between you two." Not wanting to make this awkward in case it wasn't true, Ashton gave a bright smile. "It's probably just because of the war thing. But, um... is there?" He ducked his head as if embarrassed to ask.
Now it was his turn to go bright red as Nell brought Asha into the picture. "Not to sound like a parrot, but... things? What kind of things?" He remembered the highly sexual and downright creepy rumours that had circulated about Nell and her friend, so he didn't even want to know what they were saying about he and Asha. At the same time, Ashton was morbidly curious. He and Asha had been a little careless about hiding their friendship, but he was trying to keep their relationship on the down-low. Maybe if we hang around outside of school, people will forget. He really liked her and wouldn't mind being 'the boyfriend', but he also loved the Earth elementals and the way they had chosen him as leader. "We're, um... well, I'm not entirely sure." He smiled awkwardly and ducked his head again. "I like her and she's, ah, she's not really made a secret that the feelings are reciprocated, but... we're trying to quiet it down for reputation's sake." Seeming a little sheepish, he said, "Would you mind not letting this get out?" He didn't see Nell as the type to go spreading such things, but he had to be sure.

Nell tapped her head as if to point to her brain and said, ”Yep, smarticles.” She nodded when he talk about him being an average student, which was good by any means. As long as you weren’t completely flunking out, she guessed that was all right. After all, she wasn’t a straight-A student, but she considered herself pretty good. Her elemental prowess was growing—it was certainly much better than when she started out—and her academics were great when it came to english and history. Math just completely devastated her in terms of grades, and science was at least somewhat better. Oh, the Fuentes’s would be so proud. ”You’re welcome,” she replied with a bright smile. She really was proud of Ashton and all. Who wouldn’t be proud of their friend’s accomplishments? ”Well that’s good,” Nell said, a bit envious about how good he apparently was in dealing with stress when during the war she’d completely crumbled underneath it. That’s because papa’s an asshole and you’re a murderer. She hoped that justified it enough.
She noticed the change in Ashton’s expression with her blush. Thanks, face, thanks for betraying me. Part of her wanted to hear about this rumors so she could know what was going on, but the other part wanted to turn and walk away so she could do something about the heat in her face. But Ashton’s words only made it worse. ”How do you get less innocent than that?” she squeaked. Making out in school? Could you get any worse in school? Josh and her didn’t even make out once, how do people get it in their heads? Her inexperience with school life had her totally unprepared for how people could get. Nell had to resist hiding her face with her hands so Ashton wouldn’t have to see how bad it was getting. Being aware of the blush only made it worse, after all. ”Something between us…?” Stop blushing, dammit. Was it at all obvious between the two? It couldn’t be. They just acting like friends. Or what she supposed friends acted like. Wait. Did that mean she was doing something wrong? ”Ah, well..he’s my boyfriend?” She said that as a question, because she still wasn’t used to the term. And then her face turned even redder when she flailed her hands around as if trying to wave away any of Ashton’s thoughts that may be about…wrong things. ”But we’re not doing anything like that! No, no, no. So yeah. Rumors are bad. And wrong”
Oh thank god they could move on from that. And on to Ashton and Asha. As her face cooled off, she smirked a bit when she said, ”Well, some people told me they saw you hanging around each other. And they’re kind of wondering why since…well, Asha isn’t the nicest girl.” Especially to the Earth element. Even though she didn’t judge people, she knew it to be at least somewhat true even though she’d never had real problems with the Fire girl. ”People say the darndest things, yanno,”
she said, her face heating up again thinking about the rumors Ashton had apparently her about she and Josh. But since those were clearly very, very unture, she had a feeling that maybe what was going around about her friend and Asha were just as false. So she listened to his hesitant answer, smiling at his sheepishness even though she knew she shouldn’t be. ”Keeping it on the downlow huh?” she said about he and Asha’s relationship. That seemed to be a good thing to do. ”Of course not!” Nell chirped, reassuring Ashton that her lips are sealed with the universal ‘zipped lips’ movement. Since both of them have had quite the ordeal with the rumor mill, she wouldn’t want to add to that. Especially since Ashton’s the Earth leader. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashton was a bit sheepish as Nell asked him for further information about the rumours. "Well, um, this is Dale we're talking about," he started gently, not wanting his friend to think he was being offensive on purpose. "He doesn't exactly have the best reputation as is." However, if Nell told him that were was nothing between the two of them then Ashton was fully ready and willing to believe that. He trusted his friend and he didn't think that she would lie to him... which is probably why it surprised him when she admitted (questioningly?) to a relationship. "Wait, what?" Ashton laughed softly as he was confused. Had she been asking him to confirm that as a rumour or had she been saying that they were dating. "Was that a question?" Then Nell seemed adamant in her hand-waving of the other rumours he'd spoke of, Ashton's green eyes lightening. "Don't worry, I didn't think you were like that." His words were honest as he spoke. "People at this school are ridiculous."
If the terrible rumours about he and Asha had reached Nell's ears, she certainly wasn't saying anything about them. He wasn't about to deny that they'd hung around one another seeing as there were several witnesses to this at least. He could have admitted that he'd rescued her from the clutches of the lake (twice) but he didn't want to wound Asha's pride. "I know she's not," he accepted with a nod. "But... she's nice to me. That's why you hang around Josh, right? Element doesn't matter as long as you get along with someone." There was something hopeful in the way that he said this, as if Ashton wished for equality and a lack of judgement. But he also wasn't as naive as some would be led to believe. He understood that most of the Earth kids wouldn't understand his relationship with her, so he tried his best to keep them out of it. "I'm... not really sure if we're dating, because nothing's been said, but..." He trailed off as the blush in his cheeks deepened. They definitely weren't just at the mutual attraction phase, for they'd already acted on that. "Thanks for keeping this quiet," he said with a smile. "It means a lot." Then, to lighten the mood, Ash added, "Geez, we must just be popular with Fire, huh?"
Seeing as they were both a little uncertain about their relationships and the rumours surrounding them, Ashton decided to inject something else into the conversation. "So I heard there's going to be a fair in the Hollow this summer, maybe. Do you plan to go?" The things circulating seemed to be just rumours for the most part, but he had already heard some people making plans and reserving hotel rooms for the upcoming month. He wondered if Nell had heard of it yet and if she planned to hang around. Furrowing his brow, he asked, "Wait, do you even live in Maple Hollow?" Wanting to be sure that she knew he wasn't prying, he laughed and said, "I'm from Vancouver, so I've got to ask my parents if I can stay out for a couple weeks after school lets out." He had also considered getting a summer job there so that he could pay for his own fare. Maybe he'd even have money left over so that he could indulge himself for once. Of course, with a 'girlfriend' as rich as Asha he could probably have his expenses paid for him, but he'd never ask for something like that.

Nell’s blush kept getting so intense that she wondered if it was at all possible to pass out from being overheated because Ashton was bringing up her boyfriend’s…history. ”Right, right,” she said, scratching her cheek. Even she wasn’t innocent to those rumors, and she tried not to think too hard about those things, because they made her feel very insecure. It seemed she’d confused her friend by the way she phrased the ‘boyfriend’ thing, and she did manage to chuckle, even though that was sheepish and light in itself. ”No, he definitely is my boyfriend, but…” She forced herself not to start fanning her face and make herself look even worse. ”I don’t know exactly…I’ve never been in a relationship before,” she finished bluntly. There, she said it, it’s out. She was a greenhorn when it came to experience in relationship. She was glad that Ashton at least knew her enough to see that she wasn’t…well, wasn’t like Josh. But it probably made her look even more naïve. At least her blush was fading. ”Thanks for that,” she said. It was nice having the benefit of the doubt from your friend when it came to something you were sure of.
Luckily for Ashton, Nell tried to keep away from those that liked to spurt rumors like a fountain. Well, the Water students were pretty mischevious and they liked to tell tales, but she’d rather not hear things about her friends behind their backs. ”I guess that means you get the side of Asha that others don’t,” Nell said, because obviously no one could be mean all the time. She supposed Josh was the same way. It confused her just a bit that Ashton didn’t the situation he had with Asha right now, because she figured relationships were just directly stated as Josh had put it. If people wantd to go out with each other, she assumed it was just said point blank. Jeez, if I’m having this much trouble understanding, I can only imagine what it must be like for him.And oh, is he blushing? Yep, he definitely was. Weren’t they just two peas in a pod? ”That’s what friends do,” she said with a wink, laughing at his next comment. ”I guess so.”
He moved on to the topic of a fair, which interested her. ”Ooh, a fair? I haven’t heard about that,” she said, her eyes imploring as she wondered about what would be there. Something else she’d never been to before, a fair. ”Now that I know about it, of course I’m going.” They sounded like fun and Nell loved to have fun, therefore fairs were the perfect place for Nell. It seemed she neglected to mention whether or not she lived in the hollow. ”Yeah, I live in an apartment downtown,” she explained to him, gesturing over her shoulder with her thumb as if he could see it in the direction she pointed. ”I’m sure they will. After all, they let you board here year round. Are you going to be staying in a hotel?” She didn’t have worry about parents or anything like that. Except for the fact that her father was hellbent on having her move in with him, which will not be happening any time soon. Taking the last bite of the popsicle, she looked at the stick in her hand and chuckled. ”Hey, wanna hear a joke?”

Nell's face was absolutely scarlet, and Ashton didn't know whether to feel amused or completely horrible for bringing it up. He ended up feeling a little bit of both as his friend scratched her cheek and continued to blush insanely. "I'm sure they're just rumours," Ashton said in a placid tone. He didn't want to make this worse for Nell than it already seemed to be. Ash was, however, quite surprised to find out that Nell had never been in a relationship. "No? But you're so nice! How is that possible?" He was earnest and completely genuine in his confusion, having assumed that she would have been with at least one guy (or girl... did she swing that way?) before. "Well if you need to know anything, you can ask me," he offered with a chuckle. Though he said it lightly he was also being quite serious. "I've been in a few. None that have ended particularly well, but I know what I'm doing now at least?" He said the last part as a sort of question. He knew the relationship dynamic and he knew how they worked for the most part. It wasn't his fault that he usually went out with the worst sort of girl for him and ended up getting dumped for some insanely handsome jock kid or a guy with a lot more money than he had. The amount of girls that had cheated on him, oh boy. It was almost funny to consider that Ashton was less innocent than Nell, but for the sake of his friend he decided against pointing this out.
He nodded when Nell voiced her opinion on his relationship with Asha. "It's kind of strange, really," the Earth leader admitted. "I... helped her out, and I figured that she'd just go right back to hating me after that. But things didn't work out like I thought." No, instead Asha had rescued him from the clutches of her peers in the dungeons and she'd asked him that rather awkward question about his virginity that he would rather not remember. They tended to make a lot of vulgar jokes around each other, didn't they? Then there had been the lakeside kiss and making out in the guest house of Asha's home, and the hallway... Geez, Ash, you're turning into a player, he told himself with internal amusement. The relationship with Asha had happened fast and he didn't know what to expect. "I used to think that all Fire students had a mean streak that went on for miles," he admitted to Nell. "I've went to the Academy since I was fourteen and I've never met one that was nice to me. Even Josh and Asha were a little, uh, less than friendly at first." Not wanting Nell to question him about what had happened with their respective love interests, he moved on, "But I guess there are decent people in every element. I just wish that I was allowed to tell everyone this without endangering my position." Ashton sighed, then rolled his eyes as the flower failed him yet again. "Really?" he asked it, but gained no response.
Ashton was about to nod in confirmation of the hotel thing, but he hesitated a little and frowned. "Well, maybe," the Earth leader said indecisively. "See, I'm trying to score a summer job there so that I can cover the costs without leeching off my parents." He was almost seventeen now, getting closer and closer to adulthood every day. His parents weren't the type that gave constant reminders of his upcoming maturity but Ashton still figured that it was about time he started to really support himself. He was also considering going to college in the Hollow and that meant having enough money to pay for tuition here. His parents had been hoping that he would attend the cheap college near their home, but Ashton had other plans. "Plus, it would let me experience the fair as well as get paid for it. Everyone likes a little extra cash." He said this with ease, seemingly almost excited with the prospect of scoring a job in the Hollow for the summer. He could only stay for a few weeks, though, because he didn't want his brother to get too upset. "Sure, why not?" he replied when Nell asked him if he wanted to hear a joke. Whether it was funny or punny or made absolutely no sense at all, Ashton loved to hear jokes and to mess around with his friends, so he was all ears.

Ashton, you are not helping. Actually, he was helping a little bit since the thought of why she’d never gone out with anyone before and had been ignorant of the term gave her enough time to recover from the heat. Her lips pulled into a smile when she heard the surprise in her friend’s tone. Well, it was nice to know he thought she could be good with relationships. ”Just…it never happened,” she explained with a shrug of her shoulders, proud that she’d come up with something better than ‘it’s complicated’. She couldn’t use that with everything, after all. Rather than going to anyone who would probably bust her balls about being so naïve and probably take advantage of that, she would very much like Ashton’s help. Even though he was a guy and there were some questions that she felt that maybe she shouldn’t ask him. ”Hey, we should have slumber parties and paint our toenails and talk about our…flames,” she joked, winking as she said the horrible, horrible pun. ”Seriously, though, it’s nice to have a friend who can teach me how to navigate the tumultuous seas of dating.” Even if his relationships had supposedly sunk like ships, in keeping with the sailing allegory. She felt that asking what had happened would be too personal, and so she left it there. All the while she thought of the fact that she’d never expected Ashton of all people to have more experience than her. Am I the only virgin in the world? It was kind of a depressing thought.
She wanted to ask more about Ashton’s relationship with Asha in a friendly good-natured way, but again she kept mentally kicking herself to remind her that not everyone like to openly talk about their personal lives. She didn’t even like that, and she certainly wouldn’t want to talk about her and Josh because she wasn’t so sure about the entire thing herself. Plus, even the mention of it all made her face heat up like a boiler. ”These things just have a weird way of happening, huh,” she commented, giving Ashton a lop-sided grin. She’d tried to help Josh, and he’d threatened to cut her. So yeah, things between them were quite…weird. Like the fact that they were even able to form a friendship after that, let alone a relationship. Nell didn’t think she was going to go telling people that’s how she met Josh, though, considering it didn’t sound like the best decision to date a guy who once pulled a knife on you while drunk. ”I guess I’m lucky I wasn’t aware of too many stereotypes before I came here,” she said about the mean Fire students. She didn’t ask what Josh and Asha had done since he skipped over that little detail, instead thinking about how it might have been a good thing that she didn’t have to endure the Fire students’ hazing as a freshmen. Stereotypes were unavoidable, so she guessed a part of her had wondered if all Water and Thunder elementals were complete assholes thanks to her family, but decided that wasn’t true. Even after the war, she didn’t hold it against them. ”Well, I’m sure the people with sense will realize that not everyone in an enemy alliance should be immediately declared as evil.” Just as their could be good ones found in a bad bunch, there were bad ones there too. Nell couldn’t help but snicker when Ashton’s plant retreated once again under the soil.
Nell was interested to hear what Ashton was planning to do for the fair, as she was always liked to be involved in her friends’ lives. Not to the point where she was jumping down their throats whenever they mentioned in passing that they were doing something or going somewhere, but she liked to invest herself in other people. ”That’s a great idea,” she exclaimed when he talked about getting a job. ”It’s always nice to feel like you can provide for yourself. The satisfaction of getting a paycheck at the end of every week is the best. I’m guessing you don’t have a year round job, then?” She liked paying her bills and supporting for herself like an adult, with the side option of sucking her father’s bank account dry with random expenses. She laughed as he talked about having a little extra cash. ”Tell me about it,” she said with a sly smile. Yeah, she knew about having that extra cash, and oh my god, you’re turning into a leech. Or a parasite or a vampire or some other term to describe something that drains the life of another person. Papa deserves everything he gets, she thought with conviction. Well, moving on from that… She read off of the popsicle stick, ”Where do plants play sports?” After a short pause, she read the other end of the popsicle stic, ”The Ivy League.” Nell couldn’t stop the fit of laughter after reading that, holding a hand over her stomach as it started to hurt. ”That was just so bad,” she said, tearing up a little. Hey, at least a couple of Earth students could enjoy it.

Ashton had no way of knowing why Nell had never been in a relationship before. He had no idea that up until the time which she'd come to the school, she'd been trapped in the house most of the time because of her troll of a mother. He had no idea about any of this, and so he immediately assumed that it was for something else, like being shy or just never meeting the right guy. Reaching out a hand, he rested it on her shoulder with a cheerful, "There's gotta be a first for everything, right?" And that was Ashton for you, forever the optimist in practically everything that he said and did. He didn't see Nell as weak or naive just because she hadn't gone out with a guy or hadn't covered all the bases yet. Hell, Ashton still regretted the fact that he had sometimes. It hadn't been with a girl that he'd stayed with, obviously, and so he tried not to think too much about it. He wasn't about to bring that up around Nell and get all awkward, though. He laughed at her joke about slumber parties, clearly amused by her. He was glad that he had a friend which he could share these sorts of jokes with. "Well, I might pass on the nail-painting," he winked. "But I wouldn't mind hanging out with you some time outside of school." They had already discussed plans to hang out, but it had just never happened. The war had wrecked a whole lot of plans for a whole lot of people, after all. "I am the captain of crash-and-burn relationships," he said with a laugh. "Really, though, not all of them were terrible..." He was covering for himself and his own dignity here. There had been one or two that had just 'not worked out', but the rest? Total disasters, he shuddered internally, pushing the thought away.
He really wouldn't have minded if she had brought up Asha or asked questions about their relationship. Ashton was a rather open person and even though he wasn't really sure about what stage they were at in this awkward post-friendship maybe-dating point, but he was sure about how he felt. He liked Asha and he would like to get to know her a little better as a person, rather than just spending their days playing tonsil hockey in the halls as they tried to avoid being caught by the professors. "Yeah," he agreed sheepishly. "I'm still surprised that she helped me out. I guess I didn't expect it from someone who used to be my enemy." But he was also not too upset by the fact that they had a bad history together. All things could be forgiven with time, unless for some reason they had killed his family or something. That sort of thing was unforgivable, but seeing as it wasn't very likely, he was all good. "They're practically drilled--or, um, burned--into us Earth students when we're freshman," he told Nell. "The upperclassmen really like to antagonise everyone to show off to their friends. Even the Earth seniors do it, though they usually don't cause any real harm. Silly pranks and stuff." He remembered his freshman year, and sometimes he wished that he didn't. He neglected to mention that her 'flame', as she'd said, was one of the people who'd attacked him in freshman year. No need to bring that awkwardness into the conversation. Besides, it had (sort of) been Ashton's fault. He'd tried to be friendly, after all. Apparently Fire elementals didn't like that. "Let's hope so," he agreed. "I really would like for there to be a little less animosity when people find out about... about us." 'Us' being he and Asha, of course. He didn't have the naivete that they could hide forever.
Nell was so enthusiastic and genuine when she seemed to approve of his getting a job that Ashton couldn't help but smile. He loved how she was able to show an honest interest in the lives of her friends, never sounding like it was fake or that she was just flapping her jaw for the sake of a conversation. "Nah, I figured it was best to stay away from a job considering I'd have to quit come summer and winter breaks." He would have liked to get a job, but Ashton knew that living in Vancouver and boarding at school in the Hollow meant that he had a distinct disadvantage on the work front. "You sound like you're speaking from experience," he said lightly, amused by how much she seemed to approve of the idea of independence. "I'm guessing you have a job, too, then? Where do you work?" Unlike some, Ashton didn't see this friendly conversation as prying in any way. Just as Nell showed interest in him, Ash was just returning the favour. He was genuinely invested in this and curious about the reply. He wondered what sort of job a sweet girl like Nell would have. Her joke distracted him from the ideas that circulated through his head, and it was so damned punny that he just burst into a fit of laughter. "Oh god," he breathed after he had somewhat recovered. "That was great."

Nell had to giggle at his reassurances when he patted her on the shoulder. He was such a great friend and made her feel better about the whole relationship deal and her ignorance of it. The Earth male was probably too nice for his own good. She decided that his words were a good way to look at it all so she didn’t feel so uninformed and oblivious. Like maybe it wasn’t so bad that she wasn’t as experienced as Josh. And then she remembered that he didn’t seem too confident about it all, either, but she really didn’t know why. Laughing, she slipped her feet out of her sandals and wriggled her toes. ”Look, they’re rainbow! You can’t tell me that you don’t want rainbow nailpolish.” She looked at him disbelievingly as she slipped her feet back in, but was smiling again as she replied, ”Yeah, I guess we never had the chance to before, huh?” She felt almost regretful about that, since she liked Ashton and it would have been nice to spend more time with him before the war started. Now it was her turn to pat him on the arm as she said, ”I’m sure you’re a good relationship boat…captain. I’ll stop with the analogy now.” Nell laughed, realizing how awkward that sentence had sounded.
Still smiling as Ashton spoke she said, ”Well, maybe it’s her showing her true colors. There’s gotta be good in everyone, I think.” But what about her mother and her family? No, she didn’t think there had been much goodness left in her mother by the end, but she didn’t even know her family well enough to judge. But Josh certainly surprised her by showing the goodness he was capable of by switching sides to protect her and keeping her secret during that war. Just because he was a Fire student didn’t make him completely horrible. He even when against the Fires. So maybe there was good in just about everyone, something to redeem them. She’d really like to believe that. ”The hazing experience is one I’m glad that I did miss,” she said. It was bad that she couldn’t be on the same level of other Earth students her age, but at least she could cling to the fact that she hadn’t been bullied. Well, she was, but not in school. She understood what she went through was worse than upperclassmen picking on the underclassmen, but a part of her was glad she didn’t have to balance what she was dealing with at home with what she could have gone through at school. You shouldn’t be glad about anything in your past. Throwing her arm around Ashton’s shoulder, she gave him a squeeze and said, ”Your Earth homies won’t be so bad! I know I understand. And even though I can’t speak for everyone else, not everyone is completely judgmental.” In a perfect world, but they were both optomists…
Nell nodded her head and said, ”That’s a good point.” He was a grade younger than her so his parents were still probably doing as parents should and providing for him. Nell didn’t know if she envied him that. She liked not being taken care and living on her own. She even had a kitten to care for now, which was even better. She was more of an adult than she’d ever been, and she was still only seventeen-years-old. Scratching the back of her head, she chuckled when Ashton said she sounded like she spoke from experience. And then she realized he didn’t know where she worked. Well then… She was almost shy when she admitted, ”I’m a bartender, actually. It’s something I’m pretty good at and I like all the tricks I’ve been learning.” She was really trying to justify why she had such a…deplorable job. It would have been nicer if she worked in a better bar with better pay, but still, she wondered if Ashton’s opinion of her would change after learning that she mixed drinks and broke up bar fights for a living. ”I’d like better pay, but I mean, who wouldn’t? So I’m looking for a better place.” Then she wouldn’t even need her father’s money as much. Not that she needed his money. Nell kept laughing when Ashton found the joke funny, amused by the fact that he was amused. ”I think I’m going to right in and give them suggestions for jokes. Any ideas?”

Nell pulled her feet out of her sandals and wiggled her toes at him, earning a bit of a chuckle from Ashton. He had no problem with joking around about things like this, so he fluttered a hand over his heart and said, "I'm so jealous I think I might pass out from the envy." He was only kidding, of course, but Ashton was good-natured in almost every way. "They're pretty, though, I can't deny that." He was the type of guy that felt completely comfortable complimenting everyone and anyone that he felt was good at something--guy friends, girl friends, anyone at all. He didn't care that it might have made him seem too nice or like a pushover, he was just too genuine to fake it most of the time. "The war stopped a lot of things short," Ashton said with a nod. Then he smiled and said, "Hey, it's not too late to start. Are you free this weekend?" He was sure that she had school during most of the week and Ashton had school and his leadership duties, so he figured it was safest to hang out on the weekend. "Or any day you're up for it, really." Pulling his cellphone out of his pocket, he handed it to Nell. "Here, give me your number and I'll give you mine. That way we can arrange to hang out some time. No more putting it off, huh?" He wasn't usually the friend that would promise to hang out and never pull through with it, so this was his way of ensuring that they did get to hang around one another eventually, even if it wasn't as early as tomorrow.
Another reason Ashton liked Nell so much about how nice and accepting of everything the Earth girl was. He was genuinely worried about how people would react to his relationship with Asha and yet here was Nell being absolutely wonderful and alright with it. True, one could argue that she had no say in dictating his life and her opinion wouldn't have mattered, but that was not how Ash felt about it. He wanted his friends to be on his side. "True colours," he mused, then nodded. "I like the sound of that." His friend talked about how she had avoided the hazing experience and Ashton nodded, not blaming her at all for being relieved that she'd skipped it. "I'm glad you did, too." Some people would have resented her for not sharing in their negative experiences during the first year or so of school, but Ashton was too genuine and kind-hearted to ever envy someone for a bad experience they didn't share with him. That would have been a cruel thing to think. The boy ducked his head as she threw her arm around his shoulder, smiling. "Thanks, Nell," he said warmly. "I'm sure you're right." Like her, he wanted to believe that the other Earth students would be alright with it if he did get out. But being alright with it and allowing him to continue leading when he had loyalties to another side was a different story. The Fire elemental was neutral at the moment, sided with none and against only Thunder after the war. But whilst the leaders had made this declaration, the students retained their old hostilities. It sucked.
Some people might have judged her for the fact that she made her living in a bar. Ashton, however, was not a judgemental person. His brows shot up slightly in surprise when she admitted that she was a bartender (sounding a bit shy), but he allowed his expression to relax into a smile. "That sounds really neat," he said. "I bet you can do all those neat tricks with the tumblers and the shot glasses, huh?" He was not ignorant to the way of bars even though he'd only ever been to a few and had never drank at one. Ashton was too much of a good kid to get an illegal licence, but even though he wondered for a moment how Nell managed to work there when she was only in the twelfth grade, he didn't really care. It wasn't his place to tell his friends what to do. "Maybe I'll drop by some time and watch you work your magic," he said with a grin. He wouldn't be drinking anything but Ashton figured that it would be fun to watch Nell at work and talk to her on her break or something. "There's an upscale bar in Maple Hollow, isn't there? I heard some college kids talking about it. Black... something?" He laughed, not being enough of a local to know for sure. He wondered whether she was serious about sending in jokes, but whether or not she was pulling his leg he still played along. Smirking, he asked, "Why do melons have fancy weddings?" It was obviously the lead-in to a punny joke, and so he finished, "Because they cantaloupe." Laughing, Ashton shook his head. "Ignore me, I'm just being silly as usual."

Nell giggled as Ashton played up the dramatics. ”Thank you!” she said when he complimented them. ”They’re the result of procrastination. You can always find something random to occupy your time when you’re supposed to be doing something else.” She worked hard a lot, but even she wasn’t immune to procrastination. Sometimes when sitting on her couch, she can easily lose focus. Painting her nails sure did not help her finish the assignment, even though she always got her work done…early in the morning. ”Weekend sounds good, it just depends on the time,” she said, a bit thoughtful. She did have a job, after all, so it wasn’t like she was free all hours of the day, even on the weekends. Her life was packed full with a lot of things, it was sad to think of the limited time she had to spend with her friends like Ashton. ”You know what, I can make itme.” She spoke with conviction, since she really wanted to hang out with her friend, and didn’t want anything (like her father popping by or any of the shit she wished he didn’t do) to get in the way of that. She handed over her phone when he gave his own, and after adding herself to his contacts as ‘Nell Is Awesome’, she said, ”Definitely no more putting it off. I may not have a lot of free time on my hands, but like I said, I can make the time.” She didn’t really know how she’d go about doing that, but she would.
When Ashton lifted his eyebrows, she wanted to duck her head as she blushed. But she guessed she shouldn’t have been surprised when he approved of her shady occupation. Well, it was shady when you considered where she worked and the fact that she did it illegally, but the occupation in itself wasn’t so bad. ”Oh definitely,” she said with a wink. ”Brings in the tips, which helps with the paychecks I get. And I learned it all from movies.” That was true in a way. A lot of the tricks she had used were learned from movies, but after teaching herself those things she started inventing things of her own. She was a creative thinker, after all, and she liked doing her own thing when it came to learning. She was a bit shocked when Ashton said he’d drop by since he seemed like a good kid, but she wouldn’t judge since she had a lot of friends who partied and went barhopping. ”That would be awesome, actually.” Nell would love to have someone to talk to, since things can get a bit hectic and stressful at work. She handled it well enough, and she was glad that she was mature in that sense.
”Probably the Blackjack Bar,” she said with a bit of a nod when Ashton didn’t seem like he was able to come up with the name. ”Yeah, it’s a really nice place. I’ve been there a few times.” She could have added ‘with my father’ because that would be easy for most anyone else to say, but not in the situation. No one except for Josh knew that her father even existed. ”You know what, I think I’m going to look into working there.” They’d be tougher on her when it came to the fact that she didn’t look the age she said she was, but bartending was something she was good at and the bar would be much better pay. Nell couldn’t stop the laughter and she covered her mouth with her hand, using the other to hold her side. After recovering from her little bit of hysterics she said, ”I am going to send that in and give you the credit and you’ll be a…millionaire or something.” She didn’t even know if they gave money for sending in jokes to put on popsicle sticks, but it would be pretty nice.

Ashton's green eyes softened a little as he smiled at Nell, stepping forward to give her a friendly sort of hug. "Don't try too hard," he chuckled. "I can be patient." He would indeed love to hang out with his friend and he'd prefer it to be sooner rather than later, but if she had homework and a job he understood that it might be a while before they could. As he said, Ashton had every plan to be patient. He was excited at the prospect of hanging around with her a little more but that didn't mean she could drop her life to do so. "Besides, summer's coming up soon," the Earth boy said optimistically. "If all else fails, I'm sure you'll have at least one free day then." True, Ashton didn't live in the Hollow, but he did have plans to stay half the summer. Unless Nell planned to go to summer school then she had to have at least one day off on her job, didn't she? It didn't take a lot to please a guy like Ashton and this was certainly enough. "Nevermind the time, though," he said. "What will we do when we hang out? Watch movies, eat ice cream, prank your neighbours?" He said that last bit with a grin that made it almost certain that he was joking. Not that Ashton never pranked anyone. He had some friends that were Water elementals, after all, and even he found it fun to pull someone's leg every once and a while. He made sure that it never got out of hand, though. It was all too easy for a prank to go bad and someone to get hurt.
Her blush made Ashton smile in delight, amused by the colour that was flushing through her cheeks. He was also quite impressed by what she was saying. "All from movies? That's pretty awesome!" Ashton definitely worked better with hands-on tasks than reading things in books--he was terrible with instruction manuals. He always ended up reading them wrong or losing his place and repeating a step about fifty times. All the same, he was pretty sure he couldn't watch a trick on the television screen and figure out how to do it himself. "Do you get decent pay where you work? I would hope so with what you're stuck dealing with." Judge Nell for working in a bar? No, Ashton could never. He was a little concerned about the people that frequented bars though. He knew that the tenders had to deal with the patrons even when they got out of hand and started cussing and throwing punches. Nell could probably stick up for herself seeing as she hadn't been fired yet but it still made him nervous to think of his friend in such a hostile environment. "I'll definitely do it, then." He wasn't kidding about dropping in and keeping her company. A lot of the shiftier bars weren't even concerned about ID if you were planning to drink, but he figured since he was so clean-cut and didn't plan on actually drinking there that he'd be alright. If all else failed he'd just lie and say that he was eighteen, hope they didn't check. It wouldn't be of legal drinking age but he'd be classified as an adult and thus allowed in, right?
He nodded as Nell spoke a name. "That sounds about right." He hadn't really been eavesdropping on the conversation, they'd just said the name rather loudly whilst they were passing and he'd caught on. Maybe they were talking about a different bar but considering Nell worked in a bar she probably knew the names of their competitors. Especially the upscale ones. "I've never been," he laughed. "Only bars I've been in are down in Vancouver." It sometimes sucked to be from a place so far away that you couldn't participate in reminiscing with the locals. But Ash was too cheerful to let that get him down. Instead, he passed his hand over the pot and watched with delight as a hybrid finally sprouted from the soil. It was a bit of an odd gray colour (he assumed the rose wanted to be black and the lily white) but it had the correct petal placement at least. He exhaled a bit and braced himself against the bench, feeling a bit of dizziness and headache coming on. "Ah, damn. Well, at least I've done it. That's enough for now." He'd turn it red later, he didn't want to exhaust himself too much. "You should," Ashton nodded enthusiastically when Nell said that she was going to look into working there. It would be a nice step up. Then she fell into hysterics about his joke and he just grinned as he watched her. "I'm a genius, right?" He was only kidding, however. Ashton wasn't egotistical in the least.
